Hello from San Francisco and the Foodbuzz Festival! I have about 6 blog posts I need to write, but today is a busy day for Foodbuzz Featured Publishers, so I will keep it short with a review of Burger Bar.

Burger Bar probably wouldn’t be my first choice for a lunch destination, but the hubby likes a good burger, and I love Hubert Keller. Not to mention that the Burger Bar was within view of our hotel room at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel, San Francisco,  in the beautiful, Christmas-decorated Union Square Macy’s.

We were seated promptly for our 1:00 reservation and had a great view of Union Square and the Christmas tree setup, not to mention great food photography lighting!

Since burgers and beer go so well together, I started with an Eel River Organic Porter. It was yummy!

For lunch, I had the veggie burger with lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, jalapenos, and garlic aioli. Burger Bar’s veggie burger is no frozen patty out of a box. It is made of caramelized onions, lentils, mushrooms, peas, brown and white rice, potatoes, and pumpkin! I immediately wanted to recreate it at home.

On the side, we shared the jalapeno fried pickles. If fried pickles are on the menu, I have to have them!

My husband had the trio of different sliders. He liked them all, but gave a big thumbs up to the buffalo slider.

My burger was huge and very filling. All of the healthy ingredients, plus the toppings I chose, made for a tasty and substantial meal.

As you can see, I had to resort to eating with a fork because the burger was half the size of my face Smile

I barely ate half of it and was completely full. The food at Burger Bar is great, especially for you burger-lovers. The service,  however, was a little pushy, and spurred a conversation between my husband and me about our eating speeds and restaurant service. He is a super fast eater, and I am verrrrrrrry slow. Once our server saw his plate mostly empty, she returned repeatedly to try to take it, but I had not even made a dent in mine. I hated feeling rushed on vacation and probably ended up eating less than I would have if I felt more relaxed. I am sure my slow eating can be annoying, but I really like to enjoy eating and never end up way too stuffed because I am always conscious of how full I am. It works for me!

Overall, Burger Bar was worth a visit if you like burgers, a great view, and are a fan of celebrity chef Hubert Keller. Perhaps sitting at the bar might have resulted in a less fast paced meal, and I would probably go that route next time.

Are you a slow or fast eater? When you are eating out or shopping, do you prefer constant attention from staff, or like me, do you prefer to be left alone?

Meat-a Balls!

Getting my post-pneumonia self strong again would be so much easier if I was actually interested in eating. The past couple of weeks have not been my finest when it comes to cooking or eating well, and yesterday I mustered up all of my energy to create a hearty meal, at least for my husband to eat well.

Justin’s recent post on “tomato, onion, and butter” sauce got me thinking about making sauce, and since I am home all day for the moment and am in love with my new Le Creuset pot, I decided to make meatballs and sauce.

My sauce consisted of just a few ingredients: 2 teaspoons of tomato paste,1 can crushed tomatoes, 1 can fire roasted diced tomatoes, a small yellow onion, 2 cloves chopped garlic, a few teaspoons of basil-infused olive oil, and a few pats of Kerrygold butter. Mid-way through cooking, I also added a generous pour of Castello di amorosa Il Brigante red wine.

I started by sautéing the onions in a mix of olive oil and butter.

Once the onions had softened, I mixed in one of my favorite ingredients, tomato paste. I love the flavor that it adds to the sauce as well as to chili and soups.

I finally added in the rest of the ingredients and left the sauce to bubble on a very low flame for hours.

About 2 hours before dinner time, I returned to the kitchen to make the turkey meatballs. I used a container of ground turkey, 1 egg, 1 cup of panko bread crumbs, and generous shakes of both dry basil and red pepper flakes.

I used my hands (ewwww) to form them into meatballs and then lightly browned the meatballs on the outside in a pan lightly coated with olive oil. Once they were all browned, I placed them in the sauce, turned the heat up, and really got it bubbling for about 20 minutes before turning the heat back down and simmering until we were ready to eat.

I didn’t have the energy to make homemade pasta, so I used a new boxed fettuccine that I picked up at the grocery store, Ronzoni Garden Delight, a pasta that boasts a full serving of vegetables per serving.

