Every now and then, you eat a restaurant meal that changes the way you think about food and that you need to try to recreate at home. Breakfast last Tuesday in Sonoma at Community Café and Catering is one of those meals.

Community Café was a recommendation from our Sonoma host, William, blogger at the beautiful Simple Hedonisms, Russian River Valley advocate, Sonoma ambassador, a great person to go to for recommendations, and overall great person (and owner of an amazing dog!)

We arrived at Community Café expecting the usual café and breakfast offerings which I was totally fine with. What I found was really creative options that were surprising and absolutely gorgeous.

First, the space at Community Café was very California, light, laid back, airy, and relaxed, like a little bit of vacation in the every day. It would also make a great yoga studio, I won’t lie. Café and yoga, perhaps?

I don’t remember much of what was on the menu because one item immediately caught my eye, and I couldn’t order anything else. Farro, cooked in coconut milk with mango puree, macadamia nuts, and toasted coconut.

Oh my goodness, this was the perfect breakfast. The faro was exponentially better than regular oatmeal, and the coconut milk and mango gave it a tropical flair in addition to a super creamy texture. Macadamia nuts, with their buttery crunch, simply sealed the deal, making this a bowl of paradise.

My husband went in the opposite direction, choosing a fried egg and cheese sandwich with sweet potato perfection fries. I only had a few bites as I was completely enamored with my own bowl, but he cleaned the plate.

The folks at Community Café were incredibly hospitable and warm, checking with us several times to see if we needed anything, offering fresh coffee, a free water bar, and lots of smiles. Definitely a place worth visiting again. . . and again and again.

That is why, when we returned home and I got grocery shopping, that it was must that I try to recreate my breakfast. I could not find faro at Trader Joe’s, so I started with regular Irish oats, two cups, and a can of coconut milk. TJ’s only had light, but I would highly recommend the regular, full fat coconut milk.

Very simply start by cooking two cups of oats in a can of coconut milk on low, stirring often, until the oats are soft. You may need to add a few spoons of hot water; it is definitely a recipe to keep an eye on.

In the meantime, I started to puree some frozen mango with a little bit of water. In a perfect world, I would have thawed it, but I ended up with a gorgeous mango sorbet! It was lovely all on its own. I’ll be pureeing frozen mango and coconut milk for sorbet in the future. Smile

Once the oats were cooked, I topped them with the mango puree and macadamia nuts. Faro really would have been better, but this was still a blissful way to start the day and something I will eat many times over.

Another Valentine’s Day post because I happen to love Valentine’s Day AND because it provides a good excuse to drink Champagne, eat chocolate, and linger over indulgent meals.

With Valentine’s Day falling on a Monday, it is the perfect time to celebrate twice, once with a leisurely Sunday brunch for your Valentine and again on Monday.

You know a meal is good when you think about it for years. The day after I ran the Bermuda International Marathon in January 2004, I had one of the most memorable omelets that I have ever had at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess. I loved everything about the hotel, especially its beautiful waterfront location and the fact that it is PINK, but the post-marathon omelet sealed the deal.

This omelet had flecks of salty smoked salmon peeking out behind ribbons of melted brie all whipped into fluffy, airy eggs. It was the memory of this omelet that inspired my breakfast the other morning, and it is a recipe that could easily wow your beloved this Sunday morning for brunch.

I started with a few pieces of smoked salmon, chopping it into tiny bits. To the salmon I added some grated Kerrygold cheese left over from the bread I made the other day.

For my own omelet, I used only two eggs, but the recipe is easily doubled or quadrupled for brunch for several people. You can, of course also just use the whites for a lower fat omelet. I like the nutrition that comes from the yolks, so I left them in Smile

To the eggs, which I had whipped with a ball whisk, I added the salmon and cheese, about 1/8 up of skim milk, and a small pat of butter, chopped up into pieces. I heated up a tiny bit more butter in my smallest frying pan; I find it easiest to make a pretty-looking and fully cooked omelet in a smaller pan. When the butter was melted and the pan very hot, I poured the egg mixture in, cranked the heat up as high as it would go, and waited until the top of the omelet started bubbling, then solidified.

