My “Wine of the Week” post usually comes along on Wine Wednesday, but due to Whole Grain Sampling Day, it’s a little late. Better late then never, eh? I think a wine recommendation is a good thing any day of the week, especially on Friday!

On our visit to Ireland, I got to spend our last afternoon in Galway relaxing with family at one of my favorite spots. Sheridan’s Wine Bar.  It’s bright, airy, full of good wine and food, and it overlooks my old apartment and the Galway Saturday market.

They had many wines open the day we visited, and they were eager to let us try them all. When we happened upon this Castello di Verduno Basadone, I halted the rest of my tasting and went straight in for a glass of this beautiful wine.

Castello di Verduno

This wine is a stunning, light ruby red with summery, fresh,  fruity notes, lots of brightness and acidity, and a finish that evokes spice and dried fruit. We kept saying beautiful with each sip and swirling our glasses to admire the color in the sunlit room.

Wine tasting made us hungry, and a cheese board was just the thing to curb our appetites until dinner. Sheridan’s Cheesemonger is downstairs, and it is fabulous.

My favorite cheese was the most local one, a Galway cheese studded with fenugreek. Afternoons spent lingering over wine and cheese while watching the action in the market are one of the best ways to spend the last day of a vacation.

A place like Sheridan’s is perfect for discovering new favorite wines. They are so passionate about what they do, and they are excellent at taking what you normally drink and offering something similar to taste.

We finished off this wine tasting afternoon with a walk along the river to the Galway Cathedral, tea and music in the Meyrick, a big dinner, and songs at the Crane Bar. I have so many more Galway adventures left to share!

The arrival of Vino Volo at Boston’s Logan Airport really changed travel for the wine lover. Prior to that time, there was a pub and a food court, both usually packed with families and drunk tourists. Vino Volo allows for some seriously good wine tasting while waiting for a flight. It’s a way to pass the time and to get an education on wine. It’s the perfect way to kick off a vacation.

On this trip to Ireland, we paid a visit to Vino Volo as we did on our last one, and we enjoyed a couple of flights, a red and a white, allowing us to taste a bunch of new wines without drinking much. I was most surprised and enamored by this Lebanese wine from Chateau Musar, a Cinsault/Grenache blend. It was the first Lebanese wine I have tasted, and it left me wanting more. This wine was so smooth, rich, and bursting with round fruit flavors with  some gentle notes of spice and earth at the finish. As the tasting note mentions, it is super velvety, a wine you want to roll around in your mouth to savor the warm fruit notes. It’s really a spectacular wine that evolves from nose to finish. It’s a cozy hug for your palate, and if you can get your hands on a Cheateau Musar wine, I would very much recommend the experience.

Dom Pérignon Champagne

This is the first time and likely the last time that Dom Pérignon Champagne graces the pages of this little food, wine, and travel blog, but I am going to soak up every sip. Yesterday we closed on a property that caused us headaches and stress for eight years. You can get a little glimpse in my “Meet the Neighbors” post; it barely scratches the surface of the crazy we have dealt with, but it’s a fun read.

Some very special friends gave us this bottle of Dom as a housewarming gift, and we instantly knew that getting rid of our old property was the occasion to open it. With baited breath, my husband popped the cork, and it was quiet! However, when it was time to pour, bubbles flowed out like stars and were persistent throughout each delightful sip of Champagne. This Champagne can only be described as rich, complex, and completely divine. That’s not enough of a tasting note, I know, so I leave you with the tasting notes from the Dom Pérignon website. We were pretty excited to be able to celebrate such a milestone with such an iconic wine!
