I love food, I love wine, I love to cook, I love events and eating out, and I love to write. You probably already knew that, considering the food and wine blog and all, but while steaming artichokes, chopping lemons, and photographing the whole process last night it hit me. Months ago, my focus was blog traffic, and it made me miserable. I spent so much time trying to figure out what other people wanted to read that I forgot what I wanted to write about.

Slowly, somewhere along the way, I rediscovered the joy in writing. It may have been in Sonoma or Napa or attending various wine tasting events or delicious dinners, or it may have just been in my own kitchen. All I know is that hello, I am happy to be here and ready to do more!

As you know, today begins the Eat from Home Challenge, an effort to save money, waste less packaging, eat healthier, and in general get my kitchen mojo back after the marathon. I appreciate all of the support you offered in this challenge which I actually think will be a little difficult. I love going out. I feel like it gives me something to look forward to during the week, and it is always a great option when you are too tired. Still, recommitting myself to my kitchen is a good thing, and I can’t wait to get creative.

With ingredients like these strawberries and artichokes that we picked up at Trader Joe’s, I think it will also be a delicious challenge.

Sunday was NOT part of the challenge, so we went to the Bin Ends Fine Wine Flea Market, a magical wine tasting event which usually houses 9-10 different tables with 5-7 different wines for tasting and ordering. I have found so many wines that I love this way. (past Bin Ends posts here and here)

I will post more on our wine purchases later, but I did fall in love with a new Italian Cabernet Franc and a delicioso sparkling wine made from the Malvasia grape. I am working on my grape Century Club membership (having tasted wine from at least 100 grapes), and I am about 70 into it and tried 2 new ones today. Not too shabby. Bin Ends is a great environment for this pursuit!

After Bin Ends, all I wanted were oysters. I have actually had an oyster craving since pre-marathon but thought it prudent to avoid raw seafood for a few days prior just in case.

We tried Barbara Lynch’s B & G Oyster in the South End, a mecca for all things oyster, but they were closed for a private event. Luckily, Eastern Standard saved the day.

It was a patio kind of day, and an Anchor Steam from San Francisco hit the spot.

We also had the cheese plate which included a Manchego, a Gorgonzola Picante, and a Brie cheese along with quince paste, candied bacon, and Nicoise olives.

It wasn’t really lunch, and it wasn’t really dinner, so we ordered homemade potato chips and onion dip. SO GOOD.

We also satisfied my Island Creek oyster craving with a dozen oysters complete with cocktail sauce and mignonette. Delicious and briny, they hit the spot! I could live on oysters!

When I got home, I decided to dive into the artichokes that I bought, so I trimmed them, boiled them, and ate every last leaf and heart, some plain and some dipped in a mix of mayonnaise, lemon, and spicy mustard.

Artichokes take forever to eat, but they are so incredibly meaty and delicious!

We ended the night eating homemade pizza, guacamole, roasted veggies, and other treats at our friend Michael and Jill’s house. We popped open one of my birthday wines, a 1980 Beaulieu Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, and once decanted and aerated, it was delicious! We were celebrating 2 engagements, a new job, a birthday, and the marathon, so a special wine was in order! 🙂

And here we are starting a brand new week full of possibilities and challenges! I hope you are all well rested and ready for the week and as excited about something as I am about blogging.

AND I hope you have entered my Cabot cheese giveaway! This giveaway closes on Wednesday, and it is too good to pass up!

The weekend is here! Well almost. . . only a few hours until we wrap up another work week. What are you doing this weekend? Tonight I am heading to a wine tasting at Morton’s which I am very excited about. Tomorrow I am going to Down 2 Earth, Boston’s Sustainable Living Expo, and Sunday I will reunite with my puppy dog friends at the MSPCA. Due to training and travel, I haven’t been to the MSPCA to volunteer in a few weeks, and I totally miss dog walking!

Today’s Friday Foodie Feature is no stranger to Travel Eat Love readers. Kelly from She Wears a Red Sox Cap has guest posted about her New Zealand adventures (here & here) and shares my love of food, fitness, wine, travel, and New England. I read her blog every single day, and I have had fun following her wedding planning. Probably more fun than she has haha 🙂

Take it away Kelly!

How long have you been blogging?
My one year blog anniversary will be April 22nd, so almost a year. I also had a really ridiculous blog back in college that was basically a dialog between me and some of my friends.

