I’ve been thinking lately about traveling, and I’m itching to go on another trip. In 2009, I was very blessed to go on two European vacations. One was our honeymoon to Belgium and France. The other was to Italy, where we flew into Rome and then traveled out to the country to spend time with my husband’s family. From those trips I learned the value of time away from the more “touristy” areas, and I strongly suggest you go off the beaten path on your next trip (within reason and as long as you’re safe).

Don’t get me wrong, without the trips to the major cities I would have missed some amazing things.

As memorable as those sights were, we have just as many great memories in the country. Before Paris we stayed in Champagne and Burgundy and spent a lot of time driving around, going to vineyards, and hunting for cheesemakers. It was during these drives that we saw some of the most interesting things

In Italy, we spent a lot of time with family, who live on a working farm in the country. As we were eating dinner outside one night, a shepherd walked by with a couple hundred sheep.

Which we then helped to bottle so Uncle Corrado could sell them at the open market (mercato).

And if that doesn’t sell you, take this into account: the farther away you are from tourist areas, the cheaper things are.

2 cappuccinos and a chocolate croissant for 2 Euros. That’s under $3. For all of it. I can’t tell you how many bottles of good, local wine we bought for the equivalent of $5. Everything is so good over there that they practically give it away, if you know where to go 😉

I do love the hustle and bustle of a city and the history and architecture and museums that usually go with that. I love having a variety of food and everything within walking distance. I also love experiencing a foreign country a little like its inhabitants do and leaving those cities behind. I’ve had some of my most memorable times out in the country, and I bet you would too. Try it… you’ll like it 🙂

Our New Year’s Eve was absolutely perfect. How was yours? Did you go out or stay in?

We decided once again to stay in. Really, I love any excuse to whip up a multi-course meal, and with the temperatures warm and the day sunny, we were both filled with energy and definitely felt like celebrating. After a tough workout at the gym, I headed to the grocery store to stock up for the big evening.

The menu was simple because it was just the two of us, but  this could easily be doubled or tripled to serve a small dinner party.

Appetizer: Baked Brie with Cranberry Apple Butter, Brown Sugar, and Walnuts

I have had a jar of Trader Joe’s cranberry apple butter around forever, and I thought it would be a perfectly seasonal pairing with brie. This appetizer was ridiculously simple. I cut the rind off of a triangle of brie, then cut the triangle in half lengthwise. I filled the center with a mix of the cranberry apple butter, brown sugar, and chopped walnuts, then topped the next layer with the same. I popped this in a 350 degree oven until it was melted to my liking.

It turned out ooey and gooey with great spicy flavors from the cranberry apple butter and a hint of sweetness from the brown sugar.

To add some freshness and crunch, we used granny smith apple slices as dippers. We also had some whole grain crackers, and we devoured the entire thing. I know baked brie is fairly common, but I still love it. It never disappoints!

We waited awhile before heading back into the kitchen to prepare the rest of the meal. One of the best parts of eating at home is pacing the meal as you like it.

Side dish: Roasted Vegetables with Balsamic Butter Glaze

Another super simple dish, I started this one by chopping butternut squash, broccoli, sweet potato, and red onion into chunks, then tossing them in olive oil and putting them in a 440 degree oven until soft and browned around the edges.

While these roasted, I simmered a mix of butter and aged Balsamic on the stovetop, creating a buttery, syrupy glaze that I poured over the veggies before serving. I ended up eating a big bowl of these veggies as my main meal and again for lunch the next day. I always make more roasted veggies than I need; they are so easily heated up for another meal. balsamic butter

Vegetables wouldn’t cut it for my husband’s dinner, so I thawed one of the steaks my mom got him for Christmas, a top sirloin, and prepared it in a simple but spectacular way.

I seasoned the raw meat with a bit of black pepper, seared it in a dry pan that was very hot, then put the pan into the oven with the vegetables to finish it up. While the steak cooked, I made a quick and simple mix of blue cheese and salted butter in the food processer. What a combination! I had to keep myself from eating it by itself. . .

