March 2010

I am definitely writing my posts for this weekend in reverse chronological order, kind of like that Seinfeld episode where they go to India for the wedding 😉 I hadn’t planned on writing a post on running yesterday, but I thought it needed to be written. Anyway, as I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I spent Friday afternoon in Cambridge attending an event held by Oldways, followed by a lovely late afternoon wander around Harvard Square.

Cardullo’s, also known as gourmet international heaven on earth (at least to me) was having a Friday German beer tasting. I am really not one to say no to a tasting, so I went in, and after browsing the selections of cheese, chocolate, and tea, headed to the back to sample some beer.

The beers of the day were from Weihenstephan, the oldest brewery in the world. I missed the light beer, thanks to a couple of people lacking tasting etiquette (Hello, take your taste and step away from the table! You won’t miss anything if your stomach isn’t touching the table, I promise. And really, “excuse me” is a polite way of saying “Move!”)

I moved straight on to the dark beer which was delicious and reminded me of all of the dark beer we drank in Germany and Austria. The chef at Cardullo’s had made tasty little potato skin-like treats using red bliss potatoes, the Weihenstephan beer, and two cheeses currently being featured at Cardullo’s. Blissful mouthfuls of cheesy potato goodness!

After leaving Cadrullo’s I did some shopping in the square. In anticipation for my run, I bought a few bath bombs at Lush.

I took this photo before I got in trouble! Apparently Lush does not want anyone taking photos in their stores. Probably part of the war on terror or something 😉 Honestly I can’t imagine why they have such a policy. I bought a bunch of stuff so it wasn’t like I just walked in to take photos. Anyway I got the blue bath bomb on the top row which contains seaweed minerals and actual bits of dried seaweed. It was a nice post-run treat.

It was getting chilly out, and I was happy when my husband arrived and we went to The Red House restaurant for dinner. I have been wanting to eat at The Red House for YEARS, so it was perfect timing that I was in Harvard Square and they had a reservation open.

The inside of The Red House is very cozy with dim lighting, candles, pillows on the banquettes, and different fabrics covering the menus and wine lists.

In the mood for beer, I had a Sixpoint Brownstone ale, a delicious dark beer that I sipped throughout the meal.

To start, we shared the fried oysters with greens, pickled onions, and a nice bacon-y vinaigrette. The oysters were plump and briny, they went really well with the bite of the onions and smokiness of the bacon.

For my entree, I ordered the lobster risotto.

image

It was rich and creamy and full of chunks of lobster, some perfectly cooked and some very chewy. Overall, this dish had potential to be amazing, but it unfortunately had a HUGE amount of black pepper in it. I love freshly ground black pepper, but this was a tongue paralyzing, throat tickling, eyes watering amount of black pepper. I feel like that drowned out the subtle, sweet lobster and risotto flavors which was unfortunate. Based on the quality of the appetizer, the beer, the atmosphere, and the great service I would go back to The Red House, but I wouldn’t order the risotto.

Hanging out in Harvard Square was a great way to kick off the weekend and a good reminder that I need to visit the area more often.

Have you done anything fun or eaten anything delicious this weekend?

Today I am resting up for the week. There will be blogging, laundry, and hopefully power yoga. The week ahead is looking like lots of fun: Restaurant Week reservations at Rialto, St. Patrick’s Day, babysitting a friend’s nephew, and then jetting off to wine country for my birthday weekend! Woohoo!

If you live in New England, chances are that today you are being deluged with downpours and whipped by chilly winds. At least thats how it is in Boston. It also, as my luck has it, was the day I planned to run 21 miles. Now I could have planned the longest run of my marathon training for last Saturday, a still, sunny, mid 50’s spring day. But that wouldn’t be exciting, would it?

So this morning, I woke up dark and early. Then I went back to bed for an hour of deep sleep that felt great. I mapped out my running route while eating a bowl of Greek yogurt and peanut butter topped with some chocolate covered Goji berries. Yum!

I REALLY didn’t want to run. I left the house in shorts and after 2 blocks turned back home to put pants on. The forecast said it would be 52, but it felt closer to 32.

