And so very happy about it! Our last visit to Bergamot, the year-old Somerville restaurant, was last summer, and you may recall that while we loved the food and beverages, we thought there were some service issues that needed to be worked out. We knew we would return, but it just hadn’t happened.

For quite awhile, my friend Megan has touted Bergamot’s deliciousness, especially the creativity of their dessert chef, and over Twitter one day, we decided we had to go. Daisy, Emily, and Amy joined the conversation, and soon we had a dinner date.

Bergamot

I was first to arrive, and I would like to note that the above photo was taking at around 6:45 in the evening. Hooray for daylight! Even though it was a chilly evening, it was starting to feel like spring, and I enjoyed having fun plans for a Sunday night, typically a time of dread.

Bergamot

Once Megan arrived, we sat down at our table and waited for the others. I got another chance to look around and remembered how much I love Bergamot’s sunny and welcoming décor. It is so pretty.

Muller Thurgau

Once everyone arrived, we ordered a bottle of sparkling Schloss Mühlenhof  Dass 1st Müller-Thurgau

amuse

We were each presented with an amuse bouche of a yellow beet with pickled onion. This perfect little bite reminded me of summer, and I could have eaten an entire bowl of it. I love beets!

Unable to decide on appetizers, we opted to share a few, the salmon pastrami, Berkshire pork belly ravioli, grilled Griggstown quail, and the grilled marinated shrimp.

Bergamot

The quail was probably my least favorite, but I still enjoyed it, especially the creamy polenta that it was resting on. The grilled shrimp were another blissful reminder of summer, flavorful with that just-grilled taste, served with crunchy greens, oranges, and perfectly fried olives. My favorite of the four was definitely the pork belly ravioli, served in a creamy sauce and stuffed with rich pork belly.

After hearing the other ladies speak highly about Bergamot’s cocktail selection, we decided on a round of cocktails to go with dinner. It was tough to choose from the creative cocktail menu, but I finally decided on the Chambery Gimlet made of Beefeater London gin, rosemary, lime, and Vermouth.

Chambery Gimlet

I loved the tartness of the lime and the fragrant rosemary.

We all had a pretty difficult time deciding on entrees as well, and the chef kindly sent us each out a serving of the trout, one of my top choices on the menu and the entrée I am definitely ordering next time. It had crispy skin and a rich, meaty, and buttery texture. The beet fondue and apples underneath were an incredible addition to the fish. Yum.

As during my last Bergamot experience, I ordered the plaintain gnocchi, little balls of crisp-on-the-outside plantain topped with a rich, perfectly salty. Creamy avocado and black beans round out the dish.

Dinner at Bergamot

If all of that food wasn’t enough, there was dessert. I knew there was no way Megan would let us leave without having dessert, and after checking out the menu and wanting every single thing, I suddenly knew what she was talking about.

Bergamot desserts

The five of us decided on four desserts, the Bergamot-scented panna cotta, Meyer lemon beignets (with tequila ice cream!), chocolate-chipotle cake, and the special, a pine nut baklava with a goat cheese cream whose name I can not recall.

Bergamot desserts

Bergamot also sent out a plate of their version of carrot cake for us to share. Carrot cake isn’t always my favorite, but this take on it was elegant, with silky cream cheese frosting and rum-soaked raisins.

Bergamot desserts

The chocolate-chipotle cake was one of the best desserts I have ever had It combined my love of spice and smoky flavors with rich quality chocolate in a dense little cake. The beignets were bursting with tart lemon flavor, accented by the tequila ice cream for a sunshine-y dessert. The baklava was crunchy, buttery, and sweet with goat cheese perfection, the panna cotta firm and aromatic, one of the best panna cotta’s I have had, and I am not always a fan.

It was a FULL dessert table, but somehow we managed to eat them all! I have to say, and you know I am not a dessert-eater, I would order dessert at Bergamot again in a heartbeat. We mentioned it a few times during dinner, but the portions at Bergamot are really nicely-sized leaving room for said desserts.

The service at Bergamot was fantastic. It seems Bergamot has hit its stride and has become a favorite for many people throughout Boston. I for one can not wait to return!

What is the best dessert you have eaten recently?

Staying true to our plan of a day trip a weekend, yesterday we embarked on another New England adventure, this time a visit to our favorite local winery, Travessia Urban Winery in New Bedford, plus a few extra stops that made for a perfect day. We were joined by our soon-to-be-married friends Adrienne and Matt; wine and beer tasting along the Coastal Wine Trail, for those of you in MA and RI, is a great way to spend a day catching up with friends.

Our first stop was lunch in New Bedford at Ginger Grill and Tea House, a great Korean restaurant just a few doors down from Travessia.  This was our second time eating at Ginger Grill, and we once again loved the food, the clean, calming atmosphere, the prices, and the friendly staff. Starting your day full of fresh, flavorful food from Ginger Grill is the way to go.

I had the vegetarian Bibim noodles with a complimentary side of carrot kimchi salad and a pot of spicy ginger tea.

