Welcome to Spectacle Island! Just off the coast of Boston, this little island is a mini-vacation for us. Accessible by both ferry and private boat, it’s a great place for hiking, running, picnicking, and, in our case, spending a quiet, cozy night in the cabin of Ceol na Mara.

Spectacle Island, Boston The Boston Harbor Islands offer a variety of activities, from yoga to kayaking, to historical tours and clam bakes.

Spectacle Island Gazebo Our first walk took us to the drumlin between the two sides of the island.

Spectacle Island Gazebo This gazebo has always been a place of great tranquility, overlooking green hills and blue sea. We spent over an hour there, enjoying the quiet and peace, our only company a lone turkey.

Spectacle Island turkey This space is about to become even more special. You see, marathon bombing victim Krystle Campbell used to work on the island as an employee of Jasper White’s Summer Shack. This gazebo will be dedicated in her memory. We found this out not long before our visit to Spectacle Island, and we spent quite a bit of time talking about the tragedy, sending healing energy into the universe for the victims’ families, and being thankful for our lives in that moment.

Boston Harbor Because it was our anniversary weekend, we toasted to love and being grateful for how blessed we are. Duval Leroy Champagne seemed like a good choice for such a celebration. I am always grateful for Champagne. Smile

Boston Harbor We spent the rest of the night watching the sun set and seeing most of the other boats leave for the day. Other than two boats and the Mass Maritime staff, we were alone on the island, listening to the sounds of waves lapping against our hull, the clank of the sailboat, and the occasional plane overhead.

We haven’t had the time to go far this summer, but I honestly can’t imagine wanting to be anywhere but Massachusetts in the summertime.

Now to start planning on ways to get out of here come winter! We are leaning towards Sint Maarten in January or February. After a summer close-to-home, I have a major travel bug and am ready to be on-the-move again!

Do you have any fall or winter travel plans?

When vacation time is scarce, but the desire to see everything and anything is burning bright, creative solutions are necessary. We, lovers of summer over all, find ourselves without many days off during this cherished season, so when we finally did have one, we seized it and flew to Martha’s Vineyard. Just a 37 minute flight on Cape Air, the journey to the Vineyard is a lovely one, and one I highly recommend.

Our trip was a last minute one; we had taken the day after our anniversary off knowing we wanted to go somewhere, and when we spontaneously decided to book a flight, Martha’s Vineyard seemed the perfect day trip. I hadn’t been to the island since I was a child, and my husband had never been. An adventure was born!

Cape Air On Monday morning, we headed to the airport, went through security, and my small-plane nerves set in. The Cape Air plane was not the smallest I have been on; we had the pleasure of flying over the West of Ireland in a four seater years ago, but the thought of being in a van-sized plane still scared me. Two mimosas later, and I was climbing into the last seat of this little plane, strangely calm and incredibly excited for the day ahead.

view of Boston Really, I could not be nervous, with these gorgeous views of Massachusetts below us. I spent most of the flight snapping photos.

Landing was smooth and sweet, actually way better than most big planes I have been on. Once we arrived at the Martha’s Vineyard airport, we hopped on a bus to Oak Bluffs. The bus system on Martha’s Vineyard is pretty fabulous. We used it all day, and it saved us the money of renting a car or taking taxis. Bonus: the bus drivers know the island well, and they were very eager to give us directions and suggestions.

Martha's Vineyard My nerves before the flight meant that I skipped breakfast, so the first order of business was getting something to eat. We grabbed egg, linguica, avocado, and tomato sandwiches at the Big Dipper in Oak Bluffs. The sandwiches were fantastic, and the joyful energy of the staff was infectious; it really set the mood for the day.

Oak Bluffs Our bus driver gave us great directions to the gingerbread houses on MV, so once we wolfed down our sandwiches, we headed to the tabernacle, a spiritual center in Oak Bluffs, part of the historic Methodist campground. The peaceful, simple place of worship is surrounded by colorful homes of the Camp Meeting Association. It’s a very special place, not just for the architecture, but for the sense of community and tranquility that prevails throughout.

