Wow! Wow, wow wow! What an opening event. . . Red carpet treatment from start to finish, the Del Frisco’s Boston party last night was a complete blast. Full of delicious food, swanky cocktails, Moet & Chandon Champagne, and the best service I have ever seen, this was truly a night to remember.

The outcome of the evening? We have weekend reservations for dinner. I thought the food and service was so impressive, that I need to share it with my husband.

One problem, it was cold. Very, very cold. I luckily got a lift to the restaurant, but even in my short walk, the whipping winds bit at my bare legs and tousled my skirt. I was excited to get inside and down the red carpet.

DelFrisco's Boston

Once inside, I met my friend Megan, and we made our way into the main event where we eventually found Michelle and fiancé Brett, Renee and Ryan and Fiona. There was bubbly to start, and I checked out the walls, and walls, and walls of wine inside DelFrisco’s. They are set up for wine lovers, that is for certain!

The party featured an ice luge, which none of us had seen in awhile, but it was a perfect way for pouring icy cocktails.

We made our way through the massive displays of food, from the beef sandwiches. . .

To the incredibly impressive raw bar that featured shrimp, oysters, and crab.

We sampled a variety of passed bites, including bruschetta, cheese steak roll ups, and my favorite, the crab cake. Everything was delicious.

After awhile, Michelle, Megan, Brett, and I decided to brave the outdoors. The views from Del Frisco’s are stunning, but it was a cold and windy evening, a little too cold for outdoor dining in Boston! Still, we dealt with the elements to have an Absolut Boston cocktail. How could you not?! The bartenders themselves were Absolut Boston, friendly, charming, and tired of the lame weather in our lovely city!

Eventually we found our perfect spot in one of Del Frisco’s Board rooms where we found large dessert and Moet displays. Those aren’t munchkins below, they are cake balls! The Board rooms are gorgeous; I would definitely consider them for a private dinner or meetings.

I sampled a lemon cake ball, a cheesecake ball, and a chocolate cup filled with mousse, in addition to several glasses of a glass of Moet & Chandon. Winking smile

Moet

While my attendance at Del Frisco’s opening party was complimentary, it was one of those experiences that I wanted to have again and again, thus the reservation for this Saturday. Boston has steakhouses, but DelFrisco’s does it in a new, modern,  way, with views of all of Boston. I have mentioned before that we are water signs, and a restaurant with views like Del Frisco’s is right up our alley. Boston totally needed this!

Spring into Malbec! World Malbec Day was celebrated this past Sunday, and to assist in my celebration of the day, and Malbec in general, the kind people at Frederick Wildman & Sons sent me a few bottles of Malbec to try. Since I was working with a wine from Argentina, I also decided to cook up a little Argentine-inspired dinner, empanadas, but with a vegetarian, Italian twist.

tomatoes and basil

Caprese empanadas! I started out by making a beautiful, summer filling of shredded mozzarella, a chiffonade of basil, and chopped tomatoes. As you see above, I bought some gorgeous tomatoes, or so I thought. On the inside, they were still wintry, pale, mealy, bleh. Luckily I had a can of chopped tomatoes that I was able to quickly drain for the filling. It helps to be prepared!

tomato, mozzarella, basil

I knew making the empanada filling would be the easy part, but the dough intimidated me a little, as dough tends to do. This dough, however, could not have been easier to work with. I followed a recipe for Chilean Empanadas for the dough, but I substituted butter for shortening. Many empanada recipes use shortening or even lard, but I really preferred to use butter. After some research, I found that it is a 1:1 ratio for butter to shortening, and I got to chopping my Kerrygold into little cubes.

Kerrygold butter

For whatever reason, blending the butter into the dry ingredients this time was a cinch! Perhaps practice makes perfect? Smile Once I added the milk and let the dough rest for 20 minutes, it was time to roll it out.

empanada dough

I usually have a sticky mess of dough or something so dry and cracking that I can not roll it out. This dough was so fun to work with!

empanada dough

I rolled it out on our kitchen table and started cutting circles with a large tupperware container to make the empanadas.

empanadas

Once the dough circles were cut, I added a scoop of the empanada filling, then sealed each empanada with a fork and brushed with egg. My empanadas cooked at 375 for 35 minutes.

empanadas

Sadly, I overstuffed and undersealed the empanadas, so they all exploded a little in the oven. But they dough became light, flaky, fluffy, and golden brown, just as I had hoped. Though not much to look at, the empanadas were quite delicious with a cheesy, garlicky center, dotted with fragrant bits of basil

empanadas

I served the empanadas with a side of orange-infused plantains, and there was, of course Malbec. We didn’t drink all of these bottles in one night; as you can see from the photos, they are all at different times. I received the Malbec about a month ago, and we have been sampling ever since.

