Cape Cod

Cape Cod embodies much of what I love about New England. From its picturesque villages and towns to its stunning dunes and beaches to the great local food and friendly, laid back vibe it is truly a special place. And my favorite parts of the Cape are two that I get to return to as part of an annual tradition started years ago with old friends. Every summer we make the trek up to North Truro where we stay in a little cottage on Cape Cod Bay. The nearby town of Provincetown provides us with endless opportunities for eating, shopping, and sightseeing. Provincetown, with its open minded and artsy feel is an instant vacation, and truly one of my favorite places on earth.

Lots of prep work happens before the annual weekend, and one of my tasks was to get celebratory cupcakes. After trying Mix Bakery cupcakes at our blogger wine tasting, I knew that there would be no better dessert than these cupcakes. Nothing I have tried in Boston can compare. After work on Friday, Kelly from Mix had strawberry cupcakes with vanilla butter cream perfection waiting for me.

We kicked off the trip on Saturday morning, and while I snacked on a cupcake, my friends had farmer’s market strawberries.

I also tried this Two Moms in the Raw granola bar which had an AWFUL aftertaste. Bleh.

Before we knew it, we were passing beachy cottages and rolling dunes and meeting up with our other friend, Deb, to head to the beach. Unfortunately, the weather had other ideas, and we only had time to eat our Box Lunch sandwiches before the rain came down.

Rain at the beach can be lovely, and we spent the rest of the day food and wine shopping and relaxing.

While watching some USA vs England World Cup action, I sipped on a VitaCoco and a Sea Dog Blueberry ale.

Before we started our lobster feast, we toasted my friend Raija’s Masters graduation and Deb’s pregnancy (she had seltzer!) with bubbly from Gloria Ferrer, one of my favorite Sonoma wineries

Then it was time for food.

There was lobster and corn, lots of butter, and Segura Viudas cava followed by the magical Mix Bakery cupcakes. Cava and lobster make an excellent pair. 🙂

The night ended with us all dressed up and dancing in Provincetown.

It was the perfect way to burn off of all of the calories of deliciousness that we enjoyed all day!

Do you have a favorite summer tradition?

It’s a scorcher out there! Of course I chose yesterday, in all of its 88 degree glory, to do my first outdoor run since the Boston Marathon. I have been focusing on mostly strength workouts and a few spinning classes, but the urge to run struck me and I went with it. It was sooo not pleasant! I didn’t mind the heat at all. In fact it felt really good to have the blood coursing through my veins again and to get a good sweaty workout in. But the air was awful! It felt so smoggy, and there were big, fluffy bits of pollen everywhere. Gotta get those workouts in to get ready for the beach, though, right! Have you started to do anything different to get in shape for summer? I am considering Healthworks’ Beach Body Bootcamp. . .

Now on to the food part of this post 🙂

I love summer salads, corn on the cob, veggie burgers, and fresh fruit, but I also find plenty of time to eat some not-so-healthy summer favorites. This past weekend at the Coastal Wine Trail kickoff (Part 1 & Part 2), it really felt like the start of summer, and we certainly kicked the season off right.

We started at the Box Lunch. The Box Lunch is a summer tradition, and it is always the first place we stop in Provincetown. And I always get the same thing, a whole wheat rollwich with swiss and provolone, tomatoes, sprouts, lettuce, avocado, onion, and hot peppers.  Eaten on a blanket on the beach, Box Lunch might just be one of my favorite summer lunches 🙂

Another thing that I ate plenty of on Sunday were raw oysters. Some people hate them, but I totally crave oysters. Add some spicy cocktail sauce and lemon or a shallot mignonette, and I could easily eat a couple dozen of these!

On our way home from the wine festival, we stopped at Moby Dick’s in Wellfleet, MA.

And a whole belly fried clam plate. I love my fried seafood! If the batter is light, and the seafood is fresh, it is just perfect. Paired with tartar sauce and crispy fries, this meal tastes like summer. I also love fried scallops, oysters, and shrimp, for the record.

