mom's apple pie

My mom’s homemade apple pie – this is a lifetime favorite, but I got to chow down on it on a recent hug-filled trip home. My family and I got together for a big turkey dinner, with pie and vanilla bean ice cream for dessert. My mom’s pie crust and apple filling is just the best I have ever had. I don’t even really like pie anywhere else.

Dot Ale

Dot Ale 1630 from Dorchester’s Percival Beer Company – You know I have been singing Dorchester’s praises for years, and we’re excited for a brewery to be added to the list of great businesses. This refreshing amber beer has become a staple in our house because it is delicious; the fact that it is local makes it even better!

Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay – The Sonoma Coast is heaven, and Flowers Vineyard  is one of the big reasons to visit. Their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are loved and known worldwide for being very special wines. They are definitely not in the budget as an everyday wine, but these wines, especially the Sonoma Coast Chardonnay, are definitely special indulgences, especially when enjoyed on a warm dock on a sunny day.

fascinator

My Ti Tighe fascinator – It’s popular in Ireland to wear hats or fascinators to weddings and other special occasions, and when I found out a former classmate of my husbands designs them, I instantly wanted one. Luckily, I had a very special wedding to attend that gave me the opportunity to order one. This is definitely an intricate, beautiful piece of art, and I had so much fun wearing it. I can’t wait for another special occasion!

dinner at Clio

Clio Boston – Leading up to that very special wedding, we savored a very special dinner at Clio. It is the ultimate celebration restaurant with impeccable service, an outstanding cocktail program, and delectable, elegant cuisine.

Atwoods Tavern Patio

The patio and food at Atwoods Tavern – Now that I am working in East Cambridge, I have another neighborhood to explore. Atwoods, we discovered on an early October day, has the most beautiful patio, enclosed in wood, surrounded by little lights and plants, and feels a million miles away from the busy streets outside. The menu offers both healthy and indulgent choices, a great beer list, and friendly, warm service. We’ve decided we want to become regulars at Atwoods.

Riesling #WineChat

When you think of Riesling, what passes through your mind? The first word you associate with this wine might just be sweet, and in many cases you would be correct. This past Wednesday, however, I participated in a Twitter #WineChat that featured drier Rieslings and compared Riesling from Germany, the Alsace region of France, and Austria. It was a delicious and interesting chat about wine, and it was fun to compare the three side-by-side.

all about Riesling

Summer of Riesling may be over, but this white wine is versatile and the perfect pairing for many, many food choices. We tasted the following wines:

2011 Selbach Riesling Dry, from the Mosel region of Germany

This wine featured lots of dry mineral notes with a hint of ginger spice and apple, along with some fresh herbs. It offers lots of acidity and mouthwatering fruit flavor.

2011 Domaine Ehrhart Riesling Vieilles Vignes

Lime zest, honeysuckle, and bursts of citrus filled this glass. While nicely acidic, this Riesling was richer than the first, with a more luscious mouthfeel, almost toward a Viognier to me, which I absolutely love.

Salomon Undhof Steiner Kogl Riesling

One of my fellow #WineChat participants used the words “lemon doughnut” to describe this wine. I loved the rich, toasty brioche notes along with the citrus flavors; the description was really spot on.

As I mentioned above, Riesling is incredibly food-friendly; someone on the chat noted it does NOT go well with beef or chocolate. I like pairing Riesling with Thai or Indian food the best, though we paired ours with a spiced tomato compote and triple crème cheese. A dry Riesling is also a perfect wine to bring to Thanksgiving dinner.

Thanks to the Wines of Germany, Wines of Austria, and Wines of Alsace for inviting me to participate in this chat. The wine was complimentary; all opinions, as always, are my own.

I can literally count the number of times I have cooked a real meal this summer on one hand. This blog, once full of recipes and food photos hasn’t seen a homecooked meal since our Bastille Day bouilliabase feast.  With such gorgeous weather, the thought of spending any time inside just hasn’t appealed to me, so there have been plenty of dinners out, calls to Shanti, and turkey subs. . . lots of turkey subs on the boat. I am okay with all of this, hoping that now with the depressing darkness and cooler temperatures, I will be more inclined to stay inside to cook and blog.

One of the best parts about the summer is that there have been lots of date nights, often spontaneous ones, that turn out to be incredibly special and memorable.  Our date night at Mamma Maria was one of them. We met up after work, our only plan to wander the North End, and when hunger started to set in, we found ourselves near Mamma Maria. In the past we have enjoyed cozy meals in their Piccolo Room, a dining room that seats four, overlooking North Square. It was just our luck that the Piccolo Room was open for the next two hours, and we were soon seated in our own private restaurant.

We caught up on our days over cocktails. I don’t quite remember what mine was called, but it was full of fresh peach puree, summery and delicious.

Villa Bucci Verdicchio

We decided to share a half bottle of wine with our meals, which consisted of several small plates. The Villa Bucci Verdicchio was perfect with food, acidic and full of floral and mineral notes.

burrata

To start, we shared the burrata with tomatoes and the zucchini special, which included zucchini blossoms stuffed with goat cheese and fried. Heaven is fried zucchini blossoms.

scallops

Our second course was all about gorgeous seafood. We shared the scallops, which were perfectly seared and accompanied by orange slices, fennel, and peppery arugula.

lobster ravioli

The lobster ravioli, a signature Mamma Maria dish, were full of sweet lobster and dressed with the perfect amount of rich sauce, asparagus, and mushrooms. The portion sizes were perfect for sharing, and every bite was absolutely delicious. The fact that we were all alone in the room with really attentive service made it a romantic evening to remember.

We decided to skip indoor dessert in order to take a neighborhood stroll, taking in all of the locals enjoying the warm summer evening. We eventually landed at Bova’s for cannolis, a sweet way to end the perfect date night.

If you live in Boston, what’s your favorite North End restaurant? If you don’t what’s your favorite place for a date?

Happy Birthday today to my mom, the most wonderful woman in the world!
