Girl in a Bubble

This was the week of the way-too-close. It started with our dinner at Lolita where two other couples were crammed in next to us in an otherwise empty restaurant, and it just got worse. There was Monday, when I went to the gym during off hours to ride alone in the dark spinning studio, currently one of the most blissful things imaginable to me. Except for when the darkness is interrupted by a woman coming in, turning on the lights, and in a room of 40 empty bikes, chooses to sit on the one next to mine.

Then there was the empty train car when, again, in a sea of empty spaces, someone decided to sit in the seat next to mine. Sometimes I truly wish I could invent a bubble to walk around in so that my space is well defined to my liking. Not too high maintenance is it? Smile

For someone who values a lot of personal space, those things were bad, or so I thought, until today. I took my spinning class, showered, and as usual headed to the steam room to sit (wrapped in a towel and sitting on a towel) for a few minutes.

I couldn’t believe what happened next.

For those of you who go to Healthworks, you know that there is an unnecessary level of nakedness amongst its gym-goers. I mentioned it in my gym pet peeves post last year, and nothing has changed in that department. Today the nakedness got way too close. As I sat all alone in the steam room, which has two levels of L-shaped benches, another person came into the room, and let’s just say she was NOT rocking a towel like I was. In my head, I thought that she would go to the other side of the steam room where there was plenty of room. That’s what I would do. No, this woman LAID DOWN RIGHT NEXT TO ME so that her toes were an inch from my leg. I seriously couldn’t believe it; if I moved even slightly to the right her feet would have touched me. I loudly said “ew” and walked out of the room.

Am I weird for being bothered by this?

Just because I am writing and because I am always inspired by and grateful for Melissa’s Three Things Thursday, here are a few other things that really annoy me.

1. People who don’t bag their own groceries and instead wait for the cashier to scan everything, then stand there and watch said cashier bagging while everyone else waits.

2. The rudeness of Boston men – and I know there are plenty of you out there who are awesome and polite – but never in my life or in any other city have I seen so man things pregnant women standing on the T, or as in the case today, a woman struggling with a stroller and a sleeping toddler (don’t worry, I helped) while men look down at their shoes, read the paper, or as in today’s case, stand and watch with their hands in their pockets. Plus, what’s up with sitting down next to me on the crowded T and opening your legs as wide as possible? It’s not your couch, gentlemen, lets be conscious of the space and remember some of those manners you must have learned long ago.

3. Parents who don’t recycle, use cloth bags etc. If you have kids, don’t you care about them having a world to live in after you die?

4. People who don’t look behind them when going through a door to see if someone else is close behind

5. While I am on the topic of the T, backpack wearers, take it off! How many times have you been hit in the face by a backpack in a situation like this?

6. Texting and walking – I am as phone-obsessed as anyone, but I am so tired of people almost walking into me because they are texting. This happens REALLY often at my gym when women are on their way out. It happened today, and I told the woman to look where she is going. I’m not going to take it anymore!

So that’s what’s bugging me today. . . I guess that’s a lot! But I was hungry, and I am triply irritable when I’ve missed lunch!

There’s a lot more in the gym pet peeves post; check it out for a good laugh.

Do you, like me, have major space issues? If not, what is the thing that really bothers you?

Love this post Meghan – I second the backpackers. take it down and put it on the ground, especially if its a packed train, especially when they are bumping into you all the time.

OMG #2… I have actually tried to sit like that on the T to get back at those guys. I friggin hate when guys sit there and spread their legs… I don’t want your leg to touch mine! Gross and rude!

I hate self-checkouts… and I hate when I don’t have a bagger, but I do bag my own groceries when there is no bagger. I was a cashier… and I think it sucks that stores are doing away with these jobs. I also hate that these kids who are cashiers now think it’s totally acceptable to talk to each other about parties, getting laid, cheating on their significant others’, and other inappropriate conversations while ringing up and bagging my groceries. Shut up, and do your job!

I’m not having kids for many reasons, but one is that I don’t want to bring them into this world because people just don’t care.

Totally agree with everything you said. I think I would’ve died if someone did that in the steam room. Also I’m kind of sketched out that she was in there without a towel-does that mean she was like lying naked on the public bench…ahhhhhhhhh okay I’m done thinking about.

Anyway, I need a bubble around me too. Yesterday at work someone I really dislike came up to be and started like feeling my shoulder while talking to me, I was like oh my god make go away!!!

Omg, I am dying laughing about guys spreading their legs on the train/bus. WHY do they do that? Such a funny observation.

Thanks for your comment on my blog! I forgot how therapeutic blogging is. Good to hear from you 🙂

ew to the woman sitting next to you naked. I know people feel free/comfortable naked, but that doesn’t mean everyone around them wants to see their shit!