Once the steak was cooked well, as the mister likes it, I topped it with the blue cheese butter. It was apparently incredible, with the butter and cheese softening over the meat with each bite.

Of course, it wouldn’t be New Year’s Eve without a little bubbly, Perrier Jouet Grand Brut Champagne.

Nutella Mousse for dessert finished the meal off with a little bit of sweet but not too much bulk. We ended the evening perfectly full and festive.

I would definitely make this meal again, from start to finish. It had the perfect mix of flavors and textures, offered some healthy veggies with some decadent cheese and chocolate, and made my warm kitchen smell amazing.

On the outside, it was a blustery, dark, rainy Sunday evening in December. On the inside of Chestnut Hill’s  The Urban Grape, however, the clinking of glasses, chatting of old and new friends, bottles of Champagne, Port, and oysters cozied up the space and quickly made guests oblivious to the inclement weather.

When I heard about this special free tasting via The Urban Grape blog a few weeks ago, I was excited to actually be in town. They have had a variety of weekend events I have missed due to a busy fall travel schedule, but if there was one event to be at it was for oysters and Champagne. Winter is my absolute favorite time of year to sip chilled Champagne and to eat briny oysters. It’s so luxurious and festive!

After meeting friends for wine, mussels, and cheese at Aquitaine, we headed next door to The Urban Grape event. Even though we were on the early side, a small crowd had already formed around the long wooden tasting tables. After hanging our coats on coat racks in the back of the store (A++ for thinking of this!), we scoped out the Neptune Oyster raw bar and decided to return after tasting some Champagne.

The Champagne and Port portions of the event including tasting the following:

  • NV Gaston Chiquet Blanc de Blancs D’Ay, Grand Cru
  • NV Guy Larmandier Blanc de Blancs, Grand Cru
  • NV Pierre Gimonnet & Fils Blanc de Blancs, 1er Cru
  • NV Marc Hebrart “Cuvee de Reserve,” 1er Cru
  • NV H. Goutorbe Rose, Grand Cru
  • NV Louis Roederer “Carte Blanche” Extra-Dry
  • Warre’s “Otima” 10 Year Tawny Port
  • Warre’s 2000 Late Bottle Vintage Port

Both TJ Douglass, owner of The Urban Grape and Alicia Towns Franken, a Best of Boston Sommelier were pouring through the entire lineup at separate tables, making sure that lines never really formed. TJ was truly in his element, pouring for dozens of people, telling us about the wines, and somehow remembering where each of us was in the tasting.

Rarely do we get to taste through and compare so many Champagnes, and being that bubbly wins over all for me, I loved each of them. My favorite, however, was the citrusy NV Marc Hebrart “Cuvee de Reserve” which was described in the tasting notes as “racy”. Winking smile Maybe it was the weather or the fact that we had a delicious spicy curry for late lunch, but the acidity and bright flavors of this Champagne had me thinking about how it would go well with many of my favorite foods. For $48, it was a pretty good deal as well!

We took a break halfway through the Champagne tasting for some oysters, including my favorites, Island Creeks from Duxbury, topped with mignonette or zesty cocktail sauce.

We finished off the evening tasting two very different Ports. The Warre’s LBV  was what we all expected from a Port, deep red, fruity, and slightly sweet. The Warre’s “Optima 10” Ten Year Old Tawny was light, almost closer to the color of a dark rose wine, not very sweet, and something I could see being a nice summer drink

Before we left we did some shopping for my husband’s team at work and also got a little something for ourselves. Winking smile The Urban Grape has put together some beautiful holiday gifts like this basket below; they really have something for just about anyone’s taste and budget which is why this store continues to impress me.

The whole way home we talked about how much fun the event was: well organized, not too crowded but still with a fun, bustling vibe, a great selection of Champagne and Port, lots of oysters, and a warm and welcoming staff.

Which makes me all the more excited to attend their Christmas party tonight at Ted Baker on Newbury Street! Tis the season for lots of fun!

I have been a bit busy with studying for my wine final exam, visiting family (a new niece will be born today or tomorrow!), and having a bit of fun, but I promise to post the winner of the Kerrygold giveaway by the end of the day tomorrow.
