In my 8+ years as a Dorchester resident, I had never been to Taste of Dorchester until last week. I don’t know why, but I learned quickly that I have been missing out! Taste of Dorchester benefits the Massachusetts Affordable Housing Alliance (MAHA) and brings together chefs from all over Dorchester for a delicious night with strong community ties. I can’t tell you enough how many great restaurants and shops are in Dorchester. You will just have to come over and check it out for yourself!

Breakfast favorite McKenna’s was serving up the meal they do best. They had French toast, pancakes, bacon, and most delicious of all, steak breakfast burritos. McKenna’s is an awesome little Savin Hill restaurant; the only downside is that they are always full. Calling ahead and getting takeout to eat on the beach is a good idea.

Tavolo DorchesterTwo of our favorites, Ashmont Grill and Tavolo, had the prettiest table in the room, decked out with flowers and lit up with the smiling face of owner and major community supporter, Chris Douglass. Ashmont Grill had one of my favorite bites of the night, a delicious, yet not very photogenic pumpernickel pretzel with pimiento cheese. It was divine.

Restaurante Cesaria

Taste of events are always great for discovering new restaurants, and Restaurante Cesaria was one of those. I’m excited to taste more from them!

Shanti DorchesterWe wouldn’t have missed the onion bhaji at Shanti or the chicken taco bowls at the Sea Breeze Mexican Grill, which I highly recommend for fresh, quality Mexican food.

sea breeze mexican grillWe were pretty stuffed by the time we got through our first round. In addition to the above, we had some fantastic ribs from Freeport Tavern, pulled pork from Abbey Park and chicken croquettes from the newly open ester.

Phillips Candy HouseHowever, we saved room for dessert, which included the juiciest chocolate covered strawberries from Phillips Candy House and macarons from Sweet Life Bakery, one of my Lower Mills haunts. Lemon macarons? So springy and perfectly soft and chewy at the same time. I may have had 3.

Sweet Life BakeryThe whole night was set to the backdrop of smooth jazz music, and the energy in the room was wonderful. It’s what I love about Dorchester; lots of smiles, kindness and community, mixed in with caring businesses. I can’t wait until the next Taste of Dorchester.

It is patio dining time in Boston, and we kicked it off Friday night on one of our favorite patios in the Boston area, Ashmont Grill. From the smells of wood burning to the lingering daylight to the always delicious cocktails and food, Ashmont Grill made yet another date night memorable.

Ashmont Grill

The patio features a fire pit, stone walls, overhead covers to make it a little les sunny, and even fleece blankets for chilly nights. Before dinner, I enjoyed a delicious sour cherry cocktail. Ashmont Grill always has fun and creative cocktails on the menu. It’s definitely a good place to go if you are looking for a drink.

To start, we shared a plate of the messy Trainwreck Fries. They’re basically smothered in cheese, bacon, sour cream, and jalapenos.

My husband ordered a wedge salad, which we ended up also sharing because it was amazing. Oven roasted tomatoes and lardons really make this salad special. The flavor in the tomatoes was incredible.

I had the Truffled English Pea Arancini, hearty balls of risotto with mushrooms and a tomato dipping sauce. Alongside that I had a bowl of lobster chowder which was delicious, but I was stuffed at this point.

We spent a good deal of time just relaxing after our meal and enjoying the cool evening. It was a perfect night for patio dining and a great way to kick off a fun weekend.

Other favorite Boston patios? Interestingly, Dorchester has a few. dbar has a gorgeous outdoor oasis, and The Ledge does as well. Sam’s at Louis one of my favorites in all of Boston. And of course, the roof deck at Legal’s Harborside is a great place for cocktails and bar bites, and I like the Legal Seafoods outdoor space in Harvard Square too.

Do you have a favorite restaurant patio in Boston or another city?

Summer nights are one of my favorite times to live in Dorchester. Unlike other neighborhoods I have lived in, there is a real sense of community. Neighbors stop and talk to each other, people know the neighborhood kids, and shop owners and staff are friendly.

Add to that the smell of the ocean and a handful of great restaurants with outdoor space, and you have yourself the perfect Friday night.

Having not been to Ashmont Grill in a few months, we decided to head there for an early Friday dinner, opting to sit inside because there was still a chill in the air.

Ashmont Grill

Ashmont Grill has an awesome back patio, completely enclosed from the noisy city streets, and complete with a fire pit and fleece blankets on the chairs. It is one of my favorite Boston outdoor dining experiences; if I had been feeling better, we would have been out there.

ginger sidecar

I had a hard time deciding between a beer, a glass of bubbly, or a cocktail, but Ashmont Grill’s cocktail menu is great, and I finally decided on a Ginger Sidecar which had a spicy kick and was delicious. It warmed me right up!

As we often do at Ashmont, we ordered a bunch of appetizers to share for dinner. When it comes to being able to try four or five things or to eat a big plate of one thing, I definitely go for the variety!

golden beet salad

First came the roasted beet and arugula salad with goat cheese, mandarin oranges, and candied walnuts. Heaven on a plate, a salad we both could easily eat every day. I love golden beets!

oysters

Next up, we shared a plate of oysters. They were great, but I need to be in an oyster mood, and I wasn’t.

spicy pork tacos

Our dinner course was spicy pork tacos with pickled onions and guacamole, tender, spicy pork on soft, warm tortillas with lots of flavor from the onions and a sprinkle of cilantro.

And, to quell my craving for fries, we shared the tempura veggies with a spicy aioli. It actually worked! These were served piping hot with a crispy coating and an addictive sauce. Though, if you are really, really in the mood for good fries, Ashmont’s “train wreck” fries, topped with bacon, cheese, sour cream, and pickled jalapenos are the way to go.

Dinner at Ashmont Grill is always a laid back, delicious experience with lots of great food and drink choices. Their weekend brunch is fantastic, and their Monday wine club, $35 for dinner and four wines, can not be beat.

Hmmm. . . Where in Dorchester will I eat next?
