You may have noticed that I tend to like boats and wine quite a bit. A few weeks ago, I got to spend the afternoon on a Stellar Yacht Charters yacht as a guest of Santa Maria La Palma wine.

Santa Maria La Palma is out of Sardinia, a dream travel destination of mine, and it was fun to combine their delicious wine, my wanderlust, and our beautiful Boston Harbor for a day of wine tasting and education with a fun group of people.

Front and center we have Igor, who was in Boston representing Santa Maria La Palma. He was charming and knowledgeable and so passionate about the wines.

wine and food pairing

The boat itself was appointed with classic luxurious detail, and the crew was phenomenal. A huge spread of food for pairing with the wines was available to us, including lots of seafood like sushi, mussels, and shrimp, perfect with wines from Sardinia.

We were treated to quite the lineup of wines, mostly white and rosato, one red, all special and memorable and celebratory. The primary grapes making up the wines were Vermentino and Cannonau, which grow very well in Sardinia and reflect the island’s terroir in every sip. We all remarked that we wished we had these wines in front of us all summer long, but that they’re also perfect for sunshine and island dreaming throughout the winter.

What did we taste? You’ll see below the full lineup on the tasting sheet. I of course left my notes behind, but I most definitely had a few favorites.

Aragosta Vino Spumante  Brut NV– Sparkling wine from Sardinia is a treat and might be replacing some of the other sparkling wines that often grace our table. One of the things I love about being able to attend wine events like this is the spirit of discovery!

Aragosta Vermentino di Sardegna DOC 2015 – Vermentino is fun and flavorful. I got a nice bit of tartness off of this, lemons and Granny Smith apples and would love this wine with oysters. . . or even as part of a granita mignonette on top of oysters!

Akenta Underwater Spumante Extra Dry – Just check out that bottle! This wine is aged under the sea in water that is part of a national park in Sardinia. Under the pressure of the sea and in the darkness, the bottle grows sea life on it! This was just another fascinating detail and part of the sense of place that these wines brought to the table.

aragostaAragosta  Rosé –  First of all. this wine has a lobster on the bottle and its contents are pink, which made me love it immediately. I know we shouldn’t judge a book bottle by its cover, but for th coastal living obsessed, it just makes a cute addition to a beach or boat party or a beach house themed home.

The wine is delicious, offering up beautiful, strawberry and watermelon note, fruity but not sweet. Summer in a glass and absolutely a new favorite rosé wine.

I also loved the not-pictured La Bombarde Cannonau di Sardegna DOC, a very light red wine with notes of cranberry and light cocoa, light enough for a humid boat day but warm and cozy enough for cooler weather. It would be a great Thanksgiving wine.

stellar yacht charters In addition to the wines being spectacular, the event itself was also really something special and well thought out. It was a small enough group that we all got to chat with each other, and the Captain had a pug named Junior! We had an overcast but warm fall day, lots of delicious food and wine and an opportunity to learn about the gem that Sardinia is for wine production and travel.

I love any excuse to get out and about in our neighborhood, so when I read about the Dorchester Bike & Brew Fest, despite the fact that I don’t do much biking, I knew I would have to at least stop by.

Dorchester bike

The festival took place on a gorgeous late summer night in Ashmont’s Peabody Square. With the street closed off to traffic, it was the perfect setting for people of all ages to mingle and for kids to run around without parents having to worry about traffic. Dorchester has a huge sense of community, and every time we go to local events, we run into people we know and meet some new friends as well.

Dorchester

The festival centered around bikes and local brews. There was plenty of information on biking in the area, and this cool mobile home took care of the brews. It was a pub-on-wheels for the night, and probably the most popular spot at the festival!

Dorchester Bike and Brew Many great aspects of the community were featured, including local leaders and the Boston Police ice cream  van, which is just a brilliant idea for creating positive experiences with police for kids from an early age. The area around the ice cream van was full of smiles!

Boston Police Ice Cream Truck

There were a number of food trucks at the festival, but our noses kept bringing us back to Sheherazad where we tucked into fragrant Iraqi red chicken and a fried cauliflower wrap. . . some of the best food I have eaten lately!

Sitting on the sidewalk eating dinner with the setting sun, laughing neighbors, and live music as the backdrop, I was as happy as can be. It doesn’t take more than great people and simple, delicious food to make my day.

The Bike & Brew Fest was a great time, and while I know logistics can be complicated, I wish it was something that could happen a few times a year.

It’s finally open! Dorchester Brewing Co.’s opening was much-anticipated and long-awaited for many of us Dorchester residents, and I was so excited to get a sneak peek last week at the ribbon cutting with Mayor Walsh.

Dorchester Brewing Co

I was even more excited to learn how much local love the brewery team has; so much of what has gone into constructing the brewery and making it beautiful has to do with local Dorchester people and businesses. Dorchester Brewing Co  Mayor Walsh was on hand for remarks and has provided some great support along the way; he really let the brewery team shine though, and shine they did.

Dorchester Brewing Co The Dorchester Brewing Co. space is gorgeous and made from materials reclaimed from the original warehouse. I love that they have games and a patio along with two tasting bars and will be host not only to house beers but beer collaborations with brewers who don’t have their own breweries.

The staff was fantastic, and the beers we tasted, Clapp’s Cream Ale and Mass Ave IPA,, were delicious. I don’t even like IPAs, and I loved this one. It was so balanced and easy to drink with lovely pine and citrus notes.

The integration of the old and the new dotted the space, and hope for the surrounding community as well as the space within was everywhere. I was so impressed with everything; the brewery really went above and beyond all of my hopes and expectations.

Aiming to be a gathering place and a place even for families, Dorchester Brewing Co. will have a b. good food truck outside most of the time, giving beer lovers a healthy-ish local option for pairing food with beer. I love b. good fries and bowls!

While I am bummed we sold our condo a few blocks away, as a Dorchester resident for 10 years,  I am so excited to have this inspiring and fun new business as ours. Welcome to Dorchester!
