Let’s take a little trip to Austria, shall we? Our winter trip to Austria was one of my favorite travel experiences ever, but I long to spend days visiting Austria’s wine country during the spring or summer, when things are lovely and green.

The 2013 Loimer Lois Grüner Veltliner is one of the wines I would love to be sipping on an Austrian summer day, but a Boston summer on a boat was not a bad second choice.

Loimer Lois Gruener Veltliner

I have loved Lois Grüner Veltliner for years now; I attended an amazing Austrian wine tasting when I first started becoming passionate about wine, and have been a fan ever since. The 2013, like so many Grüners, is a perfect summer wine, and there are lots of summer weekends left! (Don’t let the advertising world tell you differently. It’s still time for Grüner and not pumpkin beer, sweaters, or any of that nonsense!)

This wine is refreshing and fun, with acidity that dances on the tongue and citrus notes that linger. It’s great with your favorite appetizers and would be delicious with a grilled lemon chicken, salads, or even a fun and fruity dessert.

Summer ends officially the 3rd week of September; I hope you continue to discover favorite summer wines until then!

Austrian wine goes so very well with Summer, and at a recent Rosé tasting at the Wine Bottega in Boston, I discovered a new favorite Austrian wine, 2013 Mittelbach Rosé of Zweigelt.

Mittelbach rose

Zweigelt is such a fun grape, and I am always happy to see it. In this wine, a popping pink color makes way for notes of tart cherries and minerals. It’s a nice and dry Rosé; people don’t believe me when I talk about this, but there are obviously a lot of Rosé wines that are not White Zinfandel (Thank God.).

While I often think of Zweigelt as a winter grape, the Rosé is all Summer, and it paired perfectly with a lobster dinner. I can’t get enough lobster and steamers this Summer. I think the Winter seriously scarred me this year, and I am trying to soak up the season in any way possible.

Riesling #WineChat

When you think of Riesling, what passes through your mind? The first word you associate with this wine might just be sweet, and in many cases you would be correct. This past Wednesday, however, I participated in a Twitter #WineChat that featured drier Rieslings and compared Riesling from Germany, the Alsace region of France, and Austria. It was a delicious and interesting chat about wine, and it was fun to compare the three side-by-side.

all about Riesling

Summer of Riesling may be over, but this white wine is versatile and the perfect pairing for many, many food choices. We tasted the following wines:

2011 Selbach Riesling Dry, from the Mosel region of Germany

This wine featured lots of dry mineral notes with a hint of ginger spice and apple, along with some fresh herbs. It offers lots of acidity and mouthwatering fruit flavor.

2011 Domaine Ehrhart Riesling Vieilles Vignes

Lime zest, honeysuckle, and bursts of citrus filled this glass. While nicely acidic, this Riesling was richer than the first, with a more luscious mouthfeel, almost toward a Viognier to me, which I absolutely love.

Salomon Undhof Steiner Kogl Riesling

One of my fellow #WineChat participants used the words “lemon doughnut” to describe this wine. I loved the rich, toasty brioche notes along with the citrus flavors; the description was really spot on.

As I mentioned above, Riesling is incredibly food-friendly; someone on the chat noted it does NOT go well with beef or chocolate. I like pairing Riesling with Thai or Indian food the best, though we paired ours with a spiced tomato compote and triple crème cheese. A dry Riesling is also a perfect wine to bring to Thanksgiving dinner.

Thanks to the Wines of Germany, Wines of Austria, and Wines of Alsace for inviting me to participate in this chat. The wine was complimentary; all opinions, as always, are my own.
