By now you have likely heard about the damaging 6.0 earthquake that woke the residents of Napa and Sonoma wine country this past Sunday morning. I couldn’t let Wine Wednesday go by without sending out good energy and love to the people of that area, especially Napa, which was one of the worst hit spots. Napa continues to experience aftershocks, and from social media, it’s evident people’s nerves are frayed.

The people of wine country have always been incredibly welcoming to me in all of our visits, supportive of my blog, and many of them shared support both personally and on a larger scale via social media when Boston experienced one of its darkest hours. I feel a little helpless watching so many people I interact with on a daily basis go through such a scary time. While I will be in wine country in just a few days, I thought I would share a few ways to help with anyone who is interested.  If you know of anything additional, please feel free to share in the comments.

Two organizations that I have seen spoken about are Napa’s food bank, Community Action Napa Valley, and the Red Cross, which is always a good option in a disaster.

So many wineries lost wine and had damaged facilities. If you can, do good and drink well at the same time! At the end of the day, wine involves farming, science,  and artistry, and this quake coming at harvest time can have many layers of damage to the businesses involved in a place where tourism and so many other jobs rely on winemaking. Think of drinking wine as a way to help the economy!

Plan a trip to Napa Valley! It is open for business and ready to extend its world class hospitality.

Many beautiful wineries such as Trefethen have taken hard hits while many, many businesses were closed for at least the day after the earthquake. Wine country is the perfect getaway for food and wine lovers and is pretty ideal year-round.

Happy Wine Wednesday! I’m in between not wanting to rush the summer but wanting to have the weekend back again, pretty much always. Add to that the trip to Sonoma that we booked back in May, and well, I have had a hard time concentrating whenever I am inside.

Luckily, work has been busy and fun, and I  have a lot of blog stuff happening, including a few tasty wine samples I get to share with friends and wine reviews to share with all of you.

Chateau Timberlay Bordeaux Blanc 2012

This Chateau Timberlay White Bordeaux is this week’s Wine of the Week because it is, like many of the wines I have featured, a perfect summer wine. I don’t drink Bordeaux wines enough, and I am always so glad when I receive an introduction such as this one.

Chateau Timberlay is one of the oldest chateau in Bordeaux produces estate grown Bordeaux wines with an ecological and terroir driven philosophy. This right bank property in Saint-Andre-du Cuzbac sits right at the 45th parallel, exactly equidistant between the equator and the North Pole in ideal vine growing terroir. (source)

I loved the yellow/green color of this wine; it reminded me of spring flowers. The wine is made of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Semillion grapes, giving it both floral notes as well as some citrus notes and a gentle acidity. We actually paired this with a dandelion green salad with a honey balsamic dressing, and the acidity and lemony flavors helped to balance out the bitterness of the greens. Delicious!

This wine was sent to me as a sample; all opinions are my own.

You may have also noticed a new widget on my left sidebar. I am excited to be helping The Wine Road of Northern Sonoma to help promote California Wine Month, which is the month of September. I’m excited to share events and information on California Wine Month and perhaps even to get you all to try new California wines.

Enjoy the day!

Let’s take a little trip to Austria, shall we? Our winter trip to Austria was one of my favorite travel experiences ever, but I long to spend days visiting Austria’s wine country during the spring or summer, when things are lovely and green.

The 2013 Loimer Lois Grüner Veltliner is one of the wines I would love to be sipping on an Austrian summer day, but a Boston summer on a boat was not a bad second choice.

Loimer Lois Gruener Veltliner

I have loved Lois Grüner Veltliner for years now; I attended an amazing Austrian wine tasting when I first started becoming passionate about wine, and have been a fan ever since. The 2013, like so many Grüners, is a perfect summer wine, and there are lots of summer weekends left! (Don’t let the advertising world tell you differently. It’s still time for Grüner and not pumpkin beer, sweaters, or any of that nonsense!)

This wine is refreshing and fun, with acidity that dances on the tongue and citrus notes that linger. It’s great with your favorite appetizers and would be delicious with a grilled lemon chicken, salads, or even a fun and fruity dessert.

Summer ends officially the 3rd week of September; I hope you continue to discover favorite summer wines until then!
