If you’ve read this little blog for any amount of time, you know how much I love to be able to visit our family in Ireland every year. Even though it’s my husband’s home and not technically mine, I get homesick for Ireland, and I always count the days until we return. March is just around the corner!

On one of our trips to Ireland, we started out in the North and visited Belfast and Derry and stayed on the Antrim Coast to take in Giants Causeway and Bushmill’s Distillery. It was one of our favorite trips and had us craving more of the quiet, stunning scenery of the North, as well as the good times that are to be had.

When I received an email regarding a guest post on the Antrim Coast, I immediately said yes. There is a lot of do and see in Northern Ireland, including the fairly new Titanic Museum, which some of our family drove all the way from Galway to see.

If you have a trip to Ireland planned, I would highly recommend a day or more in the North. It’s easy to get around the island of Ireland, and this is certainly a beautiful part of it. The below guest post might help as a guide, if you happen to be planning a trip to the Antrim Coast. Many thanks to Rhys Davies from Belfast Tours Company for getting in touch and sharing the below post.

The Antrim Coast – A Marvel of Scenic Beauty

clip_image002

You can’t visit Northern Island and not check out the Antrim Coast. It is a beautiful scenic route which over the decades has established itself as one of the most iconic coastal drives in Europe. The Antrim Coast is a hot tourist spot and many people specifically visit this place to enjoy the beautiful landscape.

Creating it wasn’t easy nor cheap. In fact the proposed plan was largely viewed with scepticism and disbelief at first. This was the 1830s. Technology available today wasn’t even conceived at that time. Yet the plan called for a 30 plus mile road to be built by manual labour on the towering sea cliffs in order to reach the then unreachable Antrim Glens. Not many would have thought such a project would see a successful conclusion but Scottish Engineer William Bald did. He had a vision he was determined to make a reality. And in just 10 under years, starting from 1832, he made sure the road was finally completed and ready for use. It remains to this day a marvel of human innovation and it attests to the strength of the human spirit. There were no mechanical objects used during construction. It was all done by hand by manual labour; unimaginable in today’s world.

The Antrim Coast Road is also referred to as the A2. It runs from Larne to the Giant’s Causeway. People can expect to see a series of a seaside village on the way. It also touches the rocky headlands of Garron Point and Glenarm. While tourists like the entire road trip, they rate the journey from the Black Arch at Larne to the Red Arch at Cushendall, the most scenic and beautiful. One tourist referred to it as “25 miles of Heaven”.

What stands out about the Antrim Coast Road is its ability to connect different tourist hotspots all the while being surrounded by a magical and peaceful environment. Castle Glenarm is a favourite tourist hotspot. The Giant’s Causeway is another one.

Any trip to the Antrim coast should kick start with Carrickfergus Castle, moving on to seaside resort of Whitehead where visitors can see the great tower and all the popular sites in Larne. After that, take the road North by the sea and enjoy the twists and turns as well as the gusty winds and ice blue ocean along the way. You will find many picturesque villages along the way, ideal for taking pictures and enjoying the view.

The Antrim Coast is just one of the many cool places that awaits tourists on their vacation trip. Northern Ireland has a lot to offer adventurers and visitors alike. Its majestic castles and beautiful everglades leave even the most seasoned tourists in awe. Those who are visiting the first time are really in for a treat.

Sign up for a Belfast tour and not only will you get to experience the scenic beauty of the Antrim Glens but many other cool hot spots in Belfast and surrounding areas.

Happy Monday! Did you have a nice Thanksgiving? Ours was great; unfortunately I didn’t have Friday off so it didn’t really super feel like a holiday, but we enjoyed the day nevertheless.

I personally love when bloggers do roundups of stuff they are loving. When Megan posted last week, it reminded me that I had a whole bunch of random things making me happy that I just wanted to share. Favorites post almost always introduce me to new things I love, so here a few of the things that I am loving lately.

Great Vegan Bean Book

The Great Vegan Bean Book, by Kathy Hester – I was excited to receive this review copy because I met the author back at Eat, Write, Retreat years ago and she was just delightful. This book is full of easy recipes that all contain beans. There are soups, stews, breakfasts, appetizers, and even bean desserts. I have only made a couple of recipes so far, but I can easily see this book being the base of many of our meal plans.

HiLine Coffee capsules – These are the first non-Nespresso capsules that I have found that fit in my Nespresso machine. I love that they are slightly less-expensive than Nespresso and that they are produced by a small company in New York City. The coffee is fantastic; I am a huge fan of their decaf especially, since I tend to be jittery all on my own. The names and packaging are fun too! I did receive this generous box of samples to review at no charge, but I plan on replenishing our stock once we run out. I’m a huge fan.

