December 2009

Well, the snow certainly arrived! It took until past midnight last night, but when it started coming down, it didn’t stop until we had about a foot. The morning was so lovely and quiet.

I started out by baking Trader Joe’s apple spice bread which was a warm, apple-y pre-shoveling treat with a couple of cups of Irish breakfast tea. If you are having overnight company over the holidays or need a quick dish to bring to a brunch, I would definitely recommend this bread mix. It is easy enough for non bakers like me!

We spent some time this morning just lazing around, which was SO nice. With only two work days this week, I know I am in for a nightmare. When we were ready, we bundled up and shoveled our driveway, sidewalk, and stairs, then helped our neighbor shovel his driveway so that he could get inside to watch the Pats game 🙂 I love our neighborhood.

Now I am ready for some fun. Last week I was contacted by a public relations firm representing Mezzetta offering to send some holiday recipes and samples. You may remember my love of Mezzetta products from the Foodbuzz Festival. Their many products include roasted red peppers, pepperoncini, and olives stuffed with all sorts of mouthwatering things like jalapenos. They were kind enough to send me roasted red peppers and olives stuffed with jalapenos. You saw the red peppers in last night’s Brussels sprouts, a holiday side that will be sure to please even the pickiest veggie eater. The olives, well I failed to photograph them because I singlehandedly finished the jar in about a day and a half 🙁 So firm, salty, and delicious, and the jalapenos really added the spicy punch that I LOVE in my food. It was like Mezzetta knew exactly what I liked!

Speaking of roasted red peppers and other deliciousness, I thought I would just share a few easy homemade ideas that you could easily use this week, some that I have used and some recommended by Mezzetta.

Creamy roasted red pepper dip- Roast a head of garlic (see how in this post). Place 3-4 cloves of garlic in a food processor with 1/2 large jar of roasted red peppers. Puree until thoroughly blended, then add 12 ounces of whipped cream cheese, ricotta, or goat cheese and continue to blend until you have a lovely, creamy reddish pink dip. Serve with toasted pita triangles, crostini, or vegetables.

Spiced, toasted almonds- take two cups of raw, whole almonds, and toss them with olive oil, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, and sea salt. Spread evenly on a baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees, keeping an eye on the almonds to make sure that they do not burn.

Ideas from Mezzetta for a 20 minute miracle party:

A martini bar with a variety of drinks, sweet, savory, spicy, and traditional, with garnishes like olives, onions, and maraschino cherries. If you saw my Foodbuzz Festival posts, you will see the gorgeous Sweet Pepper Martini that Mezzetta prepared at the magical tasting pavilion. I pretty much guarantee that if you make this for your holiday party, it will wow your guests and make them feel like they are at a fancy martini bar.

Make me a crostini bar:

A variety of spreads like the roasted red pepper dip above, baked goat cheese in marinara, or lemon artichoke parmesan spread allow guests to mix and match their favorite toppings with crunchy crostini, crackers, or baguette slices.

Ultimate antipasti:

As easy as opening a few jars of olives, artichoke hearts, pickled veggies and laying them out festively with different cheeses and/or types of meat, an antipasti provides something for everyone.

There are many recipes for holiday and everyday foods and drinks over at the Mezzetta site, so check it out!

Party Planning 101

In addition to my Christmas excitement, I am also getting pumped for the New Year. I start it out with a trip to Arizona, then 10 days in Ireland immediately after. I am also signed up for two classes so far at the Boston Center for Adult Education, their celebrity chef series and a champagne/sparkling wine tasting class. AND I am going to be taking a wine class online at The Wine Spectator School. My goal? To take 12 food or wine related classes in 2010. There is so much to learn!

We are trying to decide whether or not to go out tonight to get out of the house for a bit. I hope you are all staying warm and safe in this wintry weather. Get ready for a short week!

Happy Saturday! How many of you are being dumped on by a huge snowstorm? As of right now, Boston is 100% snow free. Let’s keep it that way.

I hope you enjoyed my first Friday Foodie Feature. Don’t forget I am looking for both future featured foodies and guest bloggers for January. If you would like to submit something just send me an email to traveleatlove2009@hotmail.com.

I worked from home on Friday and had an enjoyable day for the most part. At around 3:30 I decided to take my “lunch” and went for a long run, about 9.7 miles. I had planned on 10, but running along the waterfront in Boston was brutally cold and windy, so I cut it slightly short. I promise though, in quality it was worth about 12 miles!

After my run, I worked two more hours and my hubby arrived home from Texas where he was being interviewed for a new job. We shared some Chateau St. Michelle Frizzante bubbly and some spicy Korean shrimp from Teriyaki House by the lights of our Christmas tree. It was absolutely lovely.

This morning, we had brunch at my favorite brunch spot ever, Masa. I can tell you that I had my favorite, caramelized plaintain empanadas, Southwest eggs Benedict with home fries, and a spicy Bloody Masa. It was delicious, and I will be writing a guest post about it for another site in a couple of weeks. I will be sure to let you all know when its posted!

We spent the rest of the day sort of lazing around. A huge snowstorm was predicted, so we didn’t plan much. I am half happy for a lazy day and half annoyed that I listened to the weather and didn’t do more. I could have done with a massage today!

