Still floating along on the great memories (and bubbles) from our North Fork wine tasting trip, we find ourselves trying to relive it with sips of wines we picked up along the journey. As I wrote before, our afternoon at Kontokosta was simply amazing and so memorable, from the scenery to the wines to the people we met. We’ve been slowly opening the bottles of wine we purchased that day, choosing special at home date nights to sit and savor.

One of those nights was the perfect night for grilling and chilling. We sat on the patio, grilled some salmon with BBQ spices, and pulled the cork on a bottle of 2010 Merlot from Kontokosta.

Kontokosta Merlot

Merlot is SO great for barbecues. This wine’s soft, fruity notes open up to become more intense, think stewed cherries and blackberries, with a little bit of herbs and spice mixed in. These fruit and spice notes pair very well with the smoky flavor of grilled meats basted in sweet, spicy, sticky sauces. We drank this Merlot after it had been chilled in the wine fridge, then popped in the freezer for about 20 minutes. Merlot can be great with a little bit of a chill, making it fit right in at your Summer feast.

What wines or 4th of July cocktails do you plan on serving up?

Snugly nestled in Boston’s bustling North End sits Parla, an Italian speakeasy that opened in April. I got to check it out on a recent girls’ night out, and it is the perfect place for such an occasion.

The cocktail list at Parla is a ton of fun; classics like the margarita are mixed up with rye; I am a huge fan of rye and was excited to see this. To start off, I went with the Bee Sting Julep, a slightly spicy, slightly sweet blend of habanero honey infused whiskey with mint and lemon. It had a nice kick while also being refreshing!

bee sting julep cocktailAs it often happens when I am out with these ladies (which is not often enough!) we ordered lots of things to share. Parla’s menu is perfect for sharing, especially since you’ll have a hard time choosing what to order. What did we have?

arancini

Braised Oxtail Arancini – These were one of my favorites of the night. I loved the bit of meat in the hot and chewy arancini, and the sauce that came alongside would be perfect for mopping up with bread or just about anything.

quail egg carbonaraWe also had the Quail Egg Carbonara, which was topped with a runny quail egg just waiting to be mixed in with the hot pasta and salty bacon.

lobster ravioliThe Lobster and Uni Ravioli was as beautiful as it was delicious. Out of all of the pasta dishes (We had four, but my photos didn’t come out great.), this was my favorite. I loved the creamy pink sauce, and the addition of fava beans was nice for texture.

Secco You can’t have a dinner outing with the ladies without a bottle of bubbles, and we enjoyed a bottle of Secco Prosecco with the meal. Italian bubbly certainly goes well with Italian dishes and lots of chatter!

I would recommend Parla heartily; I sent some friends there the following night, and they loved it too. It’s a great spot in the heart of the North End, doing food that is fun, creative, and delicious!

Summer officially starts this weekend, which means it’s a great time to kick off your own Summer of Riesling! Summer of Riesling is a movement for restaurants and wine bars to serve Riesling by the glass all summer long. You can find more out about Summer of Riesling on their website. Keep an eye out for restaurants serving Riesling all summer long.

I recently received some Riesling samples from Chateau Ste. Michelle, a winery I have worked with in the past for wine reviews, giveaways, and events, and one from Anew Winery. Both wineries are in Washington state; I can’t wait to visit someday! With Summer so close, I thought it would be a perfect time to tie together these wines with Summer of Riesling.

A little about the Eroica line from the Chateau Ste. Michelle website

Eroica wines are a testament to our commitment of combining Old World philosophy and technique with New World attitude. It is a winemaking collaboration between Chateau Ste. Michelle’s Bob Bertheau and famed Mosel winemaker Ernst Loosen, from the vineyard to the bottle. The widely acclaimed and uniquely ageable Eroica Riesling sets the bar for Chateau Ste. Michelle’s Riesling Leadership.

The Eroica Riesling is a perfect wine to sip on a briny, beachy night. It’s full of ripe peach notes with a hint of sweetness that is balanced by acidity, perfect for pairing with summery foods. A bit of salinity rounds it out, making it a flavorful journey across the palate.

Eroica Riesling

The Anew Riesling is more floral and has a nice effervescence that I did not expect. The acidity in this wine left my mouth watering long after I had finished tasting.

I enjoyed the Eroica at the beach in Truro with a lobster dinner, pretty much one of the most blissful places to have a glass of wine. Sand under the feet, sun setting over Provincetown, and a lobster dinner being cooked up made for the perfect backdrop for this summery wine.

Truro

Riesling is great with more mild seafood; buttery lobster went nicely with the acidity and fruity notes. Riesling is also fabulous with spicy foods; I would love to pair it with a spicy jerk grilled salmon with a side of grilled peaches, but it would be also be great with  a simple curry or Thai or Indian takeaway.

No matter what food you decide to pair it with, remember that Riesling pairs perfectly with Summer, relaxation, and your favorite people. Open a few different bottles and discover how Riesling varies from sweet to super dry. Sip, savor, repeat!