Reserve Champagne Bar

As you all know, I am a huge lover of Champagne. The Reserve Champagne bar at the Langham is absolutely perfect for a girls night out or a romantic date around the holidays. We spent a special Sunday afternoon last holiday season at the Reserve, and I can’t recommend it enough for a little bit of fancy in Boston.

sugared cranberries

Cranberries! I love these jewel-toned little bursts of tartness, plus, they are good for you. I have enjoyed some cranberry cocktails lately, including a simple one made at home. All I did was create a cranberry “syrup” by simmering cranberries, sugar, and bourbon in a sauce pan. Once cooled, I added a scoop of the boozy cranberries to a glass, poured more bourbon over it, added a splash of fresh clementine juice, topped with ice, and thoroughly enjoyed. Cranberries and oranges are staples of the holiday season, and they definitely add a festive flair.

Two Shepherds Grenache Blanc

Two Shepherds Grenache Blanc – I love when wine club time rolls around, and one of our favorites is Two Shepherds. This Grenache Blanc was served prior to our Thanksgiving dinner, and we’re kind of obsessed with it. These wines are, to us, like nothing we have really tasted anywhere else, in the best way possible. If you are wine lover looking for some fun, delicious, and unique wines, definitely check out these wines. We’re looking forward to many evenings with friends and a fire this winter, with our latest Two Shepherds wine club shipment.

What are some of your recent favorites?

Boston’s dining scene? I just can’t keep up these days. If I did, my bank account would be empty, my pants wouldn’t fit, and I would probably be missing a good chunk of the work week. Every day it seems something new opens, and it makes me super proud and excited to live and work in Boston. It also stresses me out a little! I want to eat it all. Luckily, we are able to have fun and delicious nights out like last Friday at the newly opened Commonwealth in bustling Kendall Square, just a short walk from my office.
Commonwealth Cambridge

I had passed by Commonwealth many times while it was under construction and even popped my head inside a couple of times after it opened, but Friday was my first experience dining there. It is made for fun, social dining, from the decor to the menus and everything in between.

Commonwealth Cambridge menuThe menu is made up of starters, proteins, veggies, and sides, allowing you to mix and match and have a different meal every single time.

Commonwealth cocktail menuCommonwealth also offers a bunch of fun cocktails, beers, and wines by the glass. We were with our favorite cocktail experts, so we did a lot of sipping and sharing tastes. I loved my Lord Nelson, a Commonwealth classic. (Rum Clementine, Creole Shrubb, Burnt Orange)

Lord Nelson cocktailButtery, fluffy Parker House Rolls started off our meal. I was ravenous, and these rolls tasted so good. I am kind of inspired to try to bake them one of these cold evenings. We’ll see.

squid

Since we were with another couple, we were able to order and try a bunch of different menu items. I was not a fan of the grilled squid; unfortunately it tasted very fishy to me. Luckily, everything improved immensely from there.

beet salad

In a continued effort to eat my vegetables, I devoured the beet and arugula salad, a combo that is a favorite of mine, and was super fresh and well executed at Commonwealth. We also ordered up a bunch of delectable sides, including scalloped potatoes, Brussels sprouts, kale, and duck fat fries. Oh my.

I didn’t feel like any of the choices on the protein menu, so I went to the starters and had the oyster po’boy, which was the perfect size in a warm buttered hot dog roll. It was pretty much amazing. Aren’t fried oysters just so decadent?

Commonwealth dessert menu

We ordered too much food and definitely packed some to bring home, but I had to check out the desserts. From someone who often skips the dessert menu altogether, that sounds kind of strange, but I love the mixing and matching in the Commonwealth dessert menu. Vanilla bean ice cream, a cinnamon waffle, and hot fudge was the obvious dessert choice for me. Waffles and ice cream were a favorite in our home growing up, and they remind me of the New Jersey boardwalk. It was hard to eat another bite, but this dessert made me very, very happy. It was a sweet way to end a fun night.

waffles and ice creamAs I mentioned earlier, I really love the setup of the menu at Commonwealth, and the way that it offers so many choices for sharing. This is definitely a place you want to visit with fellow food lovers so you can cover more of the menu. I can’t wait to return to eat the rest of the sides, cocktails, and desserts!

Do you like ordering a bunch of items to share, or are you all about an entree for yourself?