Back at home, I considered just staying. That would have been nice. But I headed back out and along the South Boston waterfront where the winds felt like a hurricane. I was soaked about 1/4 mile into the run. The first 6 miles or so were brutal, and I considered quitting about 25 times. The dialogue in my head was literally, “I can quit and start over tomorrow.” “But if you just keep going you’ll be done and can enjoy the weekend.” Back and forth back and forth. I changed my route a million times and after about 8 miles decided to focus on time, just running for 3 hours and 40 minutes. I spent a looooooong time running around Beacon Hill just to make sure I got in a quality run. The mental struggle went on, but it got a little quieter the further I got. Once I was 15 miles in, there  was no way I wasn’t going to finish.

With about 45 minutes left, my iPod died 🙁 So I ran the last bit listening to the wind and the traditional Irish music blaring from South Boston pubs. That kept me going.

I arrived home FROZEN. I couldn’t put my key in the door or turn the doorknob my hands were so numb. Needless to say I ignored the advice to ice and hopped in a hot bath with a bath bomb that I got at Lush in Harvard Square yesterday (more on that later). And here I am, in my bed, blogging and catching up on Real Housewives of NYC.

I had a great afternoon and evening at a Yukon Salmon event with Oldways, followed by a beer tasting at Cardullo’s in Harvard Square and dinner at The Red House. I will be back later with photos and a full restaurant review.

Before I head out, I did want to announce that the lucky winner of Secrets of a Skinny Chef is Nicole from Making Good Choices! Congrats Nicole! Please send me an email to traveleatlove@gmail.com with your address so I can have the book shipped to you.

Have a great Saturday everyone! I am off to do some Napa and Sonoma planning!

Friday definitely always comes faster when I am nervous about a long run! I am going 21 miles tomorrow, the longest I will be running during this marathon training season, and I am pretty scared! I have done it before, and I think that’s why I am so nervous; I know how difficult it is going to be!

Still, I am excited that it is the weekend and even more excited to introduce Michelle from Fun and Fearless in Beantown as the Friday Foodie Feature! I love Michelle’s blog and tweets, especially because she is a fellow Bostonian and always seems to have great suggestions and dining experiences. And she is super sweet. Her blog was recently featured on Boston.com; once you check it out, you will see why! I haven’t met Michelle yet, but I hope to soon. Boston blogger meet up anyone? 😉

How long have you been blogging?

I started my blog in July of 2008 as a personal online diary.  I was inspired by my friend Kim who has a blog about her Ironman training (she’s a two-time Ironman athlete) and it motivated me to start my own blog about my “fun and fearless” adventures in Boston (hence the really long title to my blog).  I only had a few readers, which were close friends of mine.  As my blog started to get a more defined focus on food, cooking and restaurant dining experiences, my readership started to grow.

What is your favorite thing about blogging? Least favorite?

I write about the food that I truly enjoy (whether cooking or eating) and have been thrilled to meet people who share this same interest.  So I’d have that my favorite aspect of blogging is meeting so many wonderful food bloggers at some fabulous food and wine events – all because of this blog!

I think every non-professional food blogger can agree that the most difficult part of food blogging is finding the time to do it all.  I work full-time as an attorney and I cook regularly but the process of taking photos and writing is always time consuming.  There are so many great restaurant experiences and recipes that never make it to my blog because sometimes you just want to eat or cook without taking notes and photos along the way.

What has been your most fun blog post to write?

Last month my boyfriend and I went to a flourless chocolate cake cooking demonstration and port tasting at Troquet in Boston (http://funandfearlessinbeantown.blogspot.com/2010/02/flourless-chocolate-cake-and-port.html). I love cooking demonstrations because you can learn something and then of course taste what you’ve learned!  In this instance, how could you not love tasting chocolate cake?  This was such a fun event for both of us to experience and it was great to meet some local food bloggers.

Where do you see your blog this time next year?

I want to continue to find strength and confidence in my writing.  Until recently, my writing was mostly focused on my cooking experiences and restaurant reviews.  I’ve started to expand my blog to include food product reviews and also participate in food and wine events.  As the subject matter of my blog expands, I want to continue writing quality pieces in my own voice.

Is there anything else about your blogging experience you would like to share?

Although he refuses to take credit for it, my boyfriend Bret takes a lot of the photos for my blog.  You can definitely tell which photos are his and which ones are taken by me from my Canon One Shot.  My favorite blog posts are the ones that we experience (i.e. cook or dine out) together – where I write and he takes the photographs.  For us, cooking, eating and blogigng about food is done together with love and something that brings us closer together in our relationship.

Thanks, Michelle for sharing your blogging experience with us!