The flavors were so bright and clean, and I felt really good after lunch. An added bonus, the compostable plates!

Once we had eaten, we walked down to Travessia for a tasting. While I love all of their wines, I was most excited to try a new release, Dilemma. Unsurprisingly, we loved this wine, which is a mix of 60% Pinot Grigio and 40% Pinot Noir, both Massachusetts-grown. It is an impressive, well-balanced wine with a nice, almost mouthwatering acidity and a hint of sweetness. With the big movement toward local food, it is incredibly exciting to have access to such high quality wines that are grown and made just under an hour from Boston.

After we finished our Travessia tasting, we decided that, since we were so close, we would check out the Just Beer brewery and tasting room down the road in Westport.

Just Beer

Just Beer, formerly the Buzzard’s Bay Brewing Company, is a small brewery on a beautiful property, offering tastings on Saturdays only during the Spring. While we visited, we tasted both a light beer, their Golden Flounder, and a slightly darker, more amber ale, Moby D.

Just Beer Moby D

Not usually a fan of light beers, I did enjoy the Golden Flounder and think it would be perfect for a hot summer day. But we liked the Moby D the best and decided to bring some home with us.

Our next stop was right down the road, Westport Rivers Winery. If you live in Boston, you may have tried one of Westport Rivers’ delicious sparkling wines. I definitely have enjoyed their Blanc de blancs on more than one occasion, but they have so much more than sparkling wine!

Westport Rivers Winery

The Westport Rivers tasting room and store are located in a beautiful old farmhouse overlooking the currently bare vineyards. There will be leaves of green someday, New England. Someday.

The tasting menu for the day was a mix of still and sparkling wines including what ended up being my favorites, the Westport Brut, Rkatsiteli, and the Pineau de Pinot dessert wine. I loved the toasty, brioche-like nose and flavors of the Brut. The Rkatsiteli, besides being fun to pronounce (the R is its own syllable!) is a grape originally from the country of Georgia and produces a fresh lemony wine with some nice mineral notes, and the Pineau de Pinot is a lovely pink dessert wine that is not too sweet at all. The tasting room staff recommended it mixed with bubbly for a nice little cocktail. Yum.

We finished up our day with a drive over to the lovely Horseneck Beach and an early dinner/second lunch at The Back Eddy. I think we were all a little tired from the fresh air and tastings at this point, and it was nice to sit back with some clam chowder while looking out at these views. I can not wait until summer!

New England has so much to offer, and I love that I can have days like yesterday to remind me just how lucky we are to live here.

Have you ever been to a local winery or brewery where you live?

With snow in the forecast for tonight and a week that seems it will never end, I thought a little virtual vacation was in order for this afternoon’s post. After a brief stop in Yountville for some Bouchon Bakery decadence, we started the winding drive North and West to head toward Healdsburg where we would once again be touring one of our wine club wineries, Michel-Schlumberger

One our way through the very quiet and undeveloped Alexander Valley AVA, we decided to make a random stop, as we often do while visiting wine country, at Field Stone Winery

Field Stone

As we parked the car in the small lot, it was impossible to not be enchanted by the wineries’ surroundings. As far as the eye could see, wild chamomile flowers, vineyards ready to awaken for the spring, and rolling green hills filled the space. And it was quiet, very, very quiet.

Field Stone Winery

We made our way up the path to the barrel room and tasting room, passing by a bottling truck that was filling bottles with the latest Field Stone wine. After a friendly welcome from the men working on the truck, we went inside, where we were brought into a small, cozy tasting room.

Field Stone Wines

Field Stone is well known for its hearty reds, and I especially loved the 2008 Vineyard Select Syrah for its rich flavors of spice and black cherry. We also had the opportunity to compare and contrast 2007 and 2008 Vintage Ports

A sip of Port, a bite of dark chocolate, a sip of Port, some more chocolate. . . you know how it goes.

tasting chocolate and port

But again, as much as we loved the reds at Field Stone, we were on a mission to stock up on whites which resulted in the purchase of Field Stone Viognier and Gewurtztraminer. The Gewurtztraminer was perhaps my favorite wine of the day, dry but with some great fruit flavors. As we discussed in the tasting room, it will be the perfect Thai takeout wine. The Viognier was not on the tasting menu, but when I asked to try it, our host happily opened a bottle. Viognier is quickly becoming one of my favorite grapes because of its weight and luscious mouth feel. Just like with my favorite Viognier blend, Sheldon’s La Naris, the Field Stone Viognier is one that you you almost want to swish around in your mouth for awhile before drinking it. Sounds a little odd, but trust me on this. Smile

As we tasted through the wines, we learned a bit about the property, and our tasting room host encouraged us to go around the back of the building to check out their century-old Petite Syrah vines. Like gnarly little gnomes, these vines have produced quite a bit of fruit and have seen a lot over the years!

Field Stone old vines

Field Stone could appear off the beaten path, but it is really on the way from Napa Valley to Sonoma County if you are traveling North. It was a lovely spot to stop with great staff, delicious wines, and unstoppable views. Go there!
