I tweeted yesterday that I wanted to eat heirloom tomatoes with goat cheese or burrata for the rest of the summer, and there really is a good chance that I will try my best to make that a reality. Is there anything better than heirloom tomatoes?

They cheer me up with their gorgeous hues, and their unique flavors are special, there are no tomatoes like them, and this makes heirloom tomato season so special.

On Wednesday after work, I headed from my Monday/Wednesday office in East Cambridge along the Charles and on to Charles Street to pick up a few things at Savenor’s for dinner. Being out of town all weekend meant no groceries, and I was in need of heirlooms.

Thankfully, they had them.

I picked up a few things, including this capra cremosa al tartufo, truffled goat cheese, and called ahead to ask my husband to chill a bottle of Secco.

Once I got home, I washed and chopped the tomatoes, covered them with a generous sprinkle of crumbled goat cheese, salt, pepper, and olive oil. With the pour of a glass of bubbly, dinner was served.

I ate tomatoes until I was stuffed, and surprisingly I wasn’t hungry for the rest of the night.

This light meal was a first step in trying to get back into eating naturally what feels right to me. I have been all over the place, going overboard eating and drinking at events, then getting restrictive at home to make up for it and just feeling generally not great about my eating habits. Trusting that I know what I want and should eat is a little easier this time of year, and I plan on embracing the rest of the season to eat fresh, delicious, good-for-me food.

I also tweeted yesterday that, try as I might, I could not get into oatmeal. I really want to like it, but I find the texture to me awful, no matter what I mix in.

It made me realize that I don’t have to eat oatmeal. If I want yogurt and it makes me full, I’ll eat yogurt. I know that makes total sense, but lately I have been all aflutter in my head about what I am eating.

What foods are you gravitating toward right now? And for fun, what foods do you want to love, but just can’t get into?

Dinner on the Odyssey

Before I met a group of Boston bloggers at the dock, I met my husband in the Boston Harbor Hotel, the place we stayed the night of our wedding, where I got ready beforehand, and a place that always gives me butterflies ever since. We always feel celebratory in the hotel, so we toasted the weekend and our upcoming 5th anniversary with Prosecco.

When 6:00 rolled around, I went outside to find Rachel, who had planned the event as part of Boston Food Bloggers. I should note that the dinner was complimentary, courtesy of the group that owns the Odyssey. Our group waited around for everyone to arrive and then slowly boarded the Odyssey.

The tables were nicely set, and we all got to sit together which was nice. The cruise was a wine lover’s dinner, and the featured wines were from Westport Rivers, a local winery I have visited many times.

Dinner on the Odyssey

I of course went for the Westport Rivers RJR Brut, a bubbly sipper with lots of great acidity and that toasty nose that I love in a sparkling wine. The menu and server kept referring to sparkling wine as Champagne, which annoys me because it’s inaccurate, but I let it slide. Winking smile

Each diner chose three courses from a set menu which was small but filled with delicious-sounding choices. I had a hard time deciding, but eventually had the shrimp and corn chowder for my appetizer. It had a nice little kick to it, along with sweet shrimp and corn in a creamy base. I cleaned my bowl; this soup was seriously good.

For my main course I went with the Maple-Glazed Chipotle Chicken Breast which was perfectly cooked, tender, and flavored with a smoky tomato cream. I was pleasantly surprised to see just how perfectly cooked and hot the food was, considering the Odyssey is serving such a large number of people. Banquet style food can be bland, cold, and overcooked, and this was just the opposite.

Before dessert we all wandered up to one of the outdoor decks to get some air, stretch our legs, and get ready for our final course, dessert.

I decided on the Odyssey Signature Decadent Chocolate Torte which was wrapped in a rich chocolate ganache. I definitely enjoyed this cake. It was moist, not too sweet, and had a fudge-like texture, another win from the Odyssey kitchen.

All in all, I had a great evening dining with blogger friends on the Odyssey. The service could have been a little better, and I think by the time we docked we all felt a little antsy to get off the boat, but it was a different, fun way to spend a Friday evening.

Boston is moving up in the world. Hot new restaurants, celebrity chefs, and some of the best-ever use of its waterfront mark this summer in the city, and Wednesday night some friends, my husband, and I took full advantage of it.

After having a great meal at the new Legal Harborside, I couldn’t wait to return to visit its very recently opened roof deck.

I met Megan and Daisy at South Station, and we walked over to Liberty Wharf, where we later met my husband and Michelle.

Once we arrived at Legal Harborside, we made a beeline for the roof deck, knowing it would be crowded. Up the three flights of stairs, which reminded me how out of shape I am, and on to the roof deck we went.

Legal Harborside

The walk, and the short time we spent looking for a table on the deck, which is open seating, was totally worth it. Views over Boston Harbor and strong summer sun greeted us.

One of the main reasons we decided to visit the Legal roof deck, besides the views, were the pitchers of fancy cocktails that they feature. Many of the libations sounded good, but we had two that we could not stop thinking about.

First up, a pitcher of St. German cocktails: St. Germain, Rose Cava.

Pretty and bubbly in pink, you could really taste the floral notes in the rose cava and the herbal notes in the St. Germain. This cocktail is really light, perfect for the hot evening.

The one slight downfall of the roof deck is that the food menu is quite limited. Since I had my first day at my new part time social media gig at Zipcar, I didn’t get to each much, nerves and all, so I was ravenous.

Along with our first pitcher, we went with the hummus with za’atar spices and the kalamata and fig spread.

Both were delicious, but I definitely liked the pop of flavors in the hummus best. As we nibbled on our snacks, we also finished our St. German cocktails and moved on to the Seaport Spritzer made with Prosecco, Italian aromatized wines, and grapefruit.

I preferred this cocktail, loving the slight bitterness of it. The cocktails were both really well made, and the pitchers are a great value for groups. The roof deck is definitely a great place to go for a girls’ night out.

Eventually our hunger got the best of us; maybe the roof deck doesn’t serve meals because people would stay there forever otherwise? Ready to eat as soon as possible, we headed to Legal Harborside’s first floor, where we had a great dinner.

oysters

Hubs and I shared oysters, two from Wellfleet, and two French Kiss oysters from New Brunswick.

And I finally got the lobster roll I had been dreaming of and tweeting about. To be honest, I prefer a buttered lobster roll to lobster salad, but this was really good anyway. The lobster was tender, the roll buttery, and the fries a crispy, hot perfection.

We were lucky to get inside as the wind started whipping and the rain came down briefly after our meal; while some of the roof deck is covered, the part we were on was not.

Welcome to the neighborhood, Legal Harborside roof deck! I am pretty certain you will be very popular around these parts! Smile
