Sometimes it’s too hot to cook. Sometimes you feel overwhelmed (gratefully, happily overwhelmed) with more work than you can do in a seven day week. Sometimes you miss your significant other who happens to be extremely close to finishing his Masters thesis, in addition to working until after midnight several days in a row.

Last night all of those sometimes collided, and Wine Wednesday became takeout sushi and sangria night. We used to have sushi Thursday. We’ll call last night “Give me wine and sushi or I will cry Wednesday”.

Getting into the kitchen to whip up a summery sangria based on the ingredients we had in the house was therapeutic for me, as kitchen time often is.

For this sangria, you will need a bottle of dry white wine like this Travessia Pinot Grigio I found. I loved this when at its release and was actually surprised to find we had a bottle left when I was digging through the wine fridge.

You will also need a cup of Lillet Blanc. Never had Lillet? It’s a delightful aperitif, great in cocktails, and a perfect match for white sangria.

Lillet

Since we have a boatload of sweet, juicy peaches and even sweeter honeydew, I diced up several cups of the fruit.

Make sure to have a vessel large enough for a whole bottle of wine plus. I used this snazzy pitcher my husband picked up. Smile We did have a nice glass pitcher at once point, but I don’t know where it is.

I muddled the fruit with the tiniest pinch of sugar and then poured in the wine and Lillet. A few good stirs, and it was ready to be chilled for about an hour. It can be served right away, but ideally the flavors will have some time to give the sangria a little love.

sangria

Serve over lots of ice in a giant glass.

sangria

Preferably alongside a meal that someone else made, in my case spicy tuna hand rolls.

The sushi and sangria, along with Spotify, hanging out on our deck, and trying to plow through my work, made me a little less stressed, but I have a meeting this morning I am super nervous about. Tonight, I have dinner at Del Frisco’s, and when today is over, I think I will be able to breathe a little more of a sigh of relief. I hope you all have a great day!

Boston-area food lovers, listen up! You need to make a road trip or a ferry trip up to Truro this summer to experience eat @Adrian’s, the Cape Cod summer home to Boston’s Eat and chef in residence, Will Gilson, formerly of Garden at the Cellar.

Eat @ Adrian's

Adrian’s is light, open, and beachy, with nice little touches like fresh rosemary plants and candles in jars of sand on the tables. There are, of course, Eat stamps everywhere. We decided to listen to the message and went for it.

Creative, handcrafted cocktails started off the evening. I went for the Beyond the Garden, a refreshing blend of Champagne, Hendrick’s, rosemary simple syrup, and lemon. It had a very clean, crisp, herbaceous flavor to it.

After initially being a little skeptical about fish charcuterie, we decided that we had to have it. It was an excellent decision; the fish charcuterie is as delicious as it is innovative. Bluefish pate, pickled sunchoke, calamari and halibut bratwurst, yellowfin, and melt in your mouth beet cured scallops were served with pumpernickel and plain bread chips and Dijon mustard. Everything was so flavorful. The pate was especially rich and addictive.

The use of edible flowers and herbs to decorate the board, alongside the colors of the food made it truly edible art.

We also shared bacon wrapped dates stuffed with goat cheese and hazelnuts, sweet little bites full of creamy goat cheese with a surprise hazelnut crunch at the very end.

clam chowder

I didn’t try the clam chowder, but it looked like a meal in itself. I DID have a few bites of the frisee salad which was topped with a perfectly poached egg.

We were pretty full by the time our entrees arrived, but I still ate as much of my chicken as I could. It was perfectly moist and tender, surrounded by confit potatoes, spring onion, and rapini, served with a smoky tomato-y paste on the plate.

We couldn’t get over just how good every single bite was. If only we had saved room for dessert.  . .

The service at Eat @ Adrian’s was also great, maybe a little too much hovering, but the restaurant was not yet crowded. I have a feeling it will be soon. . .

We followed this amazing dinner a couple hours later with cocktails and dessert at the new Ten Tables in Provincetown, also amazing, an adorable, beautiful space, a great cocktail list, and a chocolate terrine with Thai basil ice cream that was to die for.

Truro and Provincetown are definitely dining destinations. And with all of that natural beauty who needs a reason to visit?

Hello from Truro! It has been gray, rainy, and cold, but a gray and rainy beach day is still a beach day! I am heading back to Boston this morning and looking forward to a few fun events this week: tonight John Mariani (food and wine correspondent for Esquire Magazine) signing his book, How Italian Food Conquered the World at Bina Osteria, Wednesday a patio party at Sam’s at Louis, and Friday morning going home to see my family. . . on a plane!! Thank you fab Jet Blue sale for being cheaper than a car rental and saving me 10 hours of driving!

I love the Cape. I am pretty sure that Provincetown and Truro are two of the most magical places on the planet, and no matter where I live in the world, coming here will always be a travel priority. Even if I don’t go anywhere else, I want to be here.

lobster

Saturday nights of girls weekend are always dedicated to lobster.

Meet Lobby the lobster. We also had Larry and Lisa. I wanted to have a lobster race, but then I felt mean and backed out. My lobster would have won.

lobster

1.5 pounds of sweet, buttery bliss. New England love. The lobster dinner is simple, lobster, butter, corn, and plenty of wine, like this Secco that we picked up at The Urban Grape at their anniversary sale. It is inexpensive, tasty bubbly, perfect for summer. I highly recommend. And it comes in pink as well. Smile

Secco

The second part of the night is always karaoke. We always sing Sweet Caroline, but this year we mixed it up and ALSO sang Cherish. We are great singers.

The night always ends with dancing, then pizza at Spiritus. I probably shouldn’t share this crazy photo with the world, but what is life if you can’t laugh at yourself a little? I am certainly serious enough in day to day life. We had a fantastic evening, even without sun during the day. I can’t wait until next year!
