Hello from Truro! It has been gray, rainy, and cold, but a gray and rainy beach day is still a beach day! I am heading back to Boston this morning and looking forward to a few fun events this week: tonight John Mariani (food and wine correspondent for Esquire Magazine) signing his book, How Italian Food Conquered the World at Bina Osteria, Wednesday a patio party at Sam’s at Louis, and Friday morning going home to see my family. . . on a plane!! Thank you fab Jet Blue sale for being cheaper than a car rental and saving me 10 hours of driving!

I love the Cape. I am pretty sure that Provincetown and Truro are two of the most magical places on the planet, and no matter where I live in the world, coming here will always be a travel priority. Even if I don’t go anywhere else, I want to be here.

lobster

Saturday nights of girls weekend are always dedicated to lobster.

Meet Lobby the lobster. We also had Larry and Lisa. I wanted to have a lobster race, but then I felt mean and backed out. My lobster would have won.

lobster

1.5 pounds of sweet, buttery bliss. New England love. The lobster dinner is simple, lobster, butter, corn, and plenty of wine, like this Secco that we picked up at The Urban Grape at their anniversary sale. It is inexpensive, tasty bubbly, perfect for summer. I highly recommend. And it comes in pink as well. Smile

The second part of the night is always karaoke. We always sing Sweet Caroline, but this year we mixed it up and ALSO sang Cherish. We are great singers.

The night always ends with dancing, then pizza at Spiritus. I probably shouldn’t share this crazy photo with the world, but what is life if you can’t laugh at yourself a little? I am certainly serious enough in day to day life. We had a fantastic evening, even without sun during the day. I can’t wait until next year!

A few weeks ago, I was browsing through Facebook and saw The Urban Grape’s update about a wine tasting to benefit the Animal Rescue League of Boston. I don’t think I have ever signed up for an event so fast. I didn’t even check my calendar, I just signed up. Raising money for animals and sipping wine are two of my favorite things!

The tasting was a collaboration between the folks from The Urban Grape and  The Urban Hound Hotel. I already knew this duo could throw a great party from my experience at the hotel’s open house. My expectations last night were far surpassed in what was a beautiful, delicious, and fun event.

The tasting itself was in a gallery at the Boston Design Center, a place I had never been, and for my budget’s sake, probably should never visit again. Since I didn’t know exactly where I was supposed to be, I spent my first 10 minutes checking out the building, which is full of beautiful furniture, upholstery and drapes, art, and other exquisite home décor items. Since some of my furniture is still from college, I was pretty much drooling at all of the beautiful things. Someday, someday.

The gallery itself was decorated with art inspired by and photos of women from The Women’s Lunch Place, a place I have had the opportunity to volunteer a few times. It is an inspiring place that not only cares for the physical needs of homeless women and children but treats them like the human beings that they are, inside and out. When I volunteered there, it was inspiring to learn that if one of their clients was sick in the hospital, they visited. They knew the women’s birthdays. The Women’s Lunch place provides that community that so many don’t have. I got teary for the first time in the evening, but it certainly wasn’t the last!

The wall on the way in was lined with treats from Polka Dog Bakery. Can’t forget the four-legged guests!

Secco Prosecco

The spread of food was absolutely gorgeous. There were all sorts of different cheeses, fresh fruit, skewers of meat, shrimp, cucumbers topped with hummus, crostini.

Of course, as I often do, I decided to wait until later in the evening to dig in and never got back to the table!

We did, however, taste some wine, the 2010 Fontezoppa Verdiccio di Matelica, 2010 Pares Balta Ros de Pac, 2010 Dom du Clos d’Alari “Petit Clos” Rose, and the 2006 Martilde “Zaffo” Bonarda.

The selection of wines was perfect, and TJ and Noah from The Urban Grape shared their expertise as they poured. I was already a huge fan of the Pares Balta, introduced to me at my very first Urban Grape visit last year. I also loved the Bonarda, which TJ pointed out, was a great food wine. Instead of tasting the other reds, I opted for a glass of Secco Prosecco, another Urban Grape introduction, and the perfect bubbly treat for a hot summer day.

The Urban Grape

At one point in the event, the President of the Animal Rescue League, Jay Bowen, spoke a little about the cause that would benefit from the entry fee, the Alice T. Whitney Helping Hands Fund which helps provide subsidized veterinary care for people in need. As a volunteer at the MSPCA, I can’t tell you how many animals end up in the shelter because of their owners financial situations, so it is nice to think that last night we helped keep some people and pets together!