Checkered tablecloths and a pretty view made it taste even better. As we started driving off of the Cape, I had an urge for something sweet. Enter another summer favorite and a childhood tradition. Even though I grew up in NJ, we spent time many summers in Centerville, MA, and we always went to Four Seas Ice Cream. Four Seas is an old style ice cream shop, and they serve up homemade ice cream in many scrumptious flavors.

Four Seas has a lot of history as one of America’s most famous families frequent it every summer. We saw members of the Kennedy clan a few times over the years, stopping in for ice cream from their nearby Hyannisport compound.

Being at Four Seas always brings back memories and made me a little emotional this time. I had what I have always had, banana ice cream with hot fudge, almonds, and whipped cream. I love all of the contrast of this dish, the homemade hot fudge, cold ice cream, crunchy almonds. It is the perfect summer dessert. And of course it tastes better when you had sand on your feet and a little bit of a sunburn from being out all day 🙂 It truly is like being a kid again.

Now you tell me, what is your favorite summer treat?

If you have a second, this week I have guest posts on both of these sites, one on Gundlach Bundschu Tempranillo and the other on Travessia Pinot Grigio plus a yummy summer salad:

If you missed the first part of my Coastal Wine Trail Kickoff recap, make sure to check it out here. I last left off with our visit to the Travessia table where we tasted Travessia’s Rosé, Vidal Blanc, and Pinot Grigio.

Rather than going in table order, we made our way around the tent looking for the least crowded tables and visiting those first, so we followed our Travessia tasting with a visit to the Sakonnet Vineyards table. I first tasted Sakonnet wines at a wedding in Rhode Island and loved their Vidal Blanc at first taste.

Sakonnet also hosted last year’s Coastal Wine Trail Kickoff, and their beautiful property in Little Compton, RI, is definitely a lovely day trip from Boston.

At the Running Brook Vineyards table, we tried an interesting and refreshing mix of their 2007 Cabernet Franc and their Vidal Blanc. The result was light and fruity.

Greenvale Vineyards was another winery that we visited last summer and is another beautiful property to visit. While many of the white wines poured at the Coastal Wine Trail Kickoff were a little to sweet for me, Greenvale’s Rosecliff Pinot Gris was drier, softer, and would be a great summer food wine.

There was of course more food. PB Boulangerie of Wellfleet had samples of their baked goods. I can’t even look at this photo of croissants without my stomach growling! Aren’t they beautiful?

PB Boulangerie Croissants

Their bread was a work of art, and yummy too!

After our bread samples we found time for a little more wine. . .

Westport Rivers is famous for their Brut, and you can even find this delightful bubbly on restaurant menus in the Boston area. It has nice pear flavors and lots of little bubbles making it a great local wine for celebrating 🙂 Wesport Rivers also makes a great wine from the Rkatsiteli grape, a grape from Eastern Europe. This wine has a great lemony flavor, and is definitely worth a try.

We also enjoyed the White Merlot from Langworthy Farm, a winery and bed & breakfast in Westerly, RI. The White Merlot was drier than many of the pink wines I have tried. Langworthy also offered my favorite red of the day, their Cabernet Sauvignon

Our final wine of the day was from Coastal Vineyards, a winery that is the newest member of the Coastal Wine Trail. I thought all of their wines were fantastic, but my favorite was the 2008 Seaside White. Coastal Vineyards is new to me, and I can’t wait to pay them a visit this summer!

A trip to the Cape would not be complete without sticking my feet in the ocean, and Mara from Truro Vineyards was kind enough to give us directions to the nearest beach.

I can’t wait to visit more of the New England Coastal Wineries this summer, and I am REALLY looking forward to my annual Provincetown trip with my college roommates!

Don’t forget that my Olivia’s Organics giveaway ends in a couple of days! There will be 5 winners, so you have a pretty good chance to win!