What is your favorite thing about blogging? Least Favorite?
I think my #1 favorite thing about blogging is how much it has expanded my horizons. I have tried so many different foods, recipes, restaurants, exercises, etc because I knew it would make “good blogging material,” but really it just makes really good experiences that I am so happy to have had. I’m a bit of a “play it safe” person, so it’s nice to have that extra push to try new things and always challenge myself. It has also expanded my horizons about people. I have made so many great blogging friends and it’s so fun and interesting having friends from all over the world. For a whole list of things I love about blogging, check here:
http://www.shewearsaredsoxcap.com/2009/11/why-i-love-blogging.html

My least favorite thing about it is when I’m a restaurant and someone wants to know (usually friends of friends or something) why I am taking pictures of my food and why I blog etc. I know I should just answer the questions up front, but I always get a little embarrassed about it. It always seems to make more sense to people once they read my blog, but when they haven’t yet I always get that “why would you EVER do that” vibe from them.

What has been your most fun blog post to write?
All of my posts have been fun to write, but probably my favorite was from my recap of my spring triathlon last summer. The triathlon is sort of why I started the blog in the first place and I had talked a lot about training, and a knee injury I suffered (and still suffer, boo) as a result of training, so it was nice to show the hard work had paid off.

Another fun post I did with Eric on cheating in relationships. Glamour Magazine did an article on what they think is cheating, vs. what is not cheating. Eric and I discussed each one and I posted about our opinions. Eric’s responses just made me laugh, so I laughed the whole time I wrote the post 🙂

Where do you see your blog this time next year?
Truthfully, I’m not sure. Most obviously, I’d love for my blog to be better, and to have a lot more readers. But I haven’t 100 percent worked out exactly how I am going to accomplish that and what changes it will mean for my blog. I think that is okay though. If you had asked me where my blog would be today one year ago, I would’ve had no clue either- and I’m so happy with how far it has come.

Is there anything else about your blogging experience you would like to share?
I am so happy that I ventured into the blog world about a year ago. Most days I look forward to coming home from work so I can write my blog post (and eat my ice cream in front of the tv haha). I think the number 1 way that I keep blogging so positive for me is to not take myself too seriously. I know that if I don’t post one day, my readers will survive 🙂 This attitude has helped keep blogging fun and not make it seem like another item on my already too long to-do list.

Happy Saturday! Today is February 20, and officially marks the beginning of the last month of my 20’s! Rather than dreading my 30’s, I am really excited about a new decade and the chance to celebrate the life that I have had so far. I thought it would be fun to share 10 defining moments from my 20’s with you to kick off the last month of this crazy decade 🙂

1) January 2001– I moved to Ireland to study abroad. Those were the days before I had a digital camera, and I don’t have any scanned photos. Moving away from my family for some 7 months, having to find my own apartment, learning a different currency and cultural way of life was a truly defining step in becoming who I am today.

2) March 2001 – Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day and my 21st birthday in Ireland. Not only did I have the friends and roommates I lived with in Ireland, but several friends from America also came over for these occasions making March 2002 pretty much a time of non stop fun and entertaining. I still managed to do well in school too 😉

3) March 2002– I lost my father.

4) May 2002 – I graduated from college into a post 9/11 economy without a clue of what I wanted to do with my life. I proceeded to substitute teach for a few weeks, then spent the summer unemployed. This was the last time I took longer than 2 weeks off of working, and I wish I had savored this time rather than spending it panicked about my future.

5) September 2002– I got my first job in Boston and found my first grown up apartment, living alone for the first time in my life. It was a tiny studio in Allston in a pretty gross, slightly scary building. But I found it by myself, I paid for it by myself, and I was pretty pleased with myself.

6) August 2003– Love at first sight, I saw my husband for the first time. He was temping at Brigham and Women’s, and I was still working there, my first job out of college. We both hated the jobs, but we had them for a reason. We haven’t been apart since.

7) January 2005– We bought our first condo. It has been accompanied by MANY headaches throughout the years, but we have made great friends with awesome neighbors, made a completely new neighborhood our home, and for the most part have been very happy here!

8) August 18, 2006– We got married! Surrounded by family and friends, we had the most perfect summer evening for a New England lobster bake and sail around Boston Harbor.

9) I became an auntie. . . 8 times! We have 6 nieces and 2  nephews, 5 in MA, 1 in NJ, and 2 in Italy. They range in age from 1.5 years old to 9. I never could have imagined having such a big and fun family! I also became a godmother in October 2007 🙂

10) June 2009 I started blogging. Seems like such a small thing, but over the past few months as I have made new friends and contacts, I have started to shape in my head a career path (or paths) that incorporate all of the things that I love in my personal life. It feels amazing to enter a new decade with clearer goals and a better idea of what I want to do “when I grow up”.

These are just a few of the biggest moments of the decade. Through my 20’s as through the other decades of my life, I have enjoyed the love and support of my mom and sister, have made many great new, lifelong friends, traveled on dozens of work and vacation trips around the country and outside the US, run 3 marathons and am training for a 4th, and have been able to work on a variety of causes that mean a lot to me.

Its been a great decade, and I can not wait to see what the next one brings. In the meantime, I get to enjoy a year full of birthday celebrations for my friends!

What are some of the more defining moments of your last decade?
