Happy Travel Tuesday! As you already know, travel is one of my favorite things in life, and I am pretty lucky that I get to do it pretty frequently (I wish more!). Today wraps up my series of posts on our family trip to Sanibel Island.

My sister and her family, along with my mom, stayed at a condo in the Sandalfoot condo complex. It was right on the beach, offered a couple of spacious bedrooms with baths, a kitchen, living room, and screened in balcony that kept the bugs out. It offered plenty of room for the kids to play, and we spent the majority of our time there.

We actually booked our trip separately, and on the recommendation of my brother-in-law, stayed at the Holiday Inn Sanibel Beach Resort.  The price happened to be right, and as long as the room was cool and clean, we would have been happy. We ended up pleasantly surprised with just how nice the property was and how well we were taken care of by the staff.

The hotel is located on a fairly large property that offers bike rentals and lots of space for wandering. It even has two ponds with small alligators, turtles, birds, and other little creatures.

One of the days we were in Sanibel, my family came over to our beach for the day, and the kids loved the ponds.

Throughout the time we were in Sanibel, we enjoyed our hotel’s beachside location which included a tiki bar and pool. I am not a pool fan, but I can definitely get behind a cold rum drink and lunch on the beach!

Our beach was only a few hundred feet from our room which made it easy to come and go as we pleased. Shady palm trees and hammocks provided some space out of the sun.

Holiday Inn Sanibel

Sanibel vacation

Just like the rest of Sanibel, the Holiday Inn was quiet, laid back, low key, and simple, a little bit of paradise in the very hot Florida sunshine. We enjoyed our stay and plan on staying there again on our next family trip to Sanibel Island.

What’s your travel style? Are you laid back or super planned? Are there are must-haves when it comes hotels or other travel arrangements?

Newport, Rhode Island is one of my all time favorite New England towns. Summer perfection, in each and every purple hydrangea, in the sparkling blue sea, and sailboats, Newport is certainly dripping with wealth, but it is also laden with New England charm and is an affordable day trip from Boston.

Over the 4th of July weekend, we were fortunate to be invited to visit friends who were borrowing a house in Newport for the weekend. We set off Saturday morning for our favorite New England winery, Travessia, to try the 100% Massachusetts grown Pinot Noir that was just released. I’ll post about that later, but let me say, it is fantastic. You should visit Travessia and eat at Ginger Grill after for kimchi and dumplings. But, again, that’s another post.

We arrived in Newport in the early afternoon and got a tour of the house, which was a block from the Newport Harbor.

Newport, RI

A massive old carriage house style home, this house has five bedrooms with bathrooms and two kitchens. The stove was amazing, the fridge was a gigantic SubZero, and I wanted to move in. It was a seriously large, beautiful, but comfortable house decorated appropriately for its age.

Saturday was one of those gorgeous New England summer days that should last forever, so we didn’t waste much time inside the house. Instead we headed to one of the Newport area’s beautiful beaches, 3rd Beach, a secluded bay side swath of soft sand and warm water. I hate to say it, but I can’t get over just how much nicer Rhode Island beaches are than Massachusetts beaches. So much warmer! And cleaner, and the sand is so much softer. I will always love the Cape, but for swimming, I might be heading South more often.

Once we had our fill of sand, we headed to Castle Hill for cocktails on the lawn. Talk about beauty, elegance, and feeling like you are in The Great Gatsby or The House of Mirth.

Castle Hill’s expansive lawn transforms you back to another time, with views all around from the outdoor dining area, bar, and Adirondack chairs sprinkled throughout.

Indoor dining areas are equally impressive, sparing no detail, and taking full advantage of Castle Hill’s views. Once we had our cocktails (a Dark & Stormy for me!), our friend used his keen eyes to spot some Adirondack chairs opening up on the lawn, and we went for them.

Lounging on the lawn at Castle Hill was the perfect way to wrap up the afternoon before heading back to the house for a barbecue. I can’t believe I had never been there before, and I can’t wait to go back!

The weekend is almost here again! Do you have any fun day trips planned?

Every single trip that the hubs and I take to Ireland includes at least one drive out to Connemara in the West of country, and I never tire of its beauty, serenity, fresh food, and clean air. Connemara’s landscape is diverse from rolling hills to ominous mountains made of stone, from calm, glass-like bays and lakes to raging waves and rugged coastline. My husband spent his childhood weekends and summers here, and as a result he and his family know every lovely bit of it which makes going off the beaten path and disappearing from the world for the day a very easy task.

Ballyconneely- The little black spot about 1/3 from the left is a seal’s head! We watched him swimming around for quite awhile, and he was SO cute.

We almost always stop at the same lunch spot, O’Dowd’s in Roundstone. We actually went here RIGHT before we got engaged at nearby Mannin Beach. The food is always fresh and delicious and well, the view:

O’Dowd’s is warmed by a small but roaring turf fire and is a very cozy place to rest while on a journey around Connemara.

Roundstone was made famous by the film, The Matchmaker. You may recognize the pier from some of the scenes in that adorable film!

On the car ride back to Galway, I struggled to keep my eyes open with all of that fresh air and good food. I did manage to stay awake to snag another photo of a rainbow.

Can you see why I love Ireland? 🙂