I’ve been hit by backpacks a lot lately. It amazes me how people act on the T. When I was in Japan, millions of people in the city, not ONE person bumped into me. They are serious about their personal space. Loved it!

Along with the grocery bagging thing, I said this on Melissa’s blog, too, but when people aren’t ready to pay I go nuts. Like what step do they think comes next???

See? It IS possible to live in a city and have space. I feel the same way about Vienna. It’s like there is an unwritten code that everyone has their own little space.

OMG… I joined Healthworks a year and a half ago and am constantly amazed by the level of nakedness and the freedom to do ALL kinds of personal grooming in the locker room while naked. I always wonder if I’m being too uptight! THANK YOU!

you are a magnet for these strange souls. whats up with that. And the Lolita thing bugs me!! I sat at the bar last night which was fun. but there were definitely open tables and the place is massive so that’s just a strange thing they did to you guys.

I’ve gotten pretty good and putting up blinders when in the Healthworks locker room, but sometimes it’s just too difficult. And as per grievance 1, they should charge you extra if you don’t bag your own. That’ll maybe get them moving.

They should also charge for bags! Europe has been doing it for nearly a decade and has reduced the amount of plastic by millions of pounds!

Oh god. I totally agree with all the T gripes. I’m so short that I would ALWAYS get hit in the face with a backpack. I also hate the kids that have their music on SO loud that I can hear it at the other end of the car.

I also hate gym cliques….specifically at my new yoga studio.
Back bay yoga was NOT this snobby. it’s YOGA not high school.

also, someone rear-ended me in the parking lot.
            that is all.

I think that if people want to see the worst in human beings… all they have to do is go on public transportation. I’m a commuter and have learned to just get through it with a stern look on my face… I have my exit plan mapped out and do my best to get in and out as quickly as possible.

And don’t get me started on the texting and walking… which bothers me less than the fact that people have no idea how to do those two things at the same time. I really don’t know how these folks get through life…

I might find it slightly easier to let go of annoyances than you, Meghan; but, no, you are not a total cranky pants! You are absolutely right about these things as well as the things you listed in your gym pet peeves and travel pet peeves. Don’t people realize that they themselves, not just you, would be happier and less stressed if they paid attention to a few common-sense rules in public places?! Trouble is, common sense and common courtesy aren’t very common these days.

In addition to texting while walking, I work at a coffee shop and the amount of people who won’t stop texting on their phone long enough to look at the person taking their order and who then always take the wrong drink, making extra work for the barista, is tremendous and tremendously rude.

I also really dislike when people have ipods in or are on the phone when they check out at a store. The checkout person is a human being! Acknowledge them! I probably sound like such a cranky person, but there is always room to be polite!

Agreed. Completely & wholeheartedly. Except maybe I am guilty of the backpack on the T thing, but henceforth, I’ll be far more conscious of this. Can I add that I hate when a group of people is walking down a sidewalk or hallway abreast? It makes it virtually impossible to walk past anyone–how aggravating!

I live the sauna but I go in with towels (and shoes because I got frost bite as a kid and the heat of the sauna hurts but for some reason with shoes I am okayer) and I have had someone tell me I was over dressed (rolling my eyes)

It happens to me on airplanes, on the T… it’s like – what really is in your pants that requires all that space? I don’t spread my arms just because I have boobs so get your nasty legs away from mine. I hate people who don’t recycle. I don’t have recycling in my apt building so I have to walk to whole foods to bring back recyclables OR bring my recycling to my parents in Maine because WF doesn’t take everything. So it really bothers me that people are too lazy to put their recycling out on the curb… or people at work who just throw paper in the trash when we all have individual recycling bins.. i call them out all of the time!

HAHAHA i just about died laughing at this basically because everything that annoys you, annoys me the most, too.

can not STAND how rude the guys in boston can be. it’s unreal. and the ones who are nice usually aren’t from here! i mean, in general, i just feel like a guy should at least offer his sit to *any* woman if she’s standing on the train. call me old fashioned, but it’s just polite to do! especially when we’re clearly struggling with groceries, purses, shopping bags etc. be a man and stand up! hahaha. hmph.

the steam room story is outrageous. and is probably illegal. i just dont get WHY someone in their right mind would want to plop down, in the nude, next to a complete stranger. i’m all for being confident in your own skin, but that’s taking it to a completely different (and disgusting) level.

and if someone doesn’t hold the door for me i make sure to say “thank you!” in an obnoxious way just to prove a point. i’m generally a nice person but i have no shame. i’m all about manners (except when people break them, i’m not afraid to give them an attitude!).

wow. after all that venting i somehow feel better now. it’s like free therapy! you should write these posts all the time so your readers can all let their frustrations out 🙂 or we could just get together, watch creepy dateline episodes, and vent about the annoyances of life 😉
