A few weeks ago, I was browsing through Facebook and saw The Urban Grape’s update about a wine tasting to benefit the Animal Rescue League of Boston. I don’t think I have ever signed up for an event so fast. I didn’t even check my calendar, I just signed up. Raising money for animals and sipping wine are two of my favorite things!

The tasting was a collaboration between the folks from The Urban Grape and  The Urban Hound Hotel. I already knew this duo could throw a great party from my experience at the hotel’s open house. My expectations last night were far surpassed in what was a beautiful, delicious, and fun event.

The tasting itself was in a gallery at the Boston Design Center, a place I had never been, and for my budget’s sake, probably should never visit again. Since I didn’t know exactly where I was supposed to be, I spent my first 10 minutes checking out the building, which is full of beautiful furniture, upholstery and drapes, art, and other exquisite home décor items. Since some of my furniture is still from college, I was pretty much drooling at all of the beautiful things. Someday, someday.

The gallery itself was decorated with art inspired by and photos of women from The Women’s Lunch Place, a place I have had the opportunity to volunteer a few times. It is an inspiring place that not only cares for the physical needs of homeless women and children but treats them like the human beings that they are, inside and out. When I volunteered there, it was inspiring to learn that if one of their clients was sick in the hospital, they visited. They knew the women’s birthdays. The Women’s Lunch place provides that community that so many don’t have. I got teary for the first time in the evening, but it certainly wasn’t the last!

The wall on the way in was lined with treats from Polka Dog Bakery. Can’t forget the four-legged guests!

The spread of food was absolutely gorgeous. There were all sorts of different cheeses, fresh fruit, skewers of meat, shrimp, cucumbers topped with hummus, crostini.

Of course, as I often do, I decided to wait until later in the evening to dig in and never got back to the table!

We did, however, taste some wine, the 2010 Fontezoppa Verdiccio di Matelica, 2010 Pares Balta Ros de Pac, 2010 Dom du Clos d’Alari “Petit Clos” Rose, and the 2006 Martilde “Zaffo” Bonarda.

The selection of wines was perfect, and TJ and Noah from The Urban Grape shared their expertise as they poured. I was already a huge fan of the Pares Balta, introduced to me at my very first Urban Grape visit last year. I also loved the Bonarda, which TJ pointed out, was a great food wine. Instead of tasting the other reds, I opted for a glass of Secco Prosecco, another Urban Grape introduction, and the perfect bubbly treat for a hot summer day.

The Urban Grape

At one point in the event, the President of the Animal Rescue League, Jay Bowen, spoke a little about the cause that would benefit from the entry fee, the Alice T. Whitney Helping Hands Fund which helps provide subsidized veterinary care for people in need. As a volunteer at the MSPCA, I can’t tell you how many animals end up in the shelter because of their owners financial situations, so it is nice to think that last night we helped keep some people and pets together!

Bowen also made mention of something amazing, something that made me tear up a little. . . The Urban Hound Hotel’s Shelter Dog in Residence program. The program is designed to shelter a homeless dog at the beautiful hotel for dogs, to take amazing care of it, and to help it find a home. How sweet is that?! This is just one of the ways that the hotel is involved in helping the ARL in Boston. Love.

The event was the perfect reminder in the middle of a bad week that there are such great, generous people everywhere. And it made me want to adopt a house full of cats and dogs 🙂

P.S. The Urban Grape is celebrating its anniversary this weekend and having a special 20% off mixed or full cases of wine to stock up for summer. You might find me there filling a box of bubbly tomorrow night. Holla!

Of all of the things I did at Eat, Write, Retreat, EAT was definitely one of the things I did the most. Between the opening reception, Capitol Hill Food Tour, swag bag snacks, and free hotel breakfast, I wasn’t feeling hunger pangs that weekend!

McCormick & Schmick's

Saturday morning was busy, with a fabulous food writing session by Monica Bhide, and by the time that was over, we were ready for some sunshine and food.

Lunch was scheduled for a few blocks away at McCormick & Schmick’s, a seafood restaurant I have eaten at and enjoyed many times in Boston. The very warm and sunny walk was glorious, and we were welcomed to tables set just for us.

