Well, I ate vegetarian for the entire week, but Thursday night’s dinner at Coppa pretty much included a week’s worth of meat. And if you are going to go whole hog, recent Chopped winner Jamie Bissonette is the chef to do it with.

A bunch of us started talking about having dinner at Coppa at Taste of the Nation, and Elina made it happen. Coppa finally takes reservations, making it a little easier to snag a table in their tiny South End dining room.

After a great week of work, on Boston’s nicest day in recent history, I first met Megan, Daisy, and Michelle for drinks at Franklin Café, and then we made our way to meet Elina and Bianca at Coppa.

Coppa

Coppa is the collaboration of well-known Boston chefs, Jamie Bissonette and Ken Oringer and is a true South End gem focused on Italian-inspired small plates made with locally sourced ingredients. It’s the kind of place you want to spend hours and hours and hours eating and drinking, and that’s just what we did.

There was lots of laughter over a few drinks Winking smile. I started with the Sardinian Lemonade which was a blend of Meletti Amaro, lemon, and prosecco. It was tart, a little bitter, and reminded me a little of an iced tea lemonade. Completely a summer drink.

Coppa is ideal for groups because it’s all about ordering tons of small plates and sharing. We ordered lots of dishes and still didn’t cover everything we wanted. Some of the highlights:

A salumi board with a variety meats including duck prosciutto, Prosciutto di Parma, and other tasty bites. I don’t even know what it was, but I liked the little circles the best. It had a rich, truffle-y flavor.

Wood roasted meatballs were one of my favorites of the evening.

Another favorite, Trophie pasta with pesto, potatoes, and parmesan, the ultimate comfort.

One of the specials, black cod crudo with burratta. Next time I would skip the cod and just go for the burratta. Cheese and fish is a weird combo.

My second time eating the Salsiccia pizza, and my second time loving it. The sausage and chewy crust offer a spicy kick, cooled by a glass of Bastianch Rosato.

I missed photographing a few items including the chicken livers (not my favorite) and some roasted asparagus with a not-so-nicely cooked poached egg.

We finished the evening off with a cheese board, bread pudding, and a bottle of sparkling Faive Merlot/Cabernet Franc, the first time I had a bubbly of those grapes but most definitely not the last!

And I may have also gone out to Delux after with Michelle and Daisy for a little more fun. Just maybe Smile

There were a few items at Coppa we weren’t crazy about, but as it was my second time there, I feel like I know now a bunch of items that I love and would order again and again. I love their wine program and cocktails; they can only serve cordials as far as liquor goes, and their cocktails are fresh and creative. It’s delightfully noisy, thankfully enough so to cover our conversation. I loved spending the evening with such wonderful friends, and I look forward to doing it again soon!

Birthday celebration, part three! On Saturday night, two of my friends took me out for my girls’ night out birthday celebration. Since I had been eyeing up their winter menu, I chose Union Bar and Grille in the South End. I’ve had great brunch, dinner, and cocktails at Union before, and I was looking forward to a repeat visit.

Once we got settled, a piping hot skillet of cornbread with salted butter was placed on the table.

Union Boston cornbread

The combination of sweet cornbread with salty butter was fantastic. And for some reason, I was incredibly hungry so this hit the spot. We decided to start off with a round of cocktails from Union’s creative cocktail menu. I had a Honeysuckle, which I think is the same drink I had earlier this winter.

Union Boston cocktails

We decided to start with their East vs. West oysters and the mussels, steamed in wine with Tasso ham and smoked tomatoes. The oysters were shucked really badly with lots of grit and pieces of shell, but the mussels were great. I love the addition of a smoky meat with mussels, whether it be sausage or ham. They were perfectly cooked and delicious.

After our appetizers and cocktails, we decided to toast with some Prosecco while we eagerly anticipated our entrees.

I knew exactly what I was going to have for dinner, ever since I saw it on the menu in January, hand rolled gnocchi with wild mushrooms, chard, and truffle porcini cream.

gnocchi at Union Boston

The gnocchi were pillowy, melt-in-your-mouth perfection with a fragrant, creamy truffle-laced sauce. I would have liked a little bit more chard to balance out the dish, but otherwise, it was absolutely perfect, and I could eat it again and again.

creme brulee

I was pretty stuffed after completely cleaning up the bowl of gnocchi, but I couldn’t help but eat several large spoons of vanilla crème brulee which was incredible. Sweet and creamy with real vanilla bean flavors, it paired perfectly with the shot of espresso that kept me awake for the rest of the night.

Our leisurely dinner at Union was followed by drinks at Gaslight and another drink at my neighborhood bar, The Banshee. It ended up being a late night that was a ton of fun. We don’t get together nearly enough because of how busy life can be, and I love hanging out with these girls!

Do you have a hard time scheduling in time to see friends and family? When was your last really fun girls’ (or guys) night out?

Dogs and wine, wine and dogs, what’s not to love? This past Friday evening I finally had the opportunity to go inside the much-anticipated Urban Hound Hotel in Boston’s South End. I don’t even have a dog, but as a dog lover and MSPCA dog walker, I couldn’t wait to see the inside of a building I had been passing by for so many months.

The Urban Hound

Luckily, The Urban Hound Hotel’s open house was open to everyone, dog owners or not, and I made plans with a fellow Boston blog lover, Shannon, to meet at the open house. Before going in, I snapped a shot of the brick exterior and minimalist outdoor signage.

Once inside, I found Shannon and we went for a wander. There were tables with snacks for the human party guests. . .

And the doggie spa area featured a tub filled with bottles of Secco Italian Bubbles Prosecco. . .

There were also a myriad of doggie delights for sale. Kneecap anyone? Winking smile

The Urban Hound

While wandering, we ran into Natalie with her husband and their dog Weber, a pooch I had been hoping to meet. I can’t believe I didn’t get a photo, but he is an adorably fluffy, friendly, and gentle Portuguese water dog.

We also met an Irish wolf hound who weighed in at 285 pounds!! He was like a small horse but completely sweet and gentle as well.

The Urban Hound

The hotel and daycare digs at The Urban Hound Hotel are cool enough to be part of a hotel for humans, but these are just for dogs. Hotel rooms feature bright and comfy furnishings.

But dogs aren’t spending all their time lounging in their hotel rooms! There is plenty of indoor and outdoor play space.

Dogs played until they were tuckered out. It was quite the scene!

Dogs at The Urban Hound enjoy the following daily schedule:

Morning
6:00am
Rise and Shine! Breakfast and out!
Rest time until 7:30am then PLAY!

8:00am – 5:30pm
day care session

(organized according to dog size, temperament and age)

Evening
6:00pm – 7:00pm
Dinner, out, snuggle time.
8:00 Lights Out!

Sounds like a fun day, doesn’t it!

I won’t lie when I say I was blissfully happy surrounded by all of those dogs. I could have played with and watched them for hours. The Urban Hound is a very cool place, and I also love that they often do activities that support the Animal Rescue League of Boston and other organizations. As a longtime volunteer in an animal shelter, I have seen SO many abandoned, neglected, and abused dogs of all breeds and ages up for adoption. Due to the poor economy, these organizations are almost always full of homeless pets and can use all of the help and awareness they can get!

The Urban Hound Hotel gets two thumbs up from me, and it seemed like it got two paws up from its four-legged guests! If I had a dog and was taking a trip or needed doggie daycare, I would definitely consider this place!

Do you have a dog or are you hoping to be a doggie parent in the future? What kind of dog, and what is his/her name?