Oak Bluffs Tabernacle Oak Bluffs gingerbread house We loved all of the details on the bright gingerbread houses. They are occupied by owners and renters, so we tried to keep our distance to give them privacy while also enjoying the beauty that these cottages have to offer. We are thinking of renting one next summer. Spending a week on Martha’s Vineyard sounds like heaven to me!

I was tempted to buy a leash for my non-existent dog, but I practiced restraint. The store, while it has some cute things, is pretty overpriced, so we left empty-handed.

Vineyard Vines We ducked out of the heat for cold beers at Offshore Ale Co., a relaxed brewpub with a nautical theme.

Oak Bluffs Martha's Vineyard We stopped at the Sand Bar & Grille for some classic fare, clam chowder and crab cakes.

After lunch and some more walking, we hopped on the bus to Edgartown. Buses on Martha’s Vineyard are great, cheap, reliable, and really make getting around easy.

Martha's Vineyard As it started to get cloudy, we spent time gazing out at the sea from a rooftop in Edgartown, watching the Chappaquiddick ferry go back and forth, transporting cars to the island. We both can stare at the sea for hours and never get tired of it.

Eventually, it was time to think about dinner before our flight home. We toasted our seventh anniversary with Veuve Clicquot at The Atlantic while taking in more sea views.

Veuve Clicquot Katama Oysters Oysters and lobster rolls rounded out the feast, followed by peanut butter fudge on the way back to the plane.

Flying the co-pilot seat on the way home was the icing on the cake on this perfect day. I hate to see Summer 2013 go, but we sure do have some amazing memories!

When we travel to Sonoma and Napa, there are posts that come out of it, big and small, and then there are the random photos that I take that might not fit into a certain post, but that I still want to share. Every Sonoma and Napa moment is pretty special, if you ask me, and that’s what this blog post is all about on this fine Travel Tuesday. When we stay in Healdsburg, we often drive from there through the Alexander Valley, and it is a drive I always look forward to, especially in the springtime when flowers abound, long before we see even shoots in Boston.

Alexander Valley This time on our drive from Healdsburg to Yountville, I decided I needed to stop the car to run around in the flowers, and my handsome driver happily obliged.

Our Napa Valley day including a very special tasting at Jessup Cellars, but it also included a stop at favorite Mumm Napa, a delicious and casual pizza lunch at Pizzeria Tra Vigne after a tasting at Handwritten Wines (post coming soon!).

Pizzeria Tra Vigne We shared a salad and a couple of pizzas, including the Vespa, which featured chicken apple sausage, mozzarella, oven roasted onions, and spinach. Pizzeria Tra Vigne is the perfect, relaxed place to fill up on delicious food in between wine tastings in the St. Helena area. pizzeria tra vigne Another Napa Valley must-visit for us is Chateau Montelena. Not only is it steeped in history and the subject of one of my favorite movies (I know Bottle Shock is not all that accurate, but I LOVE the scenery and storyline nonetheless.), but it is a stunning property, and they make beautiful wines.

Chateau Montelena Wine club members can rent out these private little islands for events, and we are seriously thinking about it. I want my birthday party on an island at Chateau Montelena. P.S. Chateau Montelena’s Chardonnay is incredible, but their Riesling and Zinfandel literally made me weak in the knees. Swoon-worthy wines.

Chateau Montelena Back in Healdsburg, we loved staying in town and being able to just wander around aimlessly, stopping at various tasting rooms, attending events, trying new restaurants, and settling in at new favorites. A quick stop at Hawley Winery’s tasting room in Healdsburg revealed a luscious, tropical, heady Viognier and a crisp Sauvignon Blanc. A cozy, dimly lit tasting room was a nice respite from the bright and beautiful Northern California sunshine outside.

Hawley tasting room And finally, there was our night out at Cartograph Wines where we discovered the wine of the summer for 2013, their 2012 Rosé of Pinot Noir. It is beautiful, delicious, and made with love. Order some while you still can!

Random, but important moments are what make travel so memorable for me. I don’t need something fancy or long-winded to make a mark on me forever. These are the moments that are simple and easy, and that make me smile when I look back on them.

What are your favorite little travel moments?
