It was a great year for the Boston area food and beverage scene. There are countless new restaurants we are hoping to try, and resolutions like checking out the Boston Wine School to come. We need more time in our non-work lives; it would be easy to spend a week staycation in Boston alone, just discovering and rediscovering all this amazing city has to offer.

Just like in my Best of 2014 Food and Travel post, I had plenty to choose from in my Best of Greater Boston 2014 post. Of course, we didn’t go everywhere or experience everything, but here are a few favorites. Share your favorite food, wine, and cocktail moments from 2014 in the comments!

Dinner on the Farm – Boston Brooklyn Mash – We were fortunate to attend this Verrill Farm dinner as guests of Dinner on the Farm, and it was one of the best days of the year. The food and beer were amazing, and I loved being out on a farm for the afternoon. Now that I have fallen in love with Carolyn Johnson’s cooking, maybe I’ll get to 80 Thoreau soon.

The Food Project – We discovered them during a dinner at Alden & Harlow, where The Food Project was by far the best part of the night. I later got to learn more with an afternoon volunteering on the farm, and I can’t wait to help out more in the Spring. The Food Project brings so much to the table. Definitely check them out.

Hamersley’s Bistro  – Boston said goodbye to this beloved restaurant in 2014, but not before we had an incredible anniversary dinner there. Luckily we can all learn to make Hamersley’s roast chicken at home.

Merrill & Co – We ate just about everything at Merrill & Co. and loved the creative variety of cocktails on the menu. This is one of those places you want to visit again and again so you can try everything and because it feels so comfy.

Steel and Rye – The obsession from 2013 continued into 2014. Every single bite, sip, staff interaction, brunch, dinner, and drinks outing was perfect. And there were many. Brunch at Steel and Rye is the best way to spend a wintry Sunday.

Milton Fruit Center Marketplace Wine Dinners – We are still talking about this Coppola wine dinner at the Fruit Center Marketplace, one of my favorite finds in our new neighborhood. The food was something out of a top rated restaurant, the wine pairings were perfect, and we had so much fun. The value was crazy good too.

We’re unsure about the future of Fruit Center Marketplace, but we hope they will stick around and pull out more wine dinners in 2015.

Sycamore – Have you been to Sycamore in Newton? The food, the cocktails, and the food and wine expertise are all some of the best in the Boston area. You’ll find a sense of humor. zero pretentiousness, and the most perfect Old Cuban at Sycamore, one of the many reasons we spent  several great evenings in 2014 here.

Navy Yard Bistro – This little waterside gem is tied with Les Zygomates for my favorite spot for a cozy, quiet date night. Awesome location, friendly staff, friendly staff, great wine list, and delicious food make this spot one that we keep going back to.

Local wine – Wine country is closer than you think. Massachusetts has some REALLY GOOD wine from some unique and interesting wineries. In 2014 we discovered Black Birch Vineyards and their incredible Cab Franc and Traminette, along with gorgeous scenery in one of my favorite parts of Massachusetts. We also got to the Westport Rivers Sunset Music Series where we found Farmer’s Fizz, one of my favorite sparkling wines of the year. And as we have in years past, we loved visits to Travessia, along with wine club shipments. If you haven’t made the trip to Travessia, get there in 2015.

There you have it, a few of my absolute favorites in 2014. The Boston area is an exciting place to live right now; other than having to deal with winter I can’t imagine wanting to be anywhere else!

I sometimes think that if it wasn’t for this blog, I wouldn’t remember half of the things we do in a year. I love going back and being able to remember exactly what we did, ate, and saw during a certain time of year. It’s been the most consistent journal I have had in my adult life, and hopefully making it public has been entertaining and informative to others! As I sat down to start writing this post, I thought to myself that we didn’t do too much in 2014, but going back made me realize what a full year it was from the very start and just how much good happened.

2014 was an interesting year. We spent a large chunk of it legally chasing after a shady plumber who took lots and lots of money and did a hack job on our house. We hoped to leave that in 2014, but the legal system had other ideas. You can really get away with anything if you’re slimy enough, we’ve learned. If you’re looking for a plumber in the Boston area, feel free to contact me so you know who NOT to choose.

That situation has been tough, but this year has been about so much more. We saw our families a ton, with two visits to Ireland and multiple guests from Ireland, as well as a nice long visit from New Jersey family and lots of short trips there. We got to help out in our first Sonoma grape harvest, had many boat dates, and genuinely grew closer to many great people in our lives. It was a full, rich year, and we have so many memories to be thankful for.