Bowen also made mention of something amazing, something that made me tear up a little. . . The Urban Hound Hotel’s Shelter Dog in Residence program. The program is designed to shelter a homeless dog at the beautiful hotel for dogs, to take amazing care of it, and to help it find a home. How sweet is that?! This is just one of the ways that the hotel is involved in helping the ARL in Boston. Love.

The event was the perfect reminder in the middle of a bad week that there are such great, generous people everywhere. And it made me want to adopt a house full of cats and dogs 🙂

P.S. The Urban Grape is celebrating its anniversary this weekend and having a special 20% off mixed or full cases of wine to stock up for summer. You might find me there filling a box of bubbly tomorrow night. Holla!

Boston’s best waterfront dining space, and the site for a blogger dinner last night, Aragosta at the Fairmont Battery Wharf replaces Sensing and is the new place to be for sunset on a beautiful spring/summer evening.

Aragosta Boston

Last night I arrived a little early to the Aragosta event and got to take a few photos of the Boston waterfront, breathing in the salty air and, for what seemed like the very first time in my life, soaking up some spring sunshine.

Boston Harbor

I have said it before, but Boston does not utilize its expansive waterfront for dining the way that it could, but the Fairmont certainly makes an exception to that rule. Every little detail at Aragosta, from the sea grass to the comfy wicker couches to the fire pit tables makes it feel like New England summer.

The staff at Aragosta was amazing, first sharing with us some of their homemade cocktails which included a Moscow Mule and their signature drink, a Yellow Pepper Lemoncello Sour. Both drinks were beautiful and fresh, but the spicy ginger of the Moscow Mule won me over immediately. You know I love my ginger!

While we relaxed in the open air, we got to taste through many of Aragosta’s menu items:

Hand Crafted Selection of Salumi, Caponata, Hot Cherry Peppers, Crusty Bread

image

Bread with olives in olive oil

image

Fries cooked in duck fat with truffle aioli, a religious experience for a fry-lover like me. So good. I will return for cocktails and fries in the very near future.

fries

Lobster & Truffle Crostini, White Bean Puree – when you go to Aragosta, get this! Sweet chunks of lobster, plus truffle and creamy white beans on crunchy crostini = three messy but perfect bites.

image

Sautéed Calamari Salad, Baby Arugula, San Marzano Tomato, Balsamic

image

Braised Veal & Pancetta Meatballs, Soft Polenta, Arugula – I didn’t know there was veal in there, oops, but this meatball with soft, fluffy polenta was right up my tastebuds’ alley. It was rich, welcoming, and great for sharing.

We moved on to more house-made cocktails. Megan, Daisy, and I opted to have the Setanta Cinque:

The Italian version of the “French 75”; a cocktail that “hits with remarkable precision.” Aperol liquor shaken with freshly squeezed lemon juice charged with Prosecco.

I loved the slight bitterness of this cocktail. As a huge Aperol fan, I found the flavors to work really well, and I totally got that it was an Italian French 75.

Setanta Cinque

And then there was more food

Pappardelle Bolognese, Veal Cheek & Ox Tail Ragu, Porcini Powder – another favorite, this dish was hearty. It was full of love, the kind of recipe that comes from a nonna’s kitchen somewhere in Italy, straight to people’s hearts and bellies. Both the sauce and handmade pasta were beautiful.

pappardelle bolognese

Gnocchi, Slow Cooked Lamb Shoulder, Rosemary Citrus Jus, Asparagus – Soft, pillowy, melt-in-your-mouth gnocchi with meat just falling apart. I don’t eat lamb, but I didn’t realize this was lamb. . . another delicious oops. Winking smile

gnocchi and shortribs

I ended the night with a glass of Prosecco. There were more food courses which I missed photographing because Aragosta is one of those places where you just melt into the experience, the delicious flavors, textures, sights, sounds, and friends you are with. While I was invited as a blogger, I left as a huge fan and as someone who will be longing to return, especially when the warm weather awaits.

Prosecco

Thanks to the Fairmont staff for taking such great care of us and for the generous food and beverages they provided, making the first night of nice Boston weather one of the most memorable. I was sad my husband could not join me, but I will be bringing him back soon. And I am grateful they kept my brunch favorite, the Coast Guard Omelet, from the Sensing menu! Smile