Tonight is going to be another night in, waiting for the snow and resting up. I think that I suppressed my cold long enough to run yesterday, but now it is coming back with a vengeance. I want to be healthy enough to walk dogs and get in a few good workouts before Christmas, when I know I will be eating lots and resting with family.

Dinner was leftovers from Teriyaki House, but I wanted a hearty, healthy vegetable dish to serve on the side. I am driving my cold away with vegetables!

I promise this will be my last Brussels sprouts post! The recipe I used tonight was originally inspired by a Rachael Ray recipe:

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/rachael-ray/sweet-and-spicy-brussels-sprouts-recipe/index.html

As always, I took the recipe idea and made a few fun tweaks based on what we have in the house and the flavors that we like.

image

I started out with the last of our Brussels Sprouts. My hubby/ sous chef removed them from the stalk while I prepared the rest of the ingredients:

Mezzetta roasted red peppers (about 4 large pieces, chopped)

1/2 red onion, chopped

1 cup Spanish red wine, I used a Monastrell

3 tsp agave nectar

1/2 tsp paprika

1/2 tsp sea salt

1 tsp fresh ground black pepper

2 tsp habanero oil

image

I combined all of the ingredients except for the Brussels sprouts and brought them up to a boil, then lowered to a simmer until the onions had softened substantially. Then I placed each sprout face down into the bubbling wine mixture, which smelled amazing, by the way!

image

Isn’t this festive looking?! I let everything simmer together, uncovered, until the sprouts were soft enough for me. Leaving it uncovered also helped the wine mixture to reduce to an almost syrupy, sweet and spicy glaze.

This recipe was spot on! We ate the entire pan, along with some chicken and noodles for dinner with some Long Trail Hibernator ale. And hibernators we will be tonight! We have never watched Mad Men, so we are going to tune in to a few episodes online to see if we like it.

Have a great night, everyone! I will be back tomorrow with some last minute holiday entertaining ideas and recipes, some courtesy of Mezzetta, who very kindly sent me some delicious samples and recipes a couple of days ago.

What are you up to on this wintry Saturday? Are you snowed in?

Welcome to the very first Friday Foodie Feature! After All in Good Food wrote up  a review of my blog, I decided that what my blog really needed was to feature some of the great writers that I read every day! I came up with a few questions, and asked Mardi from Eat, Live, Travel, Write to be my first feature. You can read her great responses below. They are interesting and inspiring!

Mardi

What is your favorite thing about blogging?

Meeting like minded souls from all over the world.  I also appreciate the fact that my blog is a bit of a creative outlet for me (my refuge from academia!).  I have just embarked on my PhD in Second Language Teaching (part-time) and my blog offers a way for me to keep my creative juices flowing.  Sometimes in academic programmes, we forget how to write when there is no word count.  This is actually one of the reasons I began the blog – to help myself remember how to write in my own natural voice again after 2 years of working on my MA.

Least favorite?

Well it’s not SO much about blogging per se but I just wish there were more hours in the day.  I find the blog takes up quite a bit more time than I originally anticipated (because there is all the “behind the scenes stuff” like reading and commenting on other blogs which is important and necessary to learn more as well as to grow readership).

What has been your most fun blog post to write? Sorry – there are four!

The BLT from scratch “reveal”
http://www.eatlivetravelwrite.com/2009/09/they-say-it-takes-village-to-raise.html

or the Foodbuzz 24,24,24 based on our Lao cooking school experience

http://www.eatlivetravelwrite.com/2009/08/foodbuzz-24-24-24-culinary-laap-of-laos.html

and recently, a cooking workshop I organised at the school where I teach:
http://www.eatlivetravelwrite.com/2009/12/kids-in-kitchen.html

I also can’t NOT mention my amazing Bertolli “On the Menu” experience at the Foodbuzz Blogger Festival in November:

Where do you see your blog this time next year?

I am not sure – everyday brings something new in the blogging world.  I would like to think that I might be writing a column for a respected website or publication or working in collaboration with some more established bloggers so that I can continue to learn and grow my blog.  Anyone want an intern???? 😉

Is there anything else about your blogging experience you would like to share?

Sometimes people are surprised when they come over to dinner and I don’t take a photo.  You know what?  Sometimes you just have to live in the moment and enjoy the eating experience.  There are a lot of food and/or diet blogs out there detailing each and every bite  the blogger eats – I don’t know how they do it.  Since I am fairly new, I do try to post something daily but I think as my readership grows and I have a little band of loyal readers, I will reduce this over the next few months.  There’s a fine balance between posting something worthwhile and posting something just for the sake of it and I don’t think I am quite there yet.  When you look at some of my favourite blogs – Chocolate & Zucchini, David Lebovitz, Steamy Kitchen, Smitten Kitchen, Chez Pim etc.. they are not posting every day.  I hope one day I will have the confidence in my blog to post much less often and be ok with it.
Thanks for reading – please come on over and check out my blog at www.eatlivetravelwrite.com.  I will be travelling in Paris and France over the next two weeks and there are a LOT of very fun food and wine related events planned, including a Foodbuzz 24,24,24 dinner!  You can also follow me on twitter: eatlivtravwrite.
Thanks for having me Meghan!

If you would like to be featured, please email me at traveleatlove2009@hotmail.com!