Below are some of my Best of 2014 moments in food and travel. Please share one of yours in the comments!

Aniar –  My belated birthday dinner in Galway was definitely the best meal of the year. Service, ambiance, and local Irish ingredients make it easy to see why this restaurant has a Michelin star. How many ways can I tell you to get yourself to Galway, then go to Aniar?

Red Fish Grill, Coral Gables, Florida – We kicked off 2014 with a trip to Miami. With the winter we had, it turned out we needed every second of warm sunshine we soaked up while there. We stayed at the Sonesta in Coconut Grove (highly recommended, full disclosure, I work for Sonesta Hotels.)

Owenmore Restaurant at Ballynahinch Castle – You know how I feel about the Irish countryside, if you’ve been reading for any amount of time. There is an indescribable beauty and sense of calm; it changes me in the best ways ever. We got to spend a day in the country, followed by a delicious dinner and overnight at Ballynahinch Castle, a place my husband’s family has been visiting for years. They knew so many people it felt like home, and I will always remember relaxing by the fire into the wee hours of St. Patrick’s Day morning.

Wine Country Weekend Lunch at Davis Family Vineyards – A year is not complete without a visit to Sonoma County. Through blogging about wine and travel, I have met some great people and had amazing opportunities, and this year was no different. We kicked off this wine country trip with a glorious wine lunch at Davis Family Vineyards. Sonoma Wine Country weekend has so many great events (including our starlit night of dancing at Rodney Strong), and I would definitely recommend checking one or two out if you happen to be there during the events.

The Girl and the Fig and all the Sonoma County wine tasting – Okay, pretty much every moment of our Sonoma trip was my favorite. This post summed up some of the food and wine experiences we had in Napa and Sonoma. Our Flipkey wine country cottage is really worth checking out too.

Travel to Long Island Wine Country – From tasting by the ocean in the beautiful Kontokosta Winery tasting room to chilling out at Noah’s in Greenport, having copious quantities of oysters and bubbly at the Blue Canoe, and feeling at home at Bedell Cellarsour getaway to the North Fork was one of my favorite weekends of 2014.  The North Fork is so easy to get to from Boston, and we are definitely planning a 2015 visit.

As we look back at 2014, we are planning our 2015 travel, including the biggest trip of our lives. . . a 12 day safari in Tanzania! I have been to Africa once before (Tunisia during college), but this is going to be very different. Sleeping in a tent amongst lions and elephants and other animals? SO exciting and so very far out of my nerve-laden comfort zone! It will definitely be an adventure!

Your turn – what was your favorite food/travel moment of 2014? Do you have any 2015 travel plans or dreams?

Somewhere between our Savor Healdsburg food tour and tasting at Cartograph, we had a few extra minutes to wander around Healdsburg and decided to pop into the Banshee tasting room. We’d heard great things about their wines, and the tasting room had a good energy to it, little seating areas filled with small groups tasting and chatting.

Banshee Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

The Banshee tasting room has comfy couches, a cool vibe, with wines by the glass or bottle, along with tasting flights. It seemed like the perfect place to hang out, and overall we loved the concept of taking your time with a tasting and being comfortable while doing it. There were a couple of downsides worth noting though.  They had one spit bucket for about 30 people, so we felt forced to drink the pours we were given, something we tend to not want to do when tasting all day. And the person pouring for us actually badmouthed other wineries in an attempt to sell theirs. . .We would have felt a lot better about the experience if that hadn’t happened, but we tried to brush it off because we liked the space and the wines, which were really memorable and delicious and worth stopping for.

One of the wines we brought home is this week’s wine of the week. We love Sonoma Coast Chardonnays and have been inspired by visits to places like Flowers to drink more wine from the far reaches of Sonoma County.  The 2012 Banshee Sonoma Coast Chardonnay comes from a cool climate and thus ripens later in the season. Due to a blending of styles, which includes both oak and stainless, the wine is super balanced, with notes of vanilla bean, tart apple, and citrus. It’s far more delicate than some other California Chardonnays, and it is very easy to drink as well as to pair with food.

If you’re in Healdsburg, I would definitely recommend a stop into Banshee tasting room for a little relaxation. If it’s not too crowded and you can grab a dump bucket, you might just love it.