It was very pretty and tasted just like regular old pasta.

I plated the pasta and topped it with the sauce and meatballs, a mix that became so rich and flavorful during the cooking process. It was a VERY good dinner! So good that I actually felt like eating a whole bowl of pasta and 3 meatballs. This is something that is best for a weekend or vacation day because, while I do make some good, quick pasta sauces, this really benefits from the time spent on the stove.

What do you like to cook most when you have the time?

I can’t believe it that I am leaving for the Foodbuzz Festival tomorrow! If you are going let me know so I can make sure to say hi! Smile

The third time was the charm. We had reservations to the highly-anticipated Island Creek Oyster Bar last Saturday and Sunday, and due to my illness cancelled both. Even though I wasn’t feeling fabulous on my last day of work, after a week stuck at home, I wanted to go out, and it had to be Island Creek Oyster Bar.

If you have been reading this blog for some time, you have probably seen plate after plate of raw oysters. We love them, especially when they are of the Island Creek or Wellfleet varieties. . . local IS best!

Island Creek Oyster Bar

I arrived at Island Creek Oyster Bar (menu here), which is at 500 Commonwealth Ave, earlier than my husband, lugging multiple bags of wine club wine, and a little frazzled. The second I walked in, I was welcomed, and my bags were magically removed from my tired shoulders and tucked away in the coat check. Thank you.

I sat at the beautiful, beautiful bar for awhile while I waited, sipping Prosecco and just looking around. You have to see it for yourself. Made of some sort of cool black stone, the bar stretches for most of the length of the room and is the perfect place for a few (dozen) oysters and drinks. It was full to capacity but still spacious which made it comfortable for me sitting alone or for groups or couples sitting together. Two thumbs up for not jamming the bar with stools.

Due to some horrendous traffic, my poor, tired husband was pretty late for our reservation, but the very friendly hostesses seated me at our table anyway when I gave up my bar seat for two people who wanted to sit together. I love that they didn’t give me an attitude about having my entire party there. Likewise, our server made me feel completely at home and served me a glass of Aubry Brut Champagne while I waited.

As I sat there, I got a chance to check out the décor, which is made up of muted greys, seats with wooden slats on the back, and walls covered in cages filled with oyster shells. It offers a cross between urban and beachy and nautical without being cheesy or a theme-y.

The Aubry Brut was the perfect choice for celebrating International Champagne Day. It had a nice gold hue and flavors of citrus and toast. Once my husband arrived, it was also the perfect choice for pairing with oysters.

We had a dozen: 4 Island Creek, 4 Moon Shoal from Barnstable, MA, and 4 Coupe Des Anges from Prince Edward Island. I watched Anne of Green Gables while I was sick; I had to have PEI oysters!

PEI Oysters

Other than one of the PEI oysters tasting really ick, these were delicious. The Island Creeks were my favorite, but I would eat oysters from all of these locations again.

We also indulged in a few hot dishes: A meaty crab cake with mustard sauce and apples, really excellent crab meat, slightly too salty, but otherwise really delicious.

These clams were perfectly cooked in a flavorful tomato broth that I could have easily eaten as a soup. I proclaimed the grilled bread perfection.

BBQ Glazed Shrimp

My favorite dish of the night, the sauce was tangy, the shrimp, again, perfectly cooked, and the grits were soft, smooth, creamy comfort. I will return again and again just for this.

With all of these delights from the sea, we were stuffed. Dessert looked so good, house-made cider donuts with caramel and cider, but we couldn’t eat another bite.

With Jeremy Sewall of Lineage at the helm and the focus on great local seafood, I had a feeling I would love Island Creek Oyster Bar, but it exceeded all of my expectations. They make everything in house, have a fun wine and beer list, and despite being in the busy Kenmore Square, maintain a laid back, comfortable feel.

The service was absolutely fantastic, from the second I arrived, all the way until we walked out the door. Everyone was friendly and accommodating without being overly so. I am excited to make this a regular in our restaurant rotation.

Happy Friday everyone! Are you oyster fans? What are you up to this weekend?
