This is a post you will want to bookmark if you love smoky barbecue flavors in an all-vegetarian meal. It is easily my new favorite vegetarian dinner, and soon you will see why.

drunken beans and cornbread

Beer! Not a light beer, but something flavorful, amber or darker, like this Sam Adams Irish Red.

Half a can of chopped chipotles in as much adobo sauce as you can squeeze out the can. Reserve the rest of the chipotles for later, maybe to make some salsa?

I decided to use up the beans I had in my cupboard, a can of pinto beans and a can of kidney beans, draining and rinsing them before getting started. I am pretty grossed out by the liquid that comes in the can!

mixed beans

Making these beans was simple, but if you allow a little bit of extra time for them to simmer on the lowest heat, you reap the flavor benefits. Into the pot went the beans, the beer, a heaping tablespoon of molasses, and the chopped chipotle in adobo sauce. Mix up all of the ingredients, and simmer until a nice, syrupy sauce has formed.

Serve atop a tasty wedge of corn bread, topped with grated sharp cheddar or another cheese of your choice.

corn bread and beans

Being totally stuffed up and feeling icky with allergies has really killed my appetite, but this dinner brought it back. I topped it with some pickled cabbage slaw that I made earlier in the week for a zesty, crunchy contrast to the hot, smoky beans and soft, somewhat sweet bread. A bowl of heaven, I tell you! Cooking with beer is where it’s at.

Do you cook with beer or wine often? What’s your favorite dish?

A little bit of Scotland right in one of my favorite Boston neighborhoods, Jamaica Plain restaurant, The Haven, is cozy, comfortable, and offers a fantastic mix of Scottish beers with a few local beers thrown in. The Haven wasn’t our first choice on Saturday night; after Daisy’s blog post on Tres Gatos, I was after the tapas. However, Tres Gatos had seven parties of two in front of us and a full house, so we decided to save it for another day.

The Haven was almost as crowded, but after just a few minutes browsing the beer menu, we saw seats opening up at the bar and opted to eat there. I love eating at the bar, and we were starving!

The Haven

Saturday’s raw, gray weather was the perfect contrast to the warmth of The Haven; it made me think of our trips to Ireland and just how good a warm pub feels on a rainy day. We each started off with a beer, me with a Portland, ME favorite, Geary’s Wee Heavy Scottish Ale and the husband with a Belhaven stout. Both beers were excellent, mine dark and malty and the Belhaven even darker with definite flavors of coffee and dark chocolate.

We paired our beers with the complimentary oat cakes and sweet butter, topped with salt, that were given to us. Again, I was transported across the sea, the chewy oatcakes and fresh butter so different than the bread at most restaurants.

I am still craving comfort food, and big time. That might have something to do with the weather being crappy every five days out of seven, or so it seems, but I am ready to not feel this way. However, The Haven specializes in simple comfort food, so I was in the right place for what I wanted. We started by sharing a golden beet and endive salad, our valiant effort toward healthy eating for the night. The salad was perfect, its sweet beets and bitter endive working very well together, and addictive pistachios providing a nutty crunch. What is it about pistachios? They are too good!

In addition to the salad, we also shared the cheese and broccoli rabe on toast. Cheese on toast is one of those simple pub foods that I love to eat in Ireland, and here the broccoli rabe added some healthy veggie goodness and delicious flavor. A gooey open face grilled cheese is about how I would describe this. I want one now!

As we are big time sharers when it comes to food, especially at places new to us, we also shared the un-photographed fish supper, a fish and chips dish with the best mushy peas I have ever had. The mushy peas were smooth and garlicky, more like a green pea hummus than the canned mushy peas I am used to.

With dinner I had another beer, a Notch Session 70 Shilling, made for The Haven. I think I would have liked this beer if I had it before the Wee Heavy, but it seemed too light for me. I’d try it again on a warmer day; perhaps I was just in the mood for darker, heavier flavors that evening.

We were too full for dessert, but I will return for dessert alone if I have to. Some think the idea is vile, but I love a fried Mars bar, and I just have to have one soon.

While I definitely still want to go to Tres Gatos, The Haven was the perfect place to spend a Saturday evening. It felt authentically Scottish without being gimmicky or over the top at all, offered some very friendly service, and some of the most creative pub-style food I have seen in the Boston area.

Marathon Monday is without a doubt the best day of the year to be in Boston. I literally don’t have a voice today from screaming for HOURS, but it was totally worth it. Yesterday could not have been more beautiful, weather wise. We set out early to get a prime spot at the corner of Hereford and Newbury Streets, and except for a quick lunch at Sonsie, we spent the entire day there.

Boston Marathon

Being a marathon spectator is tiring! I did all sorts of jumping up and down and screaming as the inspiring wheelchair racers came flying through.

Boston Marathon

I followed the Boston Marathon stream on Twitter and quickly became the source of news for everyone around us. As Americans Desiree Davila and Ryan Hall took the lead in their respective races, we just got more and more excited. Davila came up Hereford Street strong on the heels of the eventual winner, Kenyan Caroline Kilel. The crowd was electric as these two came through!

Boston Marathon women's finish

Not far after the elite women were the first elite men. You could feel the tension in the air as Geoffrey Mutai and Moses Musop came up Hereford Street. They were there and gone in seconds.

Boston Marathon Men's finish

We waited for Ryan Hall to come running through. He finished an impressive fourth with the fastest marathon time of any American in any conditions.

Ryan Hall

Watching the elite runners was fascinating; they are in serious shape! But my favorite parts of the day were definitely when the regular runners came through. I loved yelling out people’s names or charities and seeing their faces light up with recognition. It was fun to help runners with that final push up and around the corner until they saw the finish line. I know from experience just how difficult that moment can be and how far away the finish line can seem.

Lunch at Sonsie followed our marathon spectating. I love Sonsie for its laid back, European feel and the doors that open on to Newbury Street.

I had my first Sam Adams Summer Ale of the season. . . and then decided I don’t really like it!

Lunch was fantastic. We shared the asparagus and beet salad with flower blossom chevre. The chevre was so rich and creamy that we ended up scraping every last bit from the plate. The asparagus was grilled, a definite nod to summer.

We also shared one of Sonsie’s pizzas, mushroom with caramelized onion, mozzarella and brie. I adore the pizzas at Sonsie, and this was a great combination of flavors.

We finished the day with a 3.5 mile walk home and some sushi. Spectating is exhausting work! I am inspired to start running again, once I figure out a time I can be away from my computer.

Ever since I started working from home, and especially since I have gotten more work, it is easier and easier to sit at my laptop for just another hour. . . and then the day is gone. I think everyone assumes that once you have a flexible work schedule you can just do whatever you want and have plenty of time to exercise. I am actually finding the structure of a full time job made me work out more. My days now are unpredictable and always changing, so it’s been really tough fitting workouts in, and I really want to figure it out. I am also a really bad sleeper which in turn makes me exhausted most days thus repeating the cycle of not working out.

How do you find/make time to work out?