To get the omelet out of the pan, I placed a plate over the top of the pan, then held on to the plate and the handle of the pan while flipping the pan over. A piece of the omelet stuck in the pan, but otherwise, it came out without breaking! And I was able to fold it over to showcase the golden brown side. Fancy, isn’t it?! Smile I was kind of excited about how nice my meal was. I added a few scoops of homemade salsa which consisted of Muir Glen fire roasted tomatoes, a bit of red onion, two jalapenos, three cloves of garlic, and a little bit of olive oil.

The combination was excellent, filling, and healthy. Interested in making this for a special Sunday brunch? If I was making a Valentine’s brunch for my husband (which I won’t be doing because I am going away and he is working alllllll weekend), I would pair this with some oven roasted potatoes, maybe something sweet like mini cinnamon rolls, and of course a glass of bubbly, maybe a Billecart Salmon Brut Rose? Then, I would take my time eating, drinking, and relaxing for the rest of the day!

Happy Solstice! With a busy week ahead, I am still reflecting on my beachy mini vacation last weekend. . .

Part of the Cape trip tradition is a yummy breakfast, and last year my friend Raija started making us her uncle’s famous waffle recipe for breakfast. Luckily she was willing to share the recipe with all of us!  I paired my waffle with a bowl of cherries and a spicy Bloody Mary 😉

Since it was cloudy and a bit chilly last weekend, we opted to hang out at the beach in front of our cottage. It was a lot of fun spending the morning doing nothing but catching up. The scenery was pretty amazing as well.

After lots of relaxing, it was time to head to the Taste of Truro at Truro Vineyards. We last visited the vineyards a few weeks ago, and I was excited to attend another event at this beautiful property and to try more Truro Vineyards wines.

First we had a little photo shoot.

Then it was time to do some wine tasting! I ran into the fabulous Mara who I met at the Coastal Wine Trail kickoff and who also happens to have a really great blog, and she recommended the 2008 Maritime Zinfandel which is brand new and which I was already eyeing up, given my Zinfandel love.

It was really good! It had some great berry flavors and a little bit of spice. It was actually the perfect choice for the day that was in it, and I instantly wanted to pair it with broiled salmon with cherry compote.

I also split a glass of Vignoles with my friend; I had really enjoyed its crisp, fruity flavors at the Coastal Wine Trail Kickoff and liked it just as much a second time.

One thing that was different than our last visit to the vineyard were the vines themselves! Tiny little grapes are everywhere just waiting to spend their summer taking in the sun and growing big and fat to make more wine for us! 😉 It’s just so interesting to watch the weather and to see its affect on the grapes and thus the wine itself. Hopefully it will be a good year.

The Taste of Truro had a variety of delicious food offerings from local restaurants as well which made it perfect to try out new places. These clams with chorizo looked and smelled amazing.

There was also lobster chowder, arancini, whole grains salad, and a variety of other treats. I love “Taste of” events. Luckily this week I am going to Taste of Cambridge!

Taste of Truro, like the rest of my visit to the Cape, was a great way to spend time with friends. We followed our wine adventure with a trip back into Provincetown, some dress shopping, oysters with some killer spicy horseradish at The Lobster Pot, and finally dinner at Front Street, an incredible P-town restaurant that deserves its own post!

I hope you are all having a great Monday so far. I am so excited for the week ahead; there is lots of fun to be had at a variety of blogger events, and I can’t wait to see everyone, eat great food, drink good wine, and to have lots to blog about!  I will also be introducing my “Dinner in 10” and “Wine from Where?” series that I hope to keep going periodically on the blog. Finally, I am excited to say that based on my BBQ & Beer post, the husband decided he does indeed need to have Buster’s BBQ in Calistoga on his birthday. We are going to wine country in July! Woop woop!
