We’ve made it a full two weeks at home with a newborn! It’s been quite the adjustment, but for the most part, it’s also just been really fun. Myles is a very sweet baby who likes to eat as much as we do, and it turns out that this is the best time to get out and about with a child.

Brunch and breweries and even a dinner date have occurred, and he has slept through it all.

Our first brunch out was with friends to Ashmont Grill, where I made my triumphant return to brunching with a bucket of bubbles and delightfully runny eggs in a spicy, perfect shakshouka with homemade, warm and puffy bread.

Myles snoozed in the booth alongside us, wrapped in his BAA-themed blue and yellow blanket since it was Boston Marathon weekend.

I can’t even deal with how cute he is. . .

I promised not to be that mom who posts a million pictures a day, but he is pretty spectacular.

Continuing with the “we barely ever leave Dorchester” theme, we had a dinner date for three at Tavolo, one of our favorites. I love the space at Tavolo, and Brian at the bar is the best.

Gnocchi with cream sauce, asparagus, and crispy prosciutto was heavenly.

On our second Sunday at home, we brunched again, this time thanks to a gift card to Steel & Rye, another absolute favorite. It was chock full of #babieswhobrunch; I think we are catching onto something here. Brunch is at a good time of day for babies and tired parents who have been up forever. It’s usually got the perfect level of noise in case of any fussing, and there are drinks!

We kicked brunch off with some delicious apple bread with honey butter, the bread having almost a custard-like consistency, something I could have easily eaten all day long.

Since I had been missing smoked salmon, I went with the perfectly crispy potato pancake topped with salmon, avocado, creme fraiche, and greens. Holy amazing.

We know that the baby won’t be this portable forever, so we are enjoying dates out and about now and have so many places and people to show him. It’s fun that his birth coincided with the arrival of real spring weather. . . it is a beautiful season of year and of life indeed!

Have you found any new favorite restaurants lately? In true winter fashion, we’ve been mostly sticking close to home and enjoying lots of homemade meals with some Dorchester dining mixed in for delicious measure.

What have we been eating lately?

Molinari's Dorchester

Dessert first, I say! We have come to absolutely love Molinari’s in Adams Village in Dorchester. It’s cute and cozy, the staff is super friendly, and the food is absolutely fantastic. This past weekend we met friends there and ended with the most scrumptious cannolis after a perfectly cooked salmon over salad and a to-die-for pizza topped with fried garlic, roasted garlic, garlic cream sauce, and meatballs. Hello heaven.

One of our Dorchester favorites is Shanti, and while we usually love it as takeaway eaten at home, we recently went for their lunch buffet, which is fantastic and a great deal at $9.95/person. I polished off a big plate with a little bit of everything. Their food never disappoints.

Warm weather recently had us craving a beach day, and after some sun and surf in Hull, we stopped at Tosca in Hingham, which is one of my all-time favorite date night spots.

Feeling up for something light, we split their incredible beet salad and fluffy, dreamy truffle tots with homemade steak sauce. It is a combo I highly recommend! We love sitting at the bar, which is cozy and romantic, and has no TVs! I hate that so many restaurants have TVs everywhere; if I wanted to watch TV, I would stay home! Tosca has a pretty great wine list too; on our last visit they were featuring a wine from Mauritson in the Dry Creek Valley, which we love.

Breakfast has suddenly become one of my favorite meals, and walking to Sweet Life Bakery and Cafe in Lower Mills has become a nice weather tradition.

It’s often the Irish breakfast for him (and I always steal a few bites) and banana pancakes for me. The song always has me craving them!

If we’re having breakfast/brunch at home, pancakes are often on the menu, but one of the most sinful-tasting brunch entrees we’ve had recently was a brioche French toast, made with Trader Joe’s brioche (SO good), eggs, milk, cinnamon, and raspberries. It’s super easy to make; I just eyeballed everything, soaked the bread for a couple of hours and stuffed it all into a baking pan, cooking it until it was firm and custard-y.

I know we have so many new Boston restaurants to explore, and I hope that as spring arrives we will get a chance to do just that. In the meantime, we are pretty lucky to have so many yummy options so close to home.

Our recent visit to the Austin, Texas area to stay at Sonesta Bee Cave Austin was a whirlwind of beautiful scenery, music, and of course food!

Tacos and BBQ were the theme of the trip, and we got some great recommendations. We could have stayed for weeks to eat! Feast your eyes on just some of the deliciousness we enjoyed in this beautiful part of Texas.

The Brushfire at Torchy’s Tacos: Jerk Chicken, Grilled Jalapeno, Mango, Sour Cream, Cilantro, and Diablo Sauce – I loved Torchy’s because they let me buy a huge crock of the tear-inducing Diablo sauce. I love spicy food!

IMG_8023

Beef Nachos at Maudie’s Tex Mex – I loved the pickled veggies on these giant chips, which were really well-topped!

Lunch at Schmidt Family Barbecue in Bee Cave – Pulled pork, brisket, jalapeno mac and cheese, beans, cole slaw, and all the pickles I could eat made for the perfect lunch. This was some incredible food in a fun atmosphere with picnic tables and lunch trays.

Tinga Chicken Rellenos at Blue Corn Harvest: Anaheim peppers stuffed with tinga chicken and jack cheese on top of green chile sauce and ranchero cream sauce, black beans, veggie rice and a drizzle of sour cream and cotija cheese.

Deliciousness in the form of avocado toast at Forthright Cafe, which felt like THE place to get brunch. I can’t drink these days, but I was practically drooling over their on-tap beer selection.

Pulled pork, beans, slaw at Lambert’s in Austin – This was a bit of an upscale BBQ experience, and it was delicious. I loved the expansive space, which features great live music, local beers, and cocktails too!

One of my favorite Austin finds was Alta’s Cafe. It was right on the water, and it was the perfect place for a cold tea and lots of warm sunshine. It was pure bliss.

A mocktail margarita and all the chips and dips were a delicious break after lots of walking around Austin. 70 degrees in January is perfect for me!

Mi Madre’s was one of our absolute favorite finds. Their patio was ideal for a sunny Sunday morning brunch with loads of guac and breakfast tacos that filled me up for the day.

And the service was fantastic! The owner came out to chat with us and share that he has worked with the same local, quality suppliers for decades. You could taste it!

Austin is such an incredible food city, and while we just got a taste of it, we are definitely looking forward to exploring more!
