I can’t write a post about wine tasting in Northern California without first sending my thoughts and prayers to everyone affected  by the devastating wildfire in Lake County. It’s hard to imagine the destruction, the fear, and the loss happening there, but it has also been amazing to see the community rally around those who have lost everything. If you’d like to help, you can visit this website for information. In the meantime, let’s hope that they get some much-needed rain.

Fog Crest Pinot Noir

My eight days in Sonoma were action-packed. For the most part, I was working for Sonoma Wine Country Weekend, but we also had a few days to ourselves for wine tasting and mostly soaking up sun. One place on my to-visit list for years was Fog Crest Vineyard. The theme of my trip was drinking beautiful wine in beautiful places, and Fog Crest was one on my list of sought after patios to taste on.

We visited on a scorching hot day, but it was that dry, California heat that feels so incredibly good to me. I swear my muscles felt looser, I felt more awake yet relaxed. I crave that sort of heat. Fog Crest, which is located atop the Laguna Santa Rosa, is worth the visit for the views alone. Never-ending mountain and valley vistas are the perfect backdrop as you taste some really delicious Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs.

While the chilled Chardonnay was perfect for the heat we enjoyed, my wine of the week is the 2012 Laguna West Pinot Noir. Fruity, bright, and with a mouthwatering acidity, this Pinot Noir is an excellent fall wine, making its way easily from a warm, blue sky day to chilly evening, paired with grilled chicken and veggies.

Another wonderful aspect of the Fog Crest experience was the tasting room staff. The woman who welcomed us, whose name I unfortunately didn’t get, was incredibly sweet and knowledgeable. She also gave me an amazing recipe for miso creamed kale. I can’t wait to make it.

Fog Crest Vineyard is a must-visit on your next trip to Sonoma County. It’s in my top five for beautiful location and I would imagine is gorgeous any time of year. Can I go back now?

Just a few photos from a beautiful summer weekend in Massachusetts, the best place to be this time of year!

Peaches at the Ashmont Farmers Market – now that I work from home I can get there before it closes, and I love it. I love that it’s another little piece of our community that brings people together for food and fellowship while supporting Massachusetts farmers and other producers.

Wine grapes at Westport Rivers – every summer I try to make at least one visit to Westport Rivers (last year for their sunset music series, well worth a visit). We were blessed with a sunny, blue sky, glorious day for drinking bubbles in the vineyard.

Lobster on a burger at the Bayside in Westport – We visited the Bayside last year, and we were happy to return this year. The food is SO good, and it has gorgeous beach views.

We made the most of the perfect day with some jumping and swimming in a warm and salty sea. If I could swim in the ocean every day, I would be very happy.

Hull Harbor Illumination

Hull Harbor Illumination – I love going to this annual event which lights up Hull Harbor in flares for the Hull Lifesaving Museum. Once again we sat at the Sea Dog and watched the sun go down and the lights go up, a perfect way to spend the night with family visiting from Ireland.

 

Kama Lounge

Sunday was spent with friends, breakfast with one set of friends and their new baby and then later on dinner with another set of friends at Kama Lounge in Quincy. They do dollar oysters on Sunday nights, along with half priced appetizers during their happy hour. Everything we ate was so delicious, especially these clam chowder poutine fries. Sinful, and now I definitely need that 14 mile run this week!

We finished the weekend out on Wollaston Beach with a perfect sunset and ice cream. Tired, happy, and with sandy feet, we went home to get ready for the work week.

With the earlier half of the week being gloriously sweltering (for me, the hotter the better, except for on my long run days), choosing a cold rosé was a must for brunch at Steel & Rye, which has been one of our favorite restaurants for more than two years now.

Liquid Farm Pink Crack

This time I had a date with two former co-workers who I have missed since I took the leap back into Communications Consulting, and the wine is what the winemakers refer to as #PinkCrack. It’s name is well-earned!

This 2014 Liquid Farm Rosé Mourvèdre is so perfectly refreshing and perfect with brunch food like this yummy ham, tomato, and asparagus omelet I had. It’s dry and tart, with notes of white peach, plum, and raspberry and a mineral-y finish. It’s also a beautiful pale pink color that always makes me think of my pointe shoes, elegant, satiny, and one of my first loves.

This wine would go well with a pool, a patio, or the beach, and for food pairings, according to Liquid Farm’s website, it goes well with everything but cereal. I am willing to try it with as many food pairings as possible to find out.
