What a day! We are finally back in Boston, and after crisscrossing the country twice in two weeks, plus the almost eight hour drive on Wednesday and a five hour drive today, I am ready to unpack and to settle into a routine until Christmas comes and I have another three weeks of travel. There’s this whole marathon training thing that I seem to be ignoring. . . better get on that! I had a really great time at home in NJ. On Friday, rather than braving stores, malls, or even New York City restaurants, I slept in, read lots of Foodbuzz stuff, then had a low key late lunch before taking my niece to her swimming class (where she happens to be the best, and youngest swimmer, very very proud). Lunch as at the Harvest Moon Brewery in New Brunswick, New Jersey, an area best known for being the main campus of Rutgers University. It was also where I used to hang out when I came home for holidays from college. It has some really cute areas to walk around and is probably the restaurant hub closest to my NJ home. Harvest Moon brews its own beer and always has a new selection of brews on tap. At the moment they are offering the following: British Nut Brown Elmes’ Mild Manor Jimmy D’s Firehouse Red HF Belgian Ale Full Moon Pale Ale Moonlight Kolschbier Harvest Hefeweizen Oatmeal Stout I ordered the Oatmeal Stout which was creamy and had a toasty, roasted coffee bean flavor with a hint of chocolate. PB272465

For lunch, I ordered the fajita salad which was a tortilla shell filled with romaine lettuce, black beans, tomatoes, and corn, topped with a mango salsa dressing, guacamole, and a dollop of sour cream. PB272466

It was nice to eat some fresh vegetables, especially topped with guacamole, one of my favorite all time foods. I ate a couple bites of the shell, but those tortillas are really wasted on me. They taste quite good but are a nutritional nightmare! Harvest Moon has a great menu. I actually had a difficult time deciding between several salads, veggie chili, and a veggie sandwich. I stole some of their fries from my sister, and they were REALLY good. If you are ever in the area and looking for good food and beer, definitely check it out. When I returned home today, I had a package from one of my Foodbuzz foodies, Amie at The Healthy Apple! It is chock full of coupons for healthy products, most of which I have never tried and would love to! Thanks, Amie 🙂 I love my Foodbuzz friends!

The rest of the weekend will be spent settling in and getting ready for the week. I also plan on visiting the MSPCA to walk dogs, going running with a co-worker to try out a new running club in the area, and doing a lot of writing. I have two guest post opportunities this month, and I am really excited about them. I love guest posting and having guests! If you are interested in writing about food, travel, wine, or fitness, please let me know. I am collecting posts! Before I go, a couple of things: 1) The winner of the Trader Joe’s Super Red Drink Powder giveaway is Erin from Big Girl Eats! Thanks to everyone for entering! Erin please send me an email at traveleatlove2009@hotmail.com to let me know where to send the drink powder. I hope you love it as much as I do! 2) It doesn’t seem like holiday tea will work the weekend of December 13th for many people. Does the weekend after work? If we can’t get a group together, I would love to do something in early January, or if any of you ladies are ever free for after work drinks in Boston, we could also do that! Enjoy your Saturday night!

I travel fairly frequently throughout the year by car, train, and airplane, and every time I travel I learn a new lesson or tip that I try to remember for next time to make my trip more pleasant and more comfortable. The most difficult type of travel for me is for business. When we travel for fun, we are often visiting family or staying in a rented apartment, giving the trip a more homey feel. When I travel for business, it is all about the hotel, every meal out, and very long hours. Below I have included a few tips that have really helped me. When I first started traveling for work, I absolutely dreaded it. I have gotten it down to much less anxiety, and at times, I even enjoy it now.

1) Be forgiving of yourself. When you try to exercise often and eat healthy, homemade meals as I do, suddenly living in a hotel room, getting 5 hours of sleep, sometimes not getting a chance to eat for 6 or 7 hours, and then being forced to eat whatever you can find, can take its toll on your body and how you feel about it. I used to get completely stressed, but I have gotten more forgiving, reminding myself that the situation is temporary, that I can do my best to eat as well as I can, exercise when possible, etc. but that a lot of conditions are beyond my control.

2)Hydrate! Always important, this little step can get easily forgotten at a busy trade show or in a day of meetings. I often feel like I am the only person who drinks water! But I do. On this past trip, the exhibit hall did not offer water, so I bought a bottle and refilled it constantly at the water fountains. The water was warm, but I made sure that I stood that the fountain, chugged 16 ounces, and refilled to bring back to the hall. I went from feeling like I was going to pass out the first day to feeling pretty good the final days, all because I got 60 ounces of water or more into me during that time.

3) Time and space. My schedule this week had me at the exhibit hall by 7:00 am and done with events at 9 or 10 pm. This didn’t leave much time at all for anything else, but I managed to wake up a teeny bit early the first day to do a Dave Farmar yoga podcast. It was like getting a massage! Taking 25 minutes to myself to move, stretch, and embrace the quiet time that I did have sent me off to the day of work with a spring in my step and a huge amount of positivity in my attitude. As you can imagine, this makes a huge difference for showing and selling products!