Trapiche Malbec Don David Malbec Cuma Organic Malbec

Here we have a 2008 Trapiche Oak Cask Malbec, a Michael Torino Estate Don David Reserve Malbec, and a 2009 Michael Torino Estate Cuma Malbec, made with organic grapes. Each of these Malbecs exhibited that gorgeous, dark red-purple color that Malbec is known for, but I loved how different each of these wines were.

The Trapiche offered aromas and flavors of cherry vanilla and a little bit of oak and cedar. The Don David, which we sipped with the empanadas, was smokier and spicier, still with nice fruit flavors, but with a long, lingering finish.

The Cuma was, to me, the fruitiest, with flavors of baked fruit, like dark cherry pie. I really enjoyed all of the Malbecs we tasted (and there are more!), and it was interesting to learn a little more about Malbec, especially how it goes well with Easter and spring dishes such as lamb.

Up next will be some Chilean wine and hopefully a Chilean recipe or two. I love how receiving wine samples encourages me to try new things and to look up new recipes.

Have you tried a new-to-you food, wine, or other item lately?

Last night, we had some friends over to participate in another TasteLive! wine tasting with wine bloggers from all over the US. I knew the last TasteLive! event would be hard to top; we actually tasted in the home of the TasteLive! folks in California, and it was a lot of fun.

Rodney Strong Sauvignon Blanc Rodney Strong Chalk Hill Chardonnay Rodney Strong Reserve RRV Pinot Noir Rodney Strong Symmetry

The theme for last night’s tasting was “A Bright Idea” with Rodney Strong Vineyards. In addition to the follow four bottles of wine, I also received an energy-saving light bulb in the mail, the goal behind the tasting to talk about the wines but also the winery’s Green Light Pledge to switch out incandescent bulbs for more energy-saving bulbs. We happened to need a new light bulb for our hallway, so it worked out well!

TasteLive event

The tasting lineup was spectacular. I love Rodney Strong wines and visiting their winery, and last night just made me want to return!

2009 Charlotte’s Home Estate Sauvignon Blanc

We started off with the Sauvignon Blanc, and everyone went back for a second pour. This is a perfect summer wine, light, crisp, with some mineral notes and citrus flavors. It retails at $13.50 which, I think, is a steal for such a beautiful wine.

2009 Chalk Hill Estate Chardonnay

I am not always a Chardonnay fan, but there is definitely something about the Chalk Hill Chard that I love. While Chardonnay can be too buttery and oaky, this had some very nice vanilla flavors.

2008 Reserve Pinot Noir

I tend to not gravitate toward Pinot Noir, but this really packed a flavorful, well structured punch. It had multiple layers of flavors, from the raspberry and cherry fruit side to the slight white pepper on the finish.

2007 Symmetry

Stunning. The 2007 Symmetry Red Meritage, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Cab Franc, and Petit Verdot, has so much going on. It is velvety and smooth, luscious, with dark fruit and chocolate flavors. This is a special occasion wine, at $55 retail, and if you ever have the chance to taste it, go for it!

I loved tasting Rodney Strong wines and chatting with some people from the winery. Below are a couple of photos from the tour we took on our last visit.

And speaking of Sonoma County, I am excited to announce another giveaway, this one related to the Wine Road. One of the great Wine Road events I have had the ability to attend was the Food and Wine Affair. This event has its own cookbook, Tasting Along the Wine Road, which is a comprehensive collection of food and wine pairings, and since there were two of us, we got two books. Since I love it so much, I thought I would give away a copy to one of you. It’s a really beautiful book with some info on wine and the Sonoma County AVA’s (American Viticultural Areas) where wine is grown.

Tasting Along the Wine Road

To enter, simply leave a comment and let me know your favorite food and wine pairing, your favorite place to enjoy a glass of wine, or any other wine-related tidbit I should know about you. Dislike or can’t drink wine? Tell me! The recipes are still great, so you should still enter!

And the winner of the chocolate giveaway is. . . Gina! Gina please email with me your address so I can get you your chocolate! Thanks for entering, everyone. And stay tuned for another giveaway later in the week, this one to a Boston store.
