Being that we’ve loved Ten Tables for years, I was more than a little excited when I found out a grass fed burger place, called Grass Fed, would be opening up in the same block the Jamaica Plain Ten Tables is on. I love JP; my time as a MSPCA volunteer has given me the opportunity to explore the dining scene, Jamaica Pond, the Arboretum, and more.

Earlier this week when we were pondering lunch, Grass Fed popped up in conversation, and we were pleased to find they’re open daily from 11-11.

Grass Fed was not crowded when we arrived around 1:00, and we took a couple of minutes to look around and browse the menu before ordering. The restaurant’s ambiance wasn’t what I expected for some reason. I thought it would be a little more cozy, upscale burger place, but it’s very, very casual, definitely a place I would rather go for lunch than dinner.

They have a great selection of sandwiches and burgers, along with beers and organic wines. Since I had just done a 15 mile run, I was hungry and thirsty and was hoping Grass Fed’s burgers included turkey burgers, despite not seeing them on the menu.

I was wrong. I went up to the counter to ask just in case, and the man at the counter gave me a look and a flat “No.” His answer was the same when I asked if they had seltzer water. Unfortunately, he seemed really disinterested in helping us, so we quickly chose burgers without much more consideration.

Since I was ravenous and neither the chickpea nor the mushroom burger seemed like they would fill me up, I did something I almost never do and went with a beef burger, the Cali:5oz of grassfed beef with avocado, pepper jack cheese, mesclun, shaved red onion & cilantro-lime aioli.

It was good! Despite wanting to leave after dealing with the cranky server, we were glad we stayed when we bit into our burgers. This burger was perfectly cooked and topped with a generous amount of avocado. The onions, cheese, and aioli all made the burger pop with flavor. The fries were hot, crispy, and nicely salted.

My husband had the Blue Devil: 5oz of grass fed beef with Stilton blue cheese, bacon, aioli & crispy fried onions. He demolished it in about two minutes and really enjoyed the tangy blue cheese and crispy bacon and onion strings additions.

We dipped our fries in our fair share of Grass Fed’s house made sauces which were also really a delight.

We were both satisfied with our burgers, but we agreed we probably wouldn’t visit often. For two burgers and fries, we paid almost $30; considering you order at the counter and bus your own tables, that price seemed a little steep for what we got, even taking into account the grass-fed beef. Maybe if they added a turkey burger to the menu. . .

How’s your week going? Have you eaten anything amazing?

Not my Week

Hi friends! Happy Hump Day. I am having one of those weeks. Here’s what has happened so far:

Friday: Frustrating day of work. Went shopping at Trader Joe’s on Boylston Street, paper bag full of groceries ripped across the bottom in the middle of Boston. Hoisted grocery bag from underneath to try to contain, and the bag cut my face. No, really. And no one offered to help, kind of like the time I fell in Boston and people stepped over me. Starting to see a pattern. . . yes that I am clumsy. But also that people here aren’t the nicest.  Later that day, I stepped off of a curb and twisted my ankle.

Saturday: freak boat crash resulting in possibly very damaged boat (the upside, no injuries)

Sunday: stress preparing all day for an interview

Monday: Frustrating work day –  for real, why does no one respond to emails or voicemails?! Have we become THAT busy that a simple yes/no/maybe response is just too taxing?

Tuesday: Realizing work  (and $$) is slowing down for the summer, had the T door slammed just about on my arm before the driver drove away, frustrating day, had a runner spit into the wind. . . and it came back and hit me, frustrating evening trying to plan a client event . . . like the kind of thing that makes you want to bang your head against a wall

Today: Woke up, stepped in cat vom in my bare feet, have some sort of issues with my eyes again, and my allergy hives continue to pop up, and still no response from the person I am trying to plan an event with. For next week. I am starting to dislike the general population.

Today it is taking every ounce of energy left not to just say forget it all and sit on the deck in the sun.

Speaking of sun, it’s a scorcher out there and looks like it will be for the next two days. When it gets hot outside, the last thing you want to do is create an elaborate meal inside.

Blogger inspiration, in the form of Michelle’s tuna burgers, to the rescue!

tuna

I always keep tuna on hand, but we actually rarely eat it. Burgers were a simple, not very labor intensive option. All I needed to heat was one pan!

I started with two cans of tuna, drained, and an egg, breaking up the chunks of tuna to incorporate all of the egg.

I added about a cup of panko break crumbs and a few shakes of this “It’s a dilly” dill and lemon seasoning. It is quite tasty.

My burgers were not nearly as pretty as Michelle’s. They totally fell apart and I had to kind of smoosh them back together.

summer dinner

But that was okay, because they tasted great, had lots of protein, which I tend to fail on in my diet, and took just a few minutes to cook. Served with some pickles, an easy corn salad, which I will post later, and this, my favorite mustard.

mustard

Trader Joe’s Hot & Sweet Mustard – good on anything from sandwiches (turkey, cheese,  spinach, avocado, on whole grain for me!) to pretzel sticks to cut veggies, this mustard packs a tiny bit of spice balanced by a lovely sweetness.

So there you have yourself a pretty easy, almost no-cook summer dinner, inspired by the blog-o-sphere!

I am ready for this week to be over now. . .

What’s happenin’ with you? Are you having a good week?

I love a good dive. There is nothing like a really laid back place where you can kick back, relax, AND eat good food and drink good beer at low prices. I don’t know how I missed it up until now, but I found a new-to-me favorite last week in Charlie’s Kitchen.

Charlie's Kitchen

It was after the Red White Boston tasting crew event, and I was hungry. My husband was working late again and just on his way home after 8, so we decided to rendezvous in Harvard Square for an easy dinner. Charlie’s Kitchen is a Harvard Square institution, with busy neon signs in the window and some great outdoor dining space including sidewalk seating and a beer garden. It was a little chilly out, so I grabbed us two seats at the bar.

Charlie's Kitchen

It didn’t feel like the kind of place that I wanted to whip out my camera and take photos. That would have just been uncool, so you’ll have to imagine the rest. Smile

Charlie’s Kitchen has a fabulous selection of beers from all over, and I had a Saison of some sort. The hubs had a Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout. When it came to food, we browsed Charlie’s very extensive menu, and I actually got a little craving for an all-American beef burger with some of Charlie’s creative toppings, like jalapeno cheddar. However, I very very rarely eat beef and had an interview the next morning, so I decided to hold off. We started with an order of pickles which were out of this world. My husband got a burger of some sort with onion rings, and after a lot of back and forth, I went for a black bean burger Ruben.

Bliss ensued.

The onion rings were crispy and hot, not the slightest bit greasy, the fries were crisp on the outside, soft and piping hot on the inside. The black bean burger was all black beans and spices, really solid, quality ingredients and delicious, topped with Russian dressing, Swiss cheese, and coleslaw, pressed between two slices of buttery bread. It was sandwich perfection. For $8. Our entire meal came to less than $40, and it was far better than some of the more expensive, “fancier” burger meals we have eaten lately.

I have heard great things about Charlie’s beer garden, and since there are so many different menu items and beers I would like to try, I look forward to returning.

Do you have a favorite dive (in a good way!) bar or restaurant? I also love Anchovies in the South End. Yum yum!
