Heirloom Tomatoes

I tweeted yesterday that I wanted to eat heirloom tomatoes with goat cheese or burrata for the rest of the summer, and there really is a good chance that I will try my best to make that a reality. Is there anything better than heirloom tomatoes?

They cheer me up with their gorgeous hues, and their unique flavors are special, there are no tomatoes like them, and this makes heirloom tomato season so special.

On Wednesday after work, I headed from my Monday/Wednesday office in East Cambridge along the Charles and on to Charles Street to pick up a few things at Savenor’s for dinner. Being out of town all weekend meant no groceries, and I was in need of heirlooms.

Thankfully, they had them.

I picked up a few things, including this capra cremosa al tartufo, truffled goat cheese, and called ahead to ask my husband to chill a bottle of Secco.

Once I got home, I washed and chopped the tomatoes, covered them with a generous sprinkle of crumbled goat cheese, salt, pepper, and olive oil. With the pour of a glass of bubbly, dinner was served.

I ate tomatoes until I was stuffed, and surprisingly I wasn’t hungry for the rest of the night.

This light meal was a first step in trying to get back into eating naturally what feels right to me. I have been all over the place, going overboard eating and drinking at events, then getting restrictive at home to make up for it and just feeling generally not great about my eating habits. Trusting that I know what I want and should eat is a little easier this time of year, and I plan on embracing the rest of the season to eat fresh, delicious, good-for-me food.

I also tweeted yesterday that, try as I might, I could not get into oatmeal. I really want to like it, but I find the texture to me awful, no matter what I mix in.

It made me realize that I don’t have to eat oatmeal. If I want yogurt and it makes me full, I’ll eat yogurt. I know that makes total sense, but lately I have been all aflutter in my head about what I am eating.

What foods are you gravitating toward right now? And for fun, what foods do you want to love, but just can’t get into?

Have you been to Russo’s in Watertown? That is my new favorite place on earth. I make weekly visits and now will try this out with some tomatoes!

I love Russo’s! It’s a little far so we don’t get there nearly enough!

This is my kind of dinner. I love heirlooms and have some on the counter right now!

So I’ve never tried it, but I know someone who stirs oats into yogurt… uncooked oats and they soften in the yogurt… not that you need to eat oats but it could be a new way to try them.

I need to get back on track with eating… we’ve definitely been getting way too much takeout.

I wish I could like scallops… everyone seems to enjoy them so much, but I just don’t.

This looks like an amazing dinner, I LOVE fresh tomatoes, even just sprinkled with salt!

My husband isn’t into oatmeal, either. I’ve tried to make it for him so many ways and he just doesn’t like the texture… so we gave up 😉

Its not food, but I’ve never been into margaritas and I feel like I’m the only one!

I have a special soft spot for heirloom tomatoes as it was one of the first times we all really bonded! BTW, Smolak Farm is having a tomato festival on Saturday but I sadly can’t make it. 🙁

This dinner looks amazing! And I agree with The Mighty Rib, Russo’s is awesome! I always say I need to go more often.

Have you ever tried muesli? I soak uncooked oats (~1/2 cup) overnight in light vanilla soy (~3/4 cup). I eat it cold, and it has a different texture than oatmeal. I put in some ground flaxseed, chopped apple and banana and have it for breakfast. I stole the idea from Au Bon Pain (but theirs is too sweet for me).

      Two things:
I’ve never ever liked oatmeal so I fully support you on that one.

I love heirloom tomatoes!!! Last night I made prcoscuitto, heirloom tomatoes, arugula and mozzarella sandwiches and they were amazing!

That looks delicious. I like goat cheese on anything.

If you don’t like oatmeal, don’t eat it. Now I’m going to give you a recipe for oatmeal that I think you should try…just try it, you might like it! Joking.

I’ve been craving ramen noodles. WHY? They’re so disgusting. I feel like a blob 🙁

I have been eating tomatoes and also blueberries by the handful. Love that summer meals like yours take so little effort.

Tomatoes and truffled goat cheese sound incredible! This is the first year we planted some heirloom tomatoes in our garden, and I can’t wait to pick them (they are almost ready)!

Heirloom tomatoes and goat cheese is the perfect combination.

I go through serious food phases. Lately I’ve been super stressed and haven’t felt like cooking so big bowls of cereal with fruit are my lifeline. Other than that, like when I feel like getting all crazy, I am loving wedge salads as of late. Blue cheese, bacon, crisp cold lettuce… I want one right now.

Guess what I had for dinner last night? That’s right…your heirloom inspiration. I’ll have a full write-up on it this Saturday on my blog. Thanks again for such a great idea!