Mirassou wine

Mirassou provided the wine for the lunch. I love wine at lunch; it makes any occasion feel special, and it reminds me of being in Europe. In short, Americans should have more wine with lunch.

We started with a cool, sweet glass of Moscato and a warm welcome from the chef, who explained each course and told us a little bit about the farm fresh ingredients used.

McCormick & Schmick's

First up was an anchovy and roasted beet salad. It was beautifully plated with some lovely reduced balsamic vinegar. I did not care for the anchovies, but I did try them! I loved the sweet beets, greens, and the balsamic. I thought the Moscato was a little too sweet for the first course, but that could just be me. I still enjoyed it!

Next up was a flaky, fabulous wild halibut with mushrooms, baby bok choy, in a miso broth. Bok choy should definitely be used more often! The fresh halibut had a salty flavor from the miso, and the mushrooms really rounded the whole thing out with their earthiness. The fish was paired with Mirassou Pinot Noir, a great choice if you are having fish and dining with red wine lovers. Deep cherry flavors and a nice acidity made this a great wine for pairing with the main course.

Ooof. After all of that, there was more wine and dessert! Look.at.that.dessert. Strawberry rhubarb shortcake with a homemade biscuit was topped with mascarpone cream and vanilla ice cream and paired with a stunning Mirassou Riesling. I think the Moscato would have gone better with this little bowl of heaven, but with its crisp, stone fruit flavors the Riesling was a perfect wine for a hot day.

Our Eat, Write, Retreat swag bags included a couple of gift certificates to McCormick & Schmick’s, and I can’t wait to use them for oysters, chowder, and beers, my favorite things to get at the McCormick & Schmick’s bar.

Another win for the Eat, Write, Retreat attendees, and another huge thank you to the planners!

Tis the season for dining out in the North End! I love this neighborhood year-round, but when summer comes, the windows of the restaurants open on to the streets, there are bustling crowds, and of course the weather is warm enough for gelato!

The North End offers so many different Italian eateries, making it difficult to choose, but when a bunch of us got together for dinner last week I knew I wanted to try Ristorante Damiano. You see, Executive Chef Damien DiPaola is a fellow UMASS alum and owned the Amherst-area restaurant, Carmelina’s, a place I never got to in college. Since I missed Carmelina’s I knew I had to get to Damiano, and we had the perfect night for it.

The interior of Ristorante Damiano features lovely exposed brick, the walls decorated with old North End photos.

Once we got settled at our table, we ordered a bottle of wine, Planeta Segreta Bianco, a blend of Grecanico, Chardonnay, Viognier, and Fiano. Then we started in on the extensive menu.

Ristorante Damiano

Damiano features piattini , small plates, and we ordered several to share.

Roasted Beet Salad – Arugula, goat cheese, toasted pignoli, blood orange vinaigrette

This light, refreshing dish offered a peppery bite from the arugula and was a nice, summery way to start the meal.

Lamb Lollipop – Dipped in pistachio crust, mint pesto, rubio glaze, fruit Macedonia.

I didn’t try these, but I loved the presentation!

lamb lollipops

Garlic Shrimp Sautéed Ebi Shrimp, garlic, thyme, lemon, over spinach

Shrimp and garlicky greens should be on my table every night. I loved the simple. flavorful ingredients

shrimp

Braised Wild Mushrooms – Garlic, sage, trace of tomato, truffle oil, Parmigiano polenta

The deep earthy flavors of both the mushrooms and the sage went nicely with the pop of juicy tomatoes.

Carbonara – Pancetta, egg, parmigiano, cracked pepper, spaghetti

Mmm creamy, pepper, rich, and delicious. The spaghetti was nice and thick, perfectly coated with sauce

carbonara

We also had fried baby eggplant in tomato sauce and a steaming bowl of mussels with a side of fresh rolls. I loved every bite of dinner and found the small plates eating style to be fun, especially with friends who are up for trying all sorts of different things.

We followed up dinner with cocktails at nearby Bacco at a table next to an open window, rounding out a perfect North End evening.

Do you have a favorite neighborhood to visit in your city? Is there a restaurant you are more likely to visit with a big group?
