I am on a roll when it comes to trying new restaurants in my home neighborhood of Dorchester, and on Valentine’s Day, we decided for a low key evening of local takeout.
As I mentioned in past posts about Dorchester (banh mi and a day in Dorchester), my neighborhood has a very diverse population which results in a great variety of restaurants and food stores. Always a lover of the flavors in Vietnamese food, we decided to order from Pho’s Asian, a restaurant with a huge menu that features Chinese dishes in addition to Vietnamese specialties.
The bad part about living in Dorchester is that there are not a ton of restaurants that deliver. We always use GrubHub, an easy one-stop-shop for us to figure out which restaurants will deliver, and when.
On this particular evening, we decided on classic Pad Thai which was topped with fresh vegetables, crunchy peanuts, and crispy bean sprouts. The flavors in the dish were fantastic, the only problem was that some of the noodles were a little gummy and stuck together in clumps.
Always a sauce-lover, I ordered several sides of peanut sauce, and this did not disappoint. I added a little to my Pad Thai and saved the rest for dipping my fresh rolls.
Again, the fresh rolls had some great flavors, but they were lacking in vegetables. I would have loved to see some carrots in here.
The final dish we ordered was the sweet and sour soup with shrimp. It had a really tangy broth with tender shrimp, crunchy vegetables, and big chunks of sweet pineapple. With the addition of a side of vermicelli, this soup was enough for a meal for two, and it was really comforting. In fact, I could go for some of this soup for my sore throat today!
Overall, I have mixed feelings about Pho’s Asian. I definitely liked most of what we ordered, but I wonder if their menu is just too big. Large menus always make me wonder if a restaurant can do ALL of the dishes well.

Coconut Cafe in Newton Center has some great Thai food – particularly their crunchy pad thai. Also, I’m lucky to get great homemade vietnamese from my cousin’s wife, but when I can’t get that, Da Lat on Park Ave in Worcester has delicious dishes too. My favorite part of pho is adding the fresh mint and basil and sprouts…yum.