4) Bring a bit of home with you. This time around, my friend had just given me a little bag of luxurious toiletries, so I brought those with me. I also brought fleece pajamas to wear when my days were over, and I had my laptop which is chock full of Christmas music. Being able to have some really beautiful lavender lotion, bubble bath, spirit lifting music, and cozy PJ’s helped me to maximize the rest time I had and made getting ready each morning kind of fun. Getting ready for a crazy day of work suddenly doesn’t seem so serious when you are listening to Frosty the Snowman while blowdrying your hair!

5) Pack snacks! My Larabars definitely saved me from crashing several times this weekend where it just wasn’t possible for me to go and grab food. You obviously will not likely have a lot of room for food, but if you can get a couple of healthy bars and maybe some fruit to tide you over, you may be able to make better food choices and skip over that stale croissant. . . which I ended up eating on the last day because I was fresh out of snacks! I also like to pack Emergen-C or Super Red Drink Powder, which easily amps up the healthy factor of water and gives you something with flavor to drink.

6) Use plane time to sleep. This applies to any long travel, but especially if you are leaving home at 3:30 am and are expected to be put together and “on” when you land. I have had to fly overnight to Europe, land, and be in meetings an hour later. I have a terrible time sleeping anywhere but in my bed, but there are a few things I do to make rest more likely on a plane. I bring the following: warm socks, pashmina, iPod with soothing music, an extra long sleeved layer, and something to act as a pillow. Those u-shaped pillows are great, and I need to get one! Planes are usually very cold (for me, at least), so it helps to wear two pairs of socks and extra layers. You can’t count on all airlines having blankets, and seeing them just re-fold blankets last night between my flights, I would much rather have my own source of warmth!

But most of all, when traveling for business I go back to my first point, being kind to yourself and going with the flow when you have to. Otherwise, you just create more anxiety for yourself and make things worse.

Do you have any must-do travel tips? Are you traveling for Thanksgiving weekend?

Today is the last day to enter my Trader Joe’s Super Red Drink Powder giveaway! Check it out if you haven’t already. Chicgao Marathon Val is also doing a giveaway on her blog!

How many of you were at the stores at 5 am for Black Friday shopping? I definitely wasn’t! One of my favorite parts of this long holiday weekend is sleeping, and there aren’t many deals out there that would have me waiting outside all night long! Free airline tickets maybe. . . I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving. Our weekend started off with LOTS of traffic as I left home two hours later than planned because of a few work crises. The usual four and a half or five hour trip took over seven hours. It was brutal, but apparently those who left later in the day had it much worse. I can’t imagine. My mom greeted us with one of my favorite dishes.

Simply delicious, it is just chopped bell peppers sautéed in garlic and olive oil. Once they are softened, shrimp is added and cooked until pink. At the last second, she adds green olives and a little bit of olive juice. Served over pasta or with bread for dipping, it is a perfect weeknight meal. On Thanksgiving morning, I made a super healthy smoothie of regular skim milk, 2 cups steamed red chard, 1 cooked sweet potato, cayenne pepper, a banana, and cinnamon. Yum. The addition of cayenne to my smoothies has really added a whole new flavor to them and has helped me get over my smoothie boredom once and for all. After spending some time visiting my nana, we all reconvened at my uncle’s house for dinner. I started in on the appetizers right away. My sister brought olive tapenade from Wegman’s with a crunchy crostini. I like making my own olive tapenade, but this store bought version is excellent. There was also spinach dip in pumpernickel bread, one of my favorites.

My cousin brought their new family member, Cody, and I spent a lot of time chasing him around the house. He’s still a baby and tuckered out easily!

Dinner was amazing as usual. For wine, we served Nashoba Valley Winery Vidal Blanc and Gundlach Bundschu Pinot Noir. Both paired very well with the meal and kept white and red drinkers happy. We had turkey, various types of stuffing including one with sausage, sweet potatoes, corn, rolls, and garlic mashed potatoes. What I ended up eating most of were the two raw side dishes. I don’t know if it was the unseasonably warm weather, but the two dishes I want to focus on are a celery slaw and a cranberry orange relish. The slaw was simple and crunchy, made of celery, cabbage, red bell pepper, vinegar, some sugar, salt, and pepper. It was festive and looked like confetti. image

A recipe that I found online that sounded very similar is from Rachael Ray’s website: http://www.rachaelray.com/recipe.php?recipe_id=1771. Ours was made of celery, green cabbage, and red peppers, but I am pretty sure that any crunchy veggies can be substituted. Its seriously addictive and filled me up without being heavy or making me feel sluggish. The second dish that I filled my plate with was cranberry orange relish. image

Another easy dish that packs a lot of vitamin deliciousness. It is made of a bag of cleaned cranberries pureed with juice, pulp, and zest of two oranges. Add sugar or honey to taste, and just whirl it around in the food processer until everything is chopped and combined. After my healthy-ish dinner there was dessert of course.

It was not the traditional pie fare (Hey, where was the pie?!), but there were lots of yummy options including cheesecake bites, Italian cookies, and a strange but good strawberry jello pretzel salad. I did not eat the jello part, but the layer of cream cheese and pretzels was really delish! After dinner we spent time visiting with everyone and then headed home for more relaxing and to sleep! I know my schedule is going to get busy again as soon as we get back to Boston on Saturday, so I am just enjoying the down time that I have now with my family. I hope you all are doing the same! P.S. If you have the time this weekend, check out my cousin’s website: http://happyglyphs.com. He is a great cartoonist, illustrator, and fine artist.
